Notes for S
ERENIA ELIZABETH BOYDSTON:
Serena Boydstun moved to Bell Co, Texas after her 2nd marriage, with brother Joseph Howell Boydstun. Tombstone reads:

Serena, wife of Martin Whiteley born Feb. 13, 1822, died July 18, 1895
"Lord she was thine and not my own, Thou hast not done me wrong"
Taken from "Joseph Whiteley, Sr. and His Descendants in America"

Message from Shirley Erickson (shirley@htcomp.net) April 2000:

Yesterday, Tiffany, the girls and I went to the Maxdell Community in Bell County, Texas. We found the Maxdell Cemetery where many Boydston's and one Whiteley are buried among others. Kay Tucker had told us about the cemetery in the yard of the Boydston family home. On our search, we stopped several times, asked directions and found the home and cemetery only to find the gate locked. Across the road, there was another home with someone outside. We stopped and found a Lawanda Boydston Parker who was very friendly. Her niece owns the Boydston property where Serena and possibly Amos Martin, Sr. are buried. I have her phone number and will call to try to arrange to visit both asap. The property has been in the family for over 100 years where 10 children were born. The next house (abandoned) South is the Ellis home where 13 children were born (supposedly all related). We also visited the school which is behind Lawanda's land and very much off the road. Pictures should be coming soon. I cannot at this point get all of these Boydston's and Whiteley's (this one is C. A. son of A.M. and M. A. Whiteley -- i.e. Amos Martin, Jr. and Mary Ann Huffman) tied into ours but know that they are. Does anyone have the information on Joseph Howell Boydston who married Malinda Ivie (We believe this is the Malinda Boydston buried in the Maxdale Cemetery but need to confirm)?? -- More later, Shirley

MOS MARTIN WHITELEY, SR.:
Tombstone reads:
Rev. M. Whiteley born 11 Nov, 1808, died Oct. 19, 1882
"Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal."
Taken from "Joseph Whiteley, Sr. and His Descendants in America 1751-1990," by Doris Easley Estes.

On Amos Martin Whiteley, Jr.'s death certificate, the informant said his father was born in Illinois. Some sources say Tennessee, others Kentucky.

Specific dates for Amos Martin Jr. & Sr. are given by Rose Mary (Badovina?) e-mail address BADOVINAC3@aol.com. Information was sent in July, 1998. Also included in the information sent was the following, which is assumed to be a brother of Amos Martin Whiteley, Sr.:

Charles Booth Whiteley, Sr. 20 Apr 1800 - 27 Apr 1875
Charles Booth Whiteley, Jr. Apr 1841 -1891
James Clark Whiteley 26 Oct 1826 - 4 May 1904
Nancy Scott Whiteley 28 Feb 1850 (dau of James Clark Whiteley, granddaughter of Charles Booth Sr., Rose Mary's great-grandmother.)

Rose Mary reports having gotten some of the dates from death certificates, some from "Tennessee Valley Texas 1851 -- 1951" by Ann Joseph, and some from "Joseph Whiteley, Sr. and His Descendants in America 1751 -1990" by Doris Easley Estes.

The lineage provided by Edwin Leigh Tucker (which apparently comes from the original research of Shirley Erickson's mother) gives several more children to this marriage. Some were enumerated in 1860 in Newton County, Missouri with their step-mother and their father:

Franklin Township - Newton County, MO
Whitely      Martin       53M       TN
      Sarina       39F       TN
      James       15M       IL
      Sarah       10F       IL
      Winneford 7F       AR
      Samuel       6M       MO
      Prissilla       6F       MO
      Sarina       4F       MO
      Amos       2M       MO
      Christina       4/12F       AR
BOYDSTUN, John       13M       AR
      Emily       7F       AR
Whitely      Lewis       3M       MO

By 1880, in Bell County, Texas, the following children are still home:

Whiteley, Amos Martin 72M KY
Serena 58F TN
Amos Martin 22M MO
Christina 20F MO
Levina Catherine 16F TX
Laura Ann 14F TX

Res. in Newton Co, MO 1850; Bell Co, TX 1860

Shirley Nobles Erickson (shirley@htcomp.net) writes in February 2000 that the lineage as given by Edwin Leigh Tucker was actually researched by her mother, Annabelle Pennington Nobles Stone. She and Edwin Leigh Tucker's mother, Kay, were sisters.

