"Lawrence "Grandpa" Fagan, age 78 years, died at his home four miles NE of town after a long and painful illness. Formerly lived in Ohio-moved here six years ago-a member of the Catholic Church. Leaves wife, two daughters, Mrs Dan Pinney (Margaret) and Mrs John Stanton (Mary Ann) and four sons, Martin Fagan, the oldest, living in Pa., Daniel G. Fagan, William Fagan and James Fagan all of this county. Buried Catholic Cemetery on Monday. "

In spite of its very Irish appearance (-gan is one of the most common terminations of Irish surnames) Fagan must be regarded (subject to a reservation to be mentioned later) as a family name of Norman origin. At the same time it must be pointed out that it is not an English name. It is derived from the Latin word paganus. For many centuries it has been associated with Counties Dublin and Meath. As early as the year 1200 one William Fagan was the owner of extensive house property in the city of Dublin and fifty years later we find the family firmly established in the neighbouring counties with a seat, acquired a little later, at Feltrim, Co. Dublin. A branch of this family was also found in Kerry and another in Cork city where Christopher Fagan took refuge in 1497 - he had been a supporter of Perkin Warbeck's claim to the throne and Cork was solidly behind that pretender. From the Kerry branch were descended the Fagans who distinguished themselves in the service of France in the eighteenth century and were ennobled in that country. The name is not really numerous in Ireland - it is estimated that about two thousand of the population are so called : almost all these are natives of Leinster, fifty per cent of whom are Dubliners. There is also, it is true, a Gaelic Irish family of O Faodhagain, anglicized Fagan, which belongs to Co. Louth: it may be a corrupt form of the well known name O'Hagan but Fr. John Ryan thinks not. One of these, Edmund O'Fagan, was an officer int he Ultonia regiment of the Spanish army in 1778.

While the fact that Fagan is in most cases of Norman origin is accepted. Fr. John Ryan disagrees with the statement, made by Fr. Woulfe and here that O Faoghagain is a variant of O'Faodhagain (O'Hagan) and other scholars concur. They say it is a distinct sept of eastern Airghialla (Oriel). There Fagan, Fegan, Feighan and Feehan are numerous and much confused; probably these all derive from O'Faodhagain.

The two best known Fagans in the past were Robert Fagan (1745-1816), born in Cork, who was a diplomat and portrait painter; and James Fleming Fagan (1828-1893), American planter, soldier and public official of Irish descent.

Note: Family consensus per researcher Bud Sullivan is that Lawrence lived in Dublin. One family elder states that Lawrence was from County Downs near Dublin.

Martin first appeared in the U.S. in the 1850 census, living with his father and mother and siblings in Peebles Twp., Allegheny Co., Penna. His parents each were shown as having been born in Ireland; he and his younger sister Catharine where shown as having been born in England; the remaining siblings were listed as having been born in Pennsylvania. Based on birth dates of the children, it appears that the family came to the U.S. between 1841 and 1843.

Naturalization records show that Martin Fagan, subject of Queen Victoria, was underage when he declared his intention to become a citizen, and was naturalized October 29, 1856.

Martin next appeared in the 1860 census as a resident of Cambria County, Conemaugh Borough, Pa. His occupation was listed as coal miner and the value of his personal estate was $40. His first son, Lawrence, was just seven months old and was born in Pennsylvania. In addition, Hannah Dougherty, his wife Grace's mother, was living with them.

By the 1870 census, the Fagan's had added children Mary and Edward, were now living in Lower St. Clair Twp., had a personal estate valued at $150 and real estate valued at $3000.

In 1875 Martin first appeared in the Pittsburgh city directory as a miner living on Ormsby Hill, South Side. Over the next five years he was listed annually as a miner living on Morgan Street, 27th Ward, South Side. The 1880 census found Martin with a new wife Florence who went by the name Alice, son Lawrence now employed as a schoolteacher and living at home, and children Gracie and William(born by Alice) joining Mary and Edward. The census showed that Martin had been unemployed for six months during the census year.

While the 1881 city directory listed Martin as a saloon operator, he must have returned to coal mining in 1882 and combined that occupation with being a grocer until the end of his life. It appears that his widow Alice continued with the grocery business at least into 1915 as she was listed at various times as a grocer, tobacco shop operator, and confectioner.

