DEATHS

________

Josiah Allshouse.

Josiah Allshouse, of West Pittsburg[h]

street, Greensburg, died rather un-

expectedly at 5:20 a.m. today, and his

sudden death has cast a gloom over the

community in which he was so well

known. For nearly a year and a half

he had been ailing, having suffered

several strokes, the last of which on

Saturday night, resulted in his death.

Mr. Allshouse was a native of North

Huntingdon township, was born at

what was for many years known as the

Old Allshouse homestead, several miles

west of Adamsburg, and afterwards

owned and lived on a farm in Hemp-

field township near the place of his

birth. Twenty one years ago he came

to Greensburg and embarked in the

hardware and farm implement busi-

ness on North Pennsylvania in the

Allshouse block which was erected at

that time by him. After being in that

business for over five years he sold out,

and since that time had been in the

contracting business. During the past

fifteen or sixteen years he did con-

siderable stone work and street paving

in Greensburg, Jeannette, Irwin, Mount

Pleasant and elsewhere. He together

with the late George W. Good also

had the contract for the grading and

building of the local street car line

from Greensburg to Jeannette.

In politics Mr. Allshouse was a Dem-

ocrat and while a resident of Hemp-

field township served acceptably for

years as a school director and was

always progressive in public matters

of every kind. He, for years, was an

active member of the Lutheran church,

the old stone church, at Brush Creek,

near Adamsburg, and when he moved

to Greensburg transferred his member-

ship to Zion Lutheran Church, South

Pennsylvania avenue, to which he be-

longed to his death. When in good

health he was a regular attendant of

his church.

While in health, Mr. Allshouse was

a familiar figure upon Greensburg

streets and had a large circle of ac-

quaintances all over the county, and

more especially in Greensburg, Hemp-

field and North Huntingdon townships

where he was, perhaps, most favorably

known.

Mr. Allshouse was married to Cath-

arine E. Beck, daughter of the late

'Squire Leonard Beck of near Madison,

Hempfield township. He was the father

of eight children, one of whom, a son,

died years ago in infancy. The sur-

viving members of the family besides

his wife are: S. Leonard, Harry J.,

Robert R., Kenneth and Miss Sara I.

of Greensburg; Morris N. of Houston,

Texas, and Mrs. Robert Rams[a]y of

Byrnedale, Elk county, Pa.

Funeral services to be at the late

home at 1:30 o'clock, Monday after-

noon, May 22. Interment at Brush

Creek cemetery.

From an unnamed Mt. Pleasant, PA. paper:

Josiah Allshouse.

Josiah Allshouse, the well known

Greensburg contractor, died Friday after

a long illness of paralysis, aged 61 years.

Five sons and two daughters survive

with their mother. Mr. Allshouse

will be remembered by many Mount Pleasant

people as it was he who put down the

Main street pavement here, one of the

best jobs of the kind in this end of the

state.
