EDWARD BAXTER GENEALOGY

INTRODUCTION TO THE FAMILY GENEALOGIES

This summary follows the principal ancestor in each generation of the BAXTER GENEALOGY and the families into which he married. The genealogies of these families include all their known kin. The following sections cover: Edward Baxter (Generation 2), John (3), John Brady (4), John Edward (5) and John Brady (6).

EDWARD BAXTER (2)

(1780-1850) married (1806) ELEANOR BRADY (1785-1867) in County Longford, Ireland. He was born in Ardagh Parish, she in Killan Parish. They were the first of our Baxter's to come to the United States. They and their four oldest children were in Philadelphia, PA by 1819 and they had two more daughters. Edward's occupation for twenty years was as a tavern keeper,
He died in 1850, Eleanor in 1867; they and some of their family were buried in a vault at historic Old St. John's Catholic Church, downtown Philadelphia.

BRADY GENEALOGY. Research of John Baxter (3) resulted in the compilation of the family line of Thomas and Alice Brady of County Longford, Ireland and Philadelphia, PA, in the likelihood that Eleanor Brady Baxter and Thomas Brady may have been brother and sister. It includes Michael Barry Brady, a business partner of John Baxter in Tuscumbia, AL, and who knew Matthew Martin when he was a youngster. It remains unknown if Michael Brady first knew the Martin's and through them met John Baxter, or if he was a first cousin of John Baxter.

Michael B. Brady had a niece, Julia Alice Brady, who toured the South with him (1851-52) and kept a journal of her travels. She stayed with John Baxter's family in Tucsumbia, AL; with her aunt Margaret Brady (Mrs. William) McKeon in Memphis, TN; with Matthew Martin's family in New Orleans, LA; and with the David H.Davies (Davis) family in Louisville, KY, presumably no relation. Excerpts from her Journal are included in the appropriate family genealogies.

JOHN BAXTER (3)

(1811-1874), the son of Edward (2) Baxter. The genealogy follows him to Fayetteville, TN (1834) where he worked for his future brother-in-law Matthew Martin, enrolled for six months in the Tennessee Volunteers (1836) during the Second Seminole Indian (Florida) War, and where he married (1843) ANN CARROLL MARTIN (1816-1869), daughter of Owen and Ann (Carroll?). They moved to Tuscumbia, Alabama, where he was a merchant. Included are three long letters Ann Martin Baxter wrote to the Sisters at Nazareth, KY in 1850, 1861, 1862. Ann died in 1869, John in 1874; they, two sons and a granddaughter were buried in Tuscumbia.

The Baxter Genealogy traces Edward Baxter's other children and their descendents in Philadelphia, PA. The most detailed are those of Margaret Baxter (Mrs. Michael) Farren and Thomas and Lydia (Snyder) Baxter. Each person's biography is recorded in the appropriate generation throughout the Baxter Genealogy. Contact was made with a great-great grandson of Margaret Baxter Farren, but none with a descendent of Thomas Baxter.

In the Civil War, John Baxter's son, Thomas Emmett Baxter, fought on the side of the Confederacy in an Alabama regiment; the son of John's brother Thomas of Philadelphia, Frank Baxter, fought on the side of the Union in a Pennsylvania regiment. First cousins were on opposite sides of the war, although not at the same time.

MARTIN GENEALOGY. OWEN MARTIN and ANN (CARROLL?), were from Belfast, Ireland and married around 1800. It remains unknown when the family came to the United States; they were in Fayetteville, TN around 1825. The genealogy includes
the family of Ann's brother, Matthew Martin, a merchant in and New Orleans, LA. It remains unknown when or where Owen Martin and his wife died.

JOHN BRADY BAXTER (4)

(1848-1901), son of John (3) Baxter, was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. The genealogy follows his brothers, Thomas Emmett Baxter (1844-1871) to Desha County, Arkansas, and Matthew Carroll Baxter (1850-1884) to Floyd, West Carroll Parish, LA.