Martin's death certificate showed that he had lived on Morgan Street for 33 years, having moved there from Johnstown, Pa. He was buried in Saint Peter's Cemetery.

From May 10,l862 until at least Sept 15,l862 he served as a Private in the 12th N.Y.State Militia Infantry in H.Co.

Tour extended past Aug l0th l862 capture Sept 15th by Gen Stonewall Jackson men-exchanged for Confederate troops in Yankee Prisons.They were loaded on exchange steamer back to New York

This is what he put together but never reseached farther.

Next tour three years enlisted in the l4th N.Y.Calvary(Co.C or the I .Co) from Sept l862 to until July l863 or was drafted into the l8th N.Y.Cavalry,C.Co.no earlier July l863.

On July 11,l863 all of the fully trained l4th Calvarymen were loaded aboard a steamer bound for New Orleans-ordered off the boat in N.York because of the Draft Riots.

The l8th N.Y.Calvary ordered into service at the time for duty in New York.He served in both units until early or mid l864

All twelve companies of the l8th and 6 of the twelve companies of the l4th served in Louisana and Arksansas.

A seventh company,Co.M of the l4th served in Western Florida.The othr five companies of the 14th Calvary probably remained in N.Y. The l4th New York became known as the Metropolitan Regiment L.

later in W.Va for a brief time with a detachment of the l8th NY. he was reassigned to the 4th W.Va Infantry C.Co. under Gen George Crook,command of the Army of W.Va.

Will Fagan Died Monday After Stroke

William Sylvester Fagan,78 year old Doniphan resident ,died at l2:15 pm Monday at hte Community Hospital one hour after being admitted for treatment.He had suffered a stroke earlier that morning after returning home from downtown Doniphan.

Born April 10,l882 in Ohio,he had lived in Doniphan for 12 years,moving her from ST.Louis where he had retired as a pipefitter.

He was a member of Pipefitters Local No.562 inSt.Louis.

He was married July 9,l907 in St.Louis to the former Miss Agnes Ederer who survives along with a son,Albert Martin Fagan of St.Louis.

three grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren .Others of his family are two brothers,Dan and Martin Fagan of Peoria,Ill and two sisters,Mrs Bridget Arnold of Poplar Bluff and Mrs.Mary Sullivan of Peoria.

George C. Lansmon

Chaffee-Aug. 8, 1969

George C. Lansmon, a retired farmer of Chaffee Route 2, was pronounced dead on arrival at a Cape hospital at 2:05 Friday afternoon, following a freak accident in which he was dragged nearly 100 yards by an automobile.

Cape County Coroner Donald A. Kremer said Mr. Lansmon was working on his car at his home. The engine was running and apparently the vehicle slipped into reverse gear. Moving backward and dragging Mr. Lansmon into a soybean field behind the house, he added. Mr. Lansmon was found by his son, James R. Lansmon of Cape, pinned beneath the left front door of the vehicle.

Mr. Lansmon, 79 years old, was born near Cape on Sept. 15, 1889. He married the former Miss Catherine Fagan of St. Louis on Dec. 26, 1923. She survives.

He served with the Army during World War I in France. He was a mechanic by trade.

Surviving, other than his wife and son, are a daughter, Mrs. Clarence Culpepper, Meridan, MS, a sister, Mrs. Mary LaCroix of Chaffee, and seven grandchildren.

The body is at Bisplinghoff Funeral Home here where the rosary will be recited at 8 Sunday night. He was a member of St. Ambrose Church here where services will be at 9 Monday morning with the pastor, Rev. James Holmes, officiating. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery here.

What follows are from the notes of a conversation between James Bauer and Dede Wyland, a step-granddaughter of Martin Joseph Sartory. (As Martin died in 1965, her impressions were probably from the period of about 1953 or 54 until 1965, a 10-12 year period as seen through the eyes of a youngster. She also talked with an older brother about her step-grandfather before we had this discussion.):

Beside working at WCAE & WWSW, Joe (the only name that she knew him by) also worked at KDKA. (comment: I suspect that this was from after 1935 until he retired.)

