Great Grandfather John Scanlan migrated from Glouria Co kerry Ireland to Beechworth Victoria Australia on the ship the Southern Empire from Plymouth arriving on the 28th Jan 1862.He came with brother William and sister Johanna to join some cousins and fellow Kerrymen and like many before him in the search for wealth and prosperity in the gold fields. He settled in Hurdle Flat and married Briget McEvoy from Co Mayo.Their they mined and raised a family of five children My grandfather John (Jack) the fourth child. Members of the family still reside in Beechworth today.
Jack was born in 1876 and in 1912 married May Lillian Chapman Trigloan a school teacher. May was the daughter of Thomas Trigloan and Elizabeth Reader and the second youngest of 17 children. Her grandfather William Trigloan was a convict who was transported to the colonies 1816 and given a ticket of leave in 1825.William was from Cornwell.
The Scanlan name appears to have been originally spelt Scanlon but occassionally Scanlen and even Scantlin. The American arm of the family adopted the "on" version , but my great grandfather spelt his name with an "an"
Any information would be helpful and I am also willing to share my information and resources.
