Cussed and used a lot of profanities according to family members.

Built and raced his own cars. Drove through a fence during a race because the throttle stuck. He struck his head, and that was the end of his driving. He still raced his cars, but with another driver behind the wheel. His son Groll would work on the car with him, and help set it up for the race.

His son Merle raced stock cars, and was well known for his racing skills.