Dede's mother and grandmother told her that Joe had helped develop play-by-play radio for baseball games; said he had learned Morse code (comment: he was a telephone operator & then telegrapher between 1900-1910); he and the people at KDKA came up with the idea of using Morse code for baseball.

At KDKA, Joe had a pilot for sports' interview shows - it was called the Cracker Barrel.

Dede's mom worked at KDKA as a hostess.

Dede remembers that Joe had a wonderful, deep, rich voice and laugh. She lived with her grandmother & Joe for periods of about a year on two or three occasions during her childhood. She remembered one time when they were living in Daytona Beach that the mailman asked "are you THE Joe Sartory who was the radio announcer in Pittsburgh?".

She said that Joe & her grandmother lived in Mt. Lebanon until the late 40's; had a beautiful home. Her older brother was close to Joe during that time.

Joe & her grandmother moved to Brookfield, Wisc. in the early 50's and again, had a beautiful ranch-style home and a lot of property. When they moved to Daytona Beach he was retired and they lived at 362 Hartford Ave., about 1/2 block from the ocean.

Dede's own mother married at age 19 (about 1931 or so) and lived in Pittsburgh, then Montana, and Wisconsin.

In 1963, Joe and his wife(Elsie) moved back to Wisconsin when Elsie became ill with uterine cancer so that Dede's mom & her husband could help with her care. Elsie died in 1964.

When Elsie died, Joe was shattered. Dede's brother found him a block away from the house, sitting on a curb and sobbing. He had been very much in love with Elsie and was a very good husband, very loyal. Dede's mom and her husband moved back to Florida & took Joe along. He started having severe chest pains and the family soon moved back to Wisconsin. He died eight months after his wife, in 1965.

Dede remembers Joe as being very quiet, about 5 foot, 8 inches tall, slender, always very tan, muscular, no fat, great smile, peaceful, with a big smile and a contagious, deep laugh. His passion was gardening and he was always working in the garden. She mentioned his piercing blue eyes several times and said that he was always a pipe smoker.

When he went out, Joe always brought 'goodies' home for Dede's older brother when he returned. He liked to watch boxing on TV and would get so wrapped up in it that he would 'shadow box' while watching.

While living in Florida, he usually wore Bermuda shorts and a nice t-shirt. He and Elsie always went to auctions together; she always drove.

They both died in Wisconsin; were cremated; and had their ashes scattered at sea off the Florida coast.

Ex-Press City Editor Lawrence Fagan Dies

Lawrence J. Fagan, legendary Pittsburgh Press city editor, died early yesterday in his sleep.

Mr. Fagan died of an apparent heart attack at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Herald of 2750 Beechwood Blvd., Squirrel Hill. His death came just three days short of his 80th birthday.

He was born Oct. 31, 1892 in Pittsburgh, one of 11 children of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence M. Fagan. He was brought up in the teeming South Side mill district.

As he once put it later, the family "went silk stocking" and moved to the more fashionable East End.

City editor at The Press for 30 years, he retired in 1960 and moved with his wife, Hilda, to Scottsdale, Ariz., where his hobby was raising cactus.

Mrs. Fagan died May 22, 1971, at the age of 78, and Mr. Fagan spent most of his time since then visiting here with his four daughters and grandchildren.

Son of the chief probation officer for Allegheny County, he began his career in 1914 with the Tri-State News Service, an agency that collected local news for seven papers Pittsburgh had at that time.

His father helped with contacts and the young reporter soon made a name for himself, covering the police, (undecipherable), morgue, jail and detective bureau.

Later, as a reporter for The Press, he wrote such a moving story about a condemned slayer's farewell to his wife that the execution was stayed and the sentence changed to life imprisonment.

Mr. Fagan joined The Press in 1924 and six years later became city editor.

In that position he excelled as what became popularly known at the time as "one of the last of the tough Irish breed of city editors".

He was tough, but it was all on the outside.

As for toughness, there was an encounter with the late John McNulty, a writer who left The Press for the New Yorker magazine.

McNulty was having trouble with a story and, as the deadline approached, Mr. Fagan demanded: "What the hell are you doing?"

McNulty's reply was, "I'm thinking."

To which Mr. Fagan snapped, "Well, stop thinking and start writing."

Years later McNulty showed the inner side of Mr. Fagan with a New York story about an elderly woman who had come into the office at census time.

