He married (1) Maria Elizabeth DAVIS on Bef. 1774 in Dover Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania. He married (2) Catherine SCHALLUS on 10 January 1797 in Berlin, Brothersvalley Twp., Somerset Co., Pennsylvania.

Lebanon was formed in 1816 from part of Lancaster Co. Ludwig was on the tax list of Dover Twp.,York Co. PA in 1779. He was on the 1783-1784 assessment list for Brothersvalley Twp., Bedford Co.,PA. He is shown on pg 248 of the 1790 census for Bedford Co., PA. It was recorded that he had 1 horse, 1 cow, 1 house and 6 in the family. In 1793 Ludwig bought 295 acres of the waters of Blue Lick Creek called Rich Hill in Brothersvalley Twp.,Bedford Co. Ludwig patented the land on 18 Dec 1802 by Commonwealth of PA (Patent Book 48, page 190). Ludwig was on the tax list for Brothersvalley Twp in 1796. Somerset Co. was formed from part of Bedford Co., PA in 1796. Ludwig was listed in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census for Brothersvalley Twp., Somerset Co., PA. See land patent 18 Dec 1802, Book 48, page 190. Ludwig owned and operated farms, a tannery and distillery. He was a Whig and member of the Lutheran Church. He first belonged to the Berlin Lutheran Church and later he was a member of the Pine Hill Lutheran Church. Ludwig died intestate, see Orphans Court petitions dated 30 May 1823 and Aug 1824. Page 141 of Vol 2 of History of Bedford and Somerset Co. The "Annals of Southwestern Pennsylvania" page 568 state that Ludwig is buried in the Pine Hill Lutheran Church church yard. A 1798 tax list for Brothersvalley and Elk Lick twps, Somerset Co., assessed some of the housed in those areas. These were apparently the better-built homes and Ludwigs house was included. He was assessed for a 1,1/2 story log house that measured 22 x 28 feet, The house had three windows with a total of 33 windowpanes. Ludwig likely died on Feb 29 or earlier in 1820, for the administration bond for his estate was dated Feb 29, 1820. At the time of his death, he owned three tracts in Somerset County: his homeplace in Brothersvalley twp (about 300 acres); another property of about 300 acres in Alleghany twp; and a tract of land in Turkeyfoot twp. His personal estate, in addition to his land, amounted to the considerable sum of $2140.32 1/2; part of this was $686.93 1/2 in personal bonds that were owed to him.
