Notes for Leuretha Monteagle Workman: Let's Remember Leureta!
Marian Baughman - Sep 30, 2003 - Excerpts from My Family .com web site I have missed Grandmother Retha birthday memorial so let's do what was a great success on the Workman Site. Several members on that site recorded what they remembered about Retha's, sister-in-law Priscilla. We found out several things about Priscilla we wouldn't have known otherwise. Please join us in this tribute to Leuretha Monteagle Workman Blankenship.
Marian Baughman - Sep 30, 2003 When Mother spoke of her mother, it was with the greatest respect. She told of the hectic days when the family went through an epidemic of small pox. Leuretha gathered herbs that she had learned to use for medicinal purposes, and treated each member of the family as they were stricken with the dreaded disease. When a doctor was finally on the scene he said, "Keep doin' what you're doin', Retha. Everyone is doin' fine! Everyone survived!
Mother also tells of her mom along with Mother and her siblings were taught to look for ginseng growing on the north side of a hill. They would gather it and sell it for fabric to make clothing for the school year.
The personal story that I treasure the most is when Grandmother Retha was ill, and mother took me along with her when she went, not realizing it of coarse, to see her mother for the last time. She said I was sitting on grandmother's lap, greatly enthalled with a gold bow shaped broach she was wearing. I was playing with it and grandmother said to mother. "Marian is to have this"! Well, I didn't get it than or ever, but that's beside the point. When Mother died, I was looking through her jewelry box and there was a gold bow shaped broach. I hadn't thought about it before, but it was one a good friend of mother's had given her. Quite a round about way, of getting my broach, but I immediately laid claim on it for myself.
