Notes for J
OSEPH ** ROGER BROOKE:
Joseph Brooke is believed to stem from one of the historical Brooke families from Maryland; however, among the existing genealogies, reference to Joseph has not been found.
Joseph migrated to Wilkes Co., Georgia about the year 1800, it is believed, as part of a Catholic migration. A Catholic church was built at Locust Grove (now in Warren Co.) and a second church was built at Sharon (now in Talliferro Co.). a number of Brooke burials have been found at Locust Grove.

**Reference to the building of a church can be found in WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, WILL BOOK A.

On the decease of their father William, I give grandson William Thompson, granddaughters, Julia and Eliza Thompson, certain slaves. To son Henry Bradford Thompson, slaves, cotton machine, etc.. To daughter Fenson Hargraves, certain slaves. To granddaughter, Anne Seemes, not 16, a slave under the management of my son-in-law, George Hargraves and son H. Bradford Thompson. Should Henry Semmes or any Semmes grandchildren die before 16, property returned to estate. To grandson George Hargraves, a slave. Gives land for a priest's home, according to the rights of the Roman Catholic Church if established within two years. Two acres to be laid off by my son Henry Bradford Thompson so as to include the burying ground, chapel, and spring, the northern line to be fixed about five yards from Ignatius Semmes grave, gift to the Roman Catholic Church for a grave yard. Mentions a deed of gift from Ignatius Semmes to his daughters Annie and Henrietta Seemes, of slaves. Wife Elizabeth and Henry Bradford Thompson, Excrs. Signed December 9, 1809. Probated May 7, 1810. John McLaughlin, John Brooks, A Grier, Test.

The name of Joseph Brooke appears in the 1803, 1804, and 1806 Wilkes Co., Georgia Land Lotteries. In each case he is identified as a single male with one draw. In 1806, he was living in Capt. James Edge's District. Joseph also drew in the Gold Lottery of 1832 from Capt. Campbell's District in Wilkes County. As a married man, he was given two draws. Anotation also indicates he was a soldier, possibly in the Cherokee Wars. Listed also on the 1832 Gold Lottery were two of his sons, John Francis Brooke, 1 draw, and James R. Brooke, 1 draw.
The name Jospeh "Brooks" appears next to that of "John Brooks" (son of James), 2 draws, in two of the above Land Lotteries, and it is suspected, but not proven, that this John Brooks/Brooke is his father or brother. This is the same "John Brooks" listed in the Will of Joseph Thompson. Jospeh Thompson is further identified as having married Ann Elizabeth Brooke on April 1, 1779, First German Evangelical Reformed Church, Frederick County, Maryland.
Joseph and Sarah were married in 1806, most likely in Wilkes Co., Georgia. They settled in the western section of the county. Through a series fo annexations that begun in1825 and were completed in 1835, this became part of Taliferro Coutny, Georgia. It is after this last annexation that we find the Brooke name appearing in Taliferro County records. Records for the Brooke's can also be found in Warren and Jasper Counties.

Joseph is probably the "Joseph Brooks" mentioned in the Will of James B. Thompson (WILKES COUNTY, GEORGIA, BOOK B, p. 26), as follows:
*****LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JAMES B. THOMPSON, dated December 3, 1813 and proven July 1814, names wife Priscilla, nephew James Thompson, Jr., nephew William Thompson, Jr., (thier father being deceased), godson Joseph W. Luckett, cousin Joseph Brooks of Jasper County. Excrs: William R. Luckett and brother Henry B. Thompson. Wit: Henry B. Thompson, William R. Luckett and George Lewis.*****
Joseph is identified as a trustee of Raytown Academy in TALIFERRO COUNTY, GEORGIA, DEED BOOK B, dated June 18, 1838, p. 483, as follows:
Aaron W. Grier to Owen Holladay, Gilchrist Overton, Joseph Brooke, John M. Anthony, and Aaron W. Grier "as Trustees of Raytown Academy." Gift of Aaron W. Grier. Test: John Francis Brooke, Maynard Chandler. (John Francis Brooke is Joseph's oldest son.)

Joseph and Sarah migrated to Marion Station, Lauderdale County, Mississippi about 1845. Joseph and Sarah bought a town lot in Marion, purchasing also additional land before his death in 1856. A number of the sons of Joseph were known to have been attorneys, and Joseph was reputed to be an early Probate Judge of Lauderdale County, Mississippi. This distinction, however, probably lies with James W. Brooke, a native of Alabama, who was Lauderdale County Probate Judge during the Civil War period. The Brookes were closely affiliated with Alexander Hamilton Stephens, attorney, and later Vice Prsident of the Confederacy.

Lauderdale Co., Mississippi, Probate Book G, page 146, Shows J. R. Brooke, administrator to sell Land Warrant, State of Mississippi, Lauderdale County, Probate Court, April Term, 1857.
* * The petition of James R. Brooke, the administrator, and Joseph Brooke deceased, respectfully, Showeth unto your honor, that the said decedant?, At the time of his death was seized and possessed of a Land Warrant: Issued to him by I. Minot?, Commission of Pensions, under and by authority of an Act of Congress of March 3, 1855, granting bounty lands to officers and soldiers engaged in the military service of the United States, Calling for one hundred and twenty acres of land, and which said Land Warrant is numbered 69.730. And countersigned, L. Q. Jenks?.
Your pensioner further shows that Joseph Brooke, at the time of his death left him, surviving, the following heirs and distributees who are entitled to this distribution upon his estate, to wit, John F. Brooke, Walter W. Brooke, John G. Willis, William T. Brooke,Ignatius R. Brooke, who are nonresidents and live beyond the limits of this state and L. B. Moore, O. F. M. Holladay, Samuel Simmons, Josiah P. Brooke and Sarah Brooke who live and reside in this county. And your petitioners further shows and suggests unto your honor that the said Land Warrant cannot be equally and benificially be divided with advantage among the said heirs nor could the one hundred and twenty acres of land if located under and by virtue of law warrant be equally and fairly divided with advantage among the heirs without a sale thereof and he therefore alleges and says that it will be to the interests and advantages of the said heirs that the said land warrant should be sold and proceeds of said sell divided amongst said heirs.
Wherefore, and for these considerations, your petitioner prays your honorable court to grant him an order and decree of sale for the said Land Warrant and also for an order for publication to the said heirs who are nonresidents and for citations to issue to the said heirs who reside in this county and for such other and further orders decrees as the nature of this case shall require and your petitioner.... duty bound will pray.
s/James R. Brooke, Adm.
Sworn to and subscribed before me the 21st day of August, 1857. W. B. ?Hancock, Justice of the Peace.