John Brady Baxter was the only one who had surviving issue and everyone in my family line is descended from him. After the Civil War he moved to Philadelphia, PA (1867), New York City (1870) and Brooklyn, NY (1872), where he married (1874) ALICE A. KELLY (1854-1900). He began his own business, John B. Baxter, (1878), and his occupation was variously shown as commission merchant, upholstery manufacturer, drygoods, trimmings, undertakers drygoods and furnishings, coffin manufacturer, caskets. He sold the business (1898) to his sons, James Emmett and John Edward Baxter and the firm became known as John B. Baxter's Sons.

KELLY, GORDON GENEALOGIES. Alice A. Kelly was the daughter of JAMES KELLY (1826-1900) and ALICE GORDON (1826-1891) who married in Ireland around 1853. The Kelly's were from County Tyrone and came to the U.S. around 1849-50. His occupation was shown as anchors, shipsmith. The Gordon family too was from County Tyrone, and most likely came to the U.S. around the time the Kelly's did; perhaps they came together. Both families lived in New York City and Brooklyn, NY.

JOHN EDWARD BAXTER (5)

(1877-1958), son of John Brady (4) Baxter, was born in Brooklyn, NY. He married (1902) KATHERINE VINCENTINE BYRNE (1878-1953) in Brooklyn. She was the daughter of THOMAS EUGENE BYRNE (1852-1917) and JANE AGNES MOORE (1853-1920), who were married around 1876 in Brooklyn.
The Baxter Genealogy includes the biographies of the seven children of John Brady and Alice Kelly Baxter: James Emmett & Jane (Corcoran) Baxter who had no children; John Edward & Katherine (Byrne) Baxter; Alice Carroll (Mrs. John K.) Bolen who had one unmarried daughter; George Gordon & Juanita (Byrne) Baxter, (sister of Katherine Byrne BaxterFlorence Martin (Mrs. James Harmon) Cruickshank; Charles Carroll & Anna (Manley) Baxter; and Theodore Maurice & Ursula (Seeburger) Baxter. Everyone in my Baxter family line is descended from one of these five families.

James Emmett Baxter sold his share in John B. Baxter's Sons to his uncle, George E. Kelly (brother of Alice Kelly Baxter) and the firm became Baxter & Kelly (1903). The firm was incorporated in New York State (1905) as Baxter, Kelly & Faust, Inc. John E. Baxter's brothers joined the firm: George to the New York City office; Carroll and Ted to Philadelphia, PA where they ran the plant, married and raised their families. When John E. Baxter died (1958), the firm was in the hands of his sons John Brady Baxter, Gerard Thomas Baxter, and Robert Byrne Baxter.

BYRNE GENEALOGY. Thomas Eugene Byrne, Vice President of the Kings County (NY) Lighting Company, was the son of EDWARD (EDMOND) BYRNE (1819-1893) and MARY MACKEY (1822-1894), who married (1850) in Troy, NY. Edward (Edmond) Byrne was born in Tipperary, Ireland and came to the U.S. probably around the late 1830's. Mary Mackey came from Ireland, probably in the l830's or 1840's. The family moved to Brooklyn, NY (1854) where he worked for the Citizens Gas Light Company. The genealogy includes the descendents of his sons, John Bernardine Byrne (1851-1930) and Edward Joseph Byrne (1859-1935).

Jane Agnes Moore was the daughter of ARCHIBALD DUNLAP MOORE (1801- 1861) and CATHERINE FLEMING FOGARTY (1829-1894), who were married (1852) in Philadelphia, PA or Brooklyn, NY. They lived for several years in Philadelphia and while there, his occupation was shown in the New York City Directory (1855-1862) as lawyer; no occupation was shown for him in the Philadelphia, PA City Directory.

FOGARTY GENEALOGY. After Archibald Dunlap Moore's death, Catherine Fogarty Moore moved back to Brooklyn, NY and around 1866 she married Patrick M. Fannon (1824-1918) in Brooklyn. The genealogy includes the descendents of her sister Anna Fogarty Fitzpatrick.

