Louella Francis Hoop was raised and aparently adopted by her uncle, Daniel H. Gillespie (her uncle on her mothers side) and Ann Hoop (her aunt on her fathers side). The couple had no children of their own. She went to high school in Carrollton, Ilinois. Her Report Card for 1878 was signed by "D. H. Gillespie". They also raised Chester K. Gillespie and T.L. Gillespie (female).

Louella came to Arizona in 1911.

There is conflicting evidence as to Louella's birth place.