She was worried because the census takers had overlooked her, she became afraid the census would not be accurate.

Mr. Fagan told her to put the fears aside and then sent a reporter, Pete Botsford, to her home, posing as a census taker.

On another occasion, Mr. Fagan fired a reporter for missing an assignment because of drinking.

The reporter took a train to Gettysburg, got drunker, and wired Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to Mr. Fagan, collect.

Mr. Fagan accepted the charges.

Mr. Fagan had wizardry in "sniffing out" stories, a sixth sense for news and usually a baleful, frosty stare for press agents.

And if mail came to his desk incorrectly addressed "Fagin," after the notorious Dickens villain, he would invariably toss it unopened into the wastebasket, no matter who was the sender.

He abhorred physical exercise, but showed a passion for bowling on the green with a group of cronies in Frick Park.

Mr. Fagan was graduated from Central High School and took night courses for awhile at the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University.

But that was the extent of his formal education.

He saw that all his daughters went through college. Mary Hilda nearly made a U.S. Olympic swimming team, losing by one second to Eleanor Holm.

Mr. Fagan is survived his four daughters, Mrs. Herald; Mrs. Mary Hilda Harrington; Mrs. Gertrude Durr, all of Pittsburgh; and Mrs. Agnes Donovan of Sanford, N.C., 14 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 P.M. today and 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. tomorrow at the McCabe Brothers Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut St., East Liberty.

Funeral services will be at 10 A.M., Tuesday in St. Philomena's Church, Squirrel Hill.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Hazelwood.

Isabell McKeen Sartory, 90, of Pittsburgh, PA died October 5, 2002, at her

daughters home in Cary, NC. Isabell McKeen Sartory was born March 19, 1912,

in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Rebecca Simpson and Charles V. McKeen. She was

the wife of the late Paul Joseph Sartory. Isabell was a lifetime member of

the Sheraden United Methodist Church and was a Past Worthy Matron of Cyrus

Chapter #78 of the Order of Eastern Star.

A Memorial Service will be held November 9, 2002, at 4:00pm at the Sheraden

United Methodist Church, 2966 Chartiers Ave.

Isabell is survived by her children, Barbara S. Neilsen and husband Robert of

Cary, NC; Richard Sartory of Kansas City, MO and Rebecca S. Marshall and

husband Gerald of Gilbertsville, PA. She has nine grandchildren, nine

great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, she will be missed by

all. Isabell was preceded in death by two Sisters and five Brothers.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to Sheraden United

Methodist Church, 2966 Chartiers Ave. Pittsburgh, PA 15204.

"A Tribute to Nana

My name is Jenean Neilsen Todd.

I am one of Barbara's daughters and Isabell's oldest grandchild.

I want to say a few words about the person who brought us together today.

Some of you may have known her as Izzy McKeen: the strong-willed teenager who stepped up to the plate to take care of her father and brothers after her mother's death.

To some she was Isabell Sartory: the roller-skating queen who married Paul, but didn't tell her family for almost a year.

To others she was Aunt Iz: a caring woman ready to prepare a hearty meal, chase after a parade, or listen as you shared stories of your own children.

To three of you, she was Mum: a gentle woman who treasured your strengths, knew your weaknesses, and loved you in spite of everything.

A woman who would rather have your gang at the house playing Elvis too loudly, than hanging out on the street corner.

A woman who never lost her enthusiasm for an adventure.

She would put on a dress to hop on a bus heading downtown, or into a car for a Sunday drive, or onto a plane or a train.

She didn't care where she was going so long as she was moving!

Some of you knew her as Isabell: a card-playing, Steeler-cheering, Christian woman.

She worked hard, laughed long, and hummed whenever she hung out clothes or walked down to the station.

To others she was Izzy: a woman in perpetual motion.

She busied herself with spring and fall cleaning, card parties, church receptions, and walking in cemeteries.

To many of you she was Mrs. Sar: whether she was behind the counter at Bard's or shoveling snow off her sidewalk, she was enthusiastic and energetic.

She believed in honesty and integrity and lived her life that way.

She was all of those women.

But for several of us here today, she was Nana.

She had a warm hug, a little laugh, and was always glad to see us.