MOORE GENEALOGY. Archibald Dunlap Moore's parents were MICHAEL MOORE, SR. (1753-1841) and JANE DUNLAP (1763-1853), who were married (1796) in Trinity Church, New York City. It is not clear if he was born in England or in New York. His occupation was shown as shopkeeper, grocer. The genealogy includes the descendents of the Moore's other son, Michael Moore (Jr) (1803-1888), who married (1831) Maria Sherman (1831-1899) in Trenton Falls, Oneida County, NY, and had nine children. The family ran the Trenton Falls Hotel for many years.

DUNLAP GENEALOGY. Jane Dunlap was born in New York. Presumably her parents were ARCHIBALD DUNLAP (?-Bef.1784) and ELEANOR BRASIER (1746- 1826), who were married (1759) in Trinity Church, New York City. The genealogy
includes Jane Dunlap's brother Archibald Dunlap (1761-1821), a block master, blockmaker, and her sister Letitia (Letty) Dunlap (1769- 1851). According to research, the Dunlaps were Dutch and it remains unknown when they came to the U.S.

JOHN BRADY BAXTER (6)

The son of John Edward (5) Baxter, was born (1907) in Brooklyn, NY. He married (1930) MARION FRANCES REYNOLDS (1906-1990) in Brooklyn. She was the daughter of CHARLES GAVAN REYNOLDS (1863-1926) and MYRA THERESA CAMPBELL (1865-1937), who were married (1890) either in New York City or Brooklyn. John B. Baxter married (1992) Dorothy Dimmitt (Sanders) Hamlin (1912), daughter of of Lawrence Dimmitt and Hebe Lukas.

John B. Baxter worked for his father's textile firm, Baxter, Kelly & Faust, Inc., New York City from 1928. The firm was sold (1970) by the three brothers, John, Gerard and Robert Baxter, having been a family-owned business for ninety-two years. The genealogy covers the children of those in the previous generation, including the daughter of John K. and Alice Baxter Bolen who prepared a family genealogy, referred to in the biographies as the Alison Baxter Bolon Genealogy (1948).

REYNOLDS GENEALOGY. Charles Gavan Reynolds, a Brooklyn home builder, was the son of MICHAEL JOSEPH JOHN REYNOLDS (1830-1888) and ELLEN C. GAVAN (1835-1877), who were married (1854) in Brooklyn. Michael J.J. Reynolds
came to the U.S. from Ireland around 1840, presumably with his family, and settled in Brooklyn around the mid 1850's. He was a builder, mason, and contractor.

GAVAN GENEALOGY. Ellen Gavan was the daughter of MATTHIAS (1810-1888) and MARY (Costello?) (1810-1854) GAVAN, who were married around 1834 in England. The family came to the U.S. by 1849 and settled in Brooklyn. Matthias Gavan and his son-in-law Michael J. J. Reynolds were builders, masons and worked together for many years in Brooklyn.

CAMPBELL GENEALOGY. Myra Campbell Reynolds was the daughter of HUGH JOSEPH CAMPBELL (1833-1902) and MARIA MCKINNEY (1836-1886), who married (1855) in New York City. His occupation was variously shown as tin smith, tinware, canmaker. He was the son of MORRIS (MAURICE) (1810-?) and CATHERINE (?) (1813-1888) CAMPBELL, who were married around 1833 in Ireland. They came to the United States (1836) and settled in New York City. Morris's occupation was shown as stage driver and hostler, i.e., one who takes care of horses at an inn or stable; groom.

MCKINNEY GENEALOGY. Maria McKinney, born in Worcester, MA, was the daughter of CORNELIUS (1805-1885) and ELLEN (?) (1810-1897) MCKINNEY, who were married around 1810 in Ireland. Cornelius McKinney was from County Donegal and possibly too his wife. They came to the U.S. by 1835, lived in Worcester, MA (1836), Goshen, NY (1840) and by 1850 were in New York City. His occupation was shown as laborer.

GENERATION 7

Continues with the biographies of the children of those in the previous generation, and includes some information on their children (GENERATION 8), and lists their grandchildren (GENERATION 9). The number of John Brady & Alice Kelly Baxter's great grandchildren in generation 7 comes to ninety-nine. For now, it is left to members of generation 8 or 9 to compile biographies of their generation(s) and onward.
ELLEN (?) (1810-1897) MCKINNEY, who were married around 1810 in Ireland. Cornelius McKi