Shirley also notes that there are errors in the genealogy, and promises to discuss them. Her mother researched the family from 1963 until her death in 1996. Shirley and her husband, for her grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary in 1976, put the files together into a book. In 1995, Shirley and her mother updated all the information into 6 books. The original and updated versions were submitted to LDS.

Notes for J
OHN PRUITT BOYDSTUN:
John Boydstun's farm is said to be near Maxdale, Bell Co, TX. Shirley Ericson says both Serena and Amos Whiteley are buried on the Boydstun farm in Bell County, Texas.

A John P. Boydstun (who is too old to be this one, but record has not been identified) appears in 1834 on the Arkansas Territory Tax List living in Crittenden County, AR.

John P. Boydston is found on the 1850 US Census in Prairie Township, Prairie County, Arkansas:
Boydston, John P.       29      b. TN
      Cyrena      27      b. TN
      William      8      b. AR
      John C.      2      b. AR

John P. Boydston died in Newton County, Missouri, in 1854 and his wife and second husband are found on the 1860 census there, with John's children in their step-father's household.

No source I have yet found explains how John Boydstun was born in Tennessee, lived in Arkansas, died in Missouri, and had a farm in Texas where his widow and 2nd husband came to be buried. It may be that the farm obtained its name from one of his children, perhaps John C. Boydston.

  Notes for LAURA ANN WHITELEY:
Clyde Gotcher sends the complete Widow's application for pension submitted by Laura A. Gotcher in Coryell County, Texas. Additional information on the application gives her date of birth as 20 Jun 1863 in Williamson County, Texas.

He served in Company D of the 15th Texas Cavalry from February 1862 until the close of the war.

His wife was awarded benefits upon his death.

Her death certificate in Coryell County is attached, listing the immediate cause of death as being Uremia due to chronic pyclorephritis and senile degeneration. Her name is given as Mrs. Laura Ann Gotcher, daughter of Martin Whitley and Syrenia Boydston. Information is given by Aaron Gotcher. Death date is 8 Dec 1958. Mrs. Gotcher lived at 305 W. Bridge Street in Gatesville, Texas, for 9 years, the home of her daughter, Miss Bettie Gotcher. She was buried at Restland Cemetery, Gatesville, Texas. Arrangements were made by Scott's Funeral Home.

  Notes for JAMES ANDREW GOTCHER:
Information on this family was obtained on the Internet in the family files of Robbie Love Giles. For James A. Gotcher, she cites the following sources:
1850 US Census - Collin Co, TX
CSA Pension Application #14981
She says that James A. Gotcher qualified for a small pension which was not awarded until after he died.
She also states that James A. Gotcher served in the Spanish American War.

Clyde Gotcher sent in July 1998 a copy of the CSA Pension Application:

#14981 James Andrew Gotcher
Coryell County, Post Office, Killeen, R #4
Filed 1909, approved 31 Aug 1909.

Noted on the papers is a death date of 23 Dec 1917 near Killeen, Bell Co, TX. Later in the papers is the widow's 1918 application which states that J. A. Gotcher died at home. This is certified by the Undertaker, R. M. Cole, who adds that Gotcher died of pneumonia. He further states the body was buried in Sugarloaf Cemetery in Corryell County, Texas.

J.A. Gotcher states that he was discharged at the close of the war. He further states that he is 67 years old, born in Clay County, Missouri. He lived in Texas 65 years, presently living in Coryell County. He lived the last 6 years at P.O. Killeen, RFD #4 and was a farmer.

The Adjutant General adds that records show an enlistment date of 1 March 1862 and surrender at Citronelle on 4 May 1865. He was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi 9 May 1865. Surrender records list his name as J. H. Gotcher, but the records indicate this is an error.