Her home was a haven when we were children; a special place full of smells to tickle your senses.... nectarines and fresh peach pie in the summer, an arid, crackling fire in winter, and the smell of the damp cellar-all year round!

It has been said that we gather traits from all the people who bless our lives.

For all of us, she was a blessing.

Quit high school at age 16 in order to go to work so that her younger brother, Joseph, could go to school. Worked at Joseph Hornes department store, Pittsburgh, Pa.

While growing up in the Pittsburgh area, the Sartory children lived at the following different addresses in Bellevue, Pa.: Roosevelt Avenue; with an uncle in Avalon; 33 Mead Ave.; 184 Sheridan Ave., and 111 Mead Avenue.

Mary Margaret was just over 71 years of age when she was involved in a tragic accident which took her life. She had had some extensive dental surgery and was experiencing considerable discomfort. Apparently she was taking some old newspapers from within her home to the top of the basement steps where she stored them until trash pickup, when she must have somehow stumbled or fell and tumbled all the way down the steps to the basement floor. The neighbors found her body the next day.

Notes for Francis Gregory BAUER:

Frank was born in Uniontown, Pa. and, from the age of seven, raised in the East End of Pittsburgh. Probably named after his grandfather, Franz Gregor Bauer. He attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Sacred Heart High School (1 year), and graduated from Peabody High School in Pittsburgh. At Peabody, he won honors not only in scholastics but in athletics as well. He took an active part in basketball and football and captained the baseball team. He enjoyed watching baseball and attended many games at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh which was a 15-minute walk from his home. He was physically a very solid man who was very powerful.

His first job in the late 1920's was at Pittsburgh Hospital (Washington Blvd. & Frankstown) between Homewood and East Liberty. He worked part-time as a telephone operator at the hospital and had a second job at the Pittsburgh Press, taking advertising proofs to stores for approval for $5. a week. He later moved into office work at the Press and spent about two years in the office. Later he moved to outside work for the Press and his first assignment gave him responsibility for the Dubois/Punxatawney area of Pennsylvania. It was necessary to buy a car and he bought his first one - a 1932 Chevrolet for $600. He covered a large territory - 8 counties - and went as far as to within 50 miles of Buffalo, NY. Winters were especially bad on the road - with tire chains being a necessity from November to April. This assignment lasted 9 months; then he was transferred to the McKees Rocks, Pa. area which he had for about seven months.

Frank's next assignment was to the Bellevue, Pa. territory which covered the boroughs of Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon, and Sewickly. It was only natural that when he became better acquainted with his carriers that one of the boys, Jack Sartory, would want his new boss to meet his sister, Mary Margaret. They married in Assumption Church in Bellevue, Pa. on Apr. 22, 1935 and John L. (Jack) Sartory was the best man.

Frank continued working for the Pittsburgh Press until he served in the Merchant Marine (1944- 45), during the second world war, making two convoy trips - NY to England and San Francisco to Hawaii. After the war, he returned to the Press and remained there until his retirement in the early 1970's. He moved to Daytona Beach, Fla. in 1974; then to Nashville, Tenn. in 1987.

In retirement as in working years, Frank remained an avid golfer. He delighted in having made holes-in-one at Venango Trail Golf Course, Warrendale, Pa. in 1961 and at Daytona Beach Golf & Country Club in 1975. Even when his health failed him in later years, he still enjoyed following the exploits of golfers on the professional tour.

Services for John L. Sartory, father of former Palm Beach Newspapers Inc. President Larry Sartory, will be held today.

Mr. Sartory, 75, died Tuesday.

An early resident of the Broward County community of Coral Springs, the senior Mr. Sartory worked for nearly 39 years for the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun-Sentinel. He began in the composing room and later became a supervisor in the newspapers' classified and retail advertising departments.

Born in Pittsburgh, Mr. Sartory moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1946 and to the brand-new community of Coral Springs 22 years later.

In Coral Springs, he served on the Planning and Zoning Board from 1974 to 1989. The city recognized his contributions last year by naming a community center after him .

Larry Sartory was president of PBNI, which publishes The Palm Beach Post, from 1982 until 1987.

In addition to his son, survivors include John Sartory's wife, Virginia; a second son, Thomas; and five grandchildren.

A Mass will be said at noon today at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Coral Springs.

Donations may be made to the West Broward Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
