GEORGE FAMILY STORIES
From: Marilyn (George) Wahle <Mlwahle1@aol.com>      Date: Sat, 27 Apr 2002 12:38:30 EDT

Does Jerry remember getting sick on Grandpa's Kentucky Club pipe tobacco? Jerry may have been about 10 or 12 years old. We would take Grandpa with us to town - he smoked in the car. I vaguely remember the car being so smoky. I think Grandpa was getting senile as he tried to shut the car door with his foot on the ground but figured out why the door wouldn't shut.

I have many memories of Grandpa and Grandma's little house. They had a wooden box slightly underground outside on the North side of the house where Grandma kept butter cool. They also had an icebox in the kitchen. I loved Grandma's brown sugar and butter sandwiches, it sounds weird, I wouldn't eat brown sugar sandwiches now. Grandma canned beef, chicken and I remember her green pears. She used food coloring to make the pears green. The pears were good but I kiddingly called them poison. They had a wood cook stove with a bun warmer on top, also a small 2-3 burner kerosene cook stove. I think your Dad was very little when he drank kerosene from a container near the stove. Grandpa and Grandma had everyone over for a family gathering.

I don't know how Grandpa and Grandma got all the relatives in the little house for family gatherings - Carl and Grace, Dale and Vida, Opal and Juanita, Jay and Ida, my parents and all the cousins. Grandma died in 1944 before Janice was born so there would have been at least 1-3 cousins in each family.

I remember staying over night at their house. I slept on the horse hair brown couch and Grandma put two overstuffed horse hair chairs together for Carol's bed. I used to sleep walk frequently, I remember waking up outside dragging my blanket on a moonlit night. (I don't recall if I walked through chicken manure - they had chickens that pooped all over the yard.) I was calling my Dad and other men to come in for supper as they had been threshing that day. Grandma heard me come in the house and asked who it was. She told me to go back to bed.

I remember a peddler coming to their house, he was selling his wares in a big pack on his back. I don't recall what he was selling, he opened the pack in the kitchen.

Grandpa used to listen to daytime soaps and baseball games on the radio while he and I played Chinese Checkers. I think that is why I'm considered the Champion Chinese Checker player in my family. Milt Utter used to get so mad as I would always beat him and he refused to play with me.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for your letter and copy of the naturalization papers for Charles R. George. I don't think Grandpa Carl Reinhard George changed his name to Charles, although some people may have called him Charlie. I don't think the papers you sent are for our Grandpa George.

Ruth Wilhelm, Putnam County District Library, Ottawa, Ohio sent a letter 19 May 1998 indicating she could not find naturalization papers for Carl R. George. "The only Naturalization record I found, dated 19 Dec 1899, was for a Charles R. George but it shows him born 7 Feb 1875 instead of 1874. Also it lists on his marriage license that his parents were William and Christina George."

Ms. Wilhelm sent a copy of a Marriage Certificate 23 April 1902 for Charles George (age 27) and Maude Cook (age 16), residence Belmore, Ohio, parents William George and Christina Young George. John H. George signed as Maude Cook was under age, consent was given to the marriage.

My notes from the 1900 census Putnam County, Van Buren Twp., Belmore, OH listed the following persons:
John H. George, b March 1834 Germany, farmer
Mary M? George, b Jan 1834 Ohio (wife)
William Cook, b 1837 Ohio (son-in-law)
Lizzie Cook, b May 1835 Ohio (wife of William)
Maude Cook, b June 1884 Ohio (granddaughter of John)
Lizzie George, b March 1879 Germany (niece of John)
Charles George, b March 1874 Germany (nephew of John), farm laborer, came
to US 1891 (Grandpa Carl George came to US 23 April 1892.)

Henry County Probate Court, Napoleon, OH could not find a naturalization record for Carl Reinhard George. Henry Co. Probate Court sent a copy of naturalization for John George (great grandfather Johannes Heinrich Georg), came to the US 23 April 1892 from Germany, Sworn before the Probate Judge were M. Donnelly and William Franz, dated 15 Aug 1899. Great Grandfather John Henry George became a naturalized citizen 15 Aug 1899. Marilyn received his naturalization papers from Henry County Probate Court, Ohio.

Cheryl:
I'll send a copy of great grandfather John George's naturalization papers to you.

Love, Marilyn

Obituary - Owosso Argus Press?: "Carl Reinard George. ELSIE - Carl Reinard George, 76, died Thursday at te Blodgett General Hospital, Grand Rapids following an illness of two days. Funeral services will be held at the Oak Grove church, east of CHapin, on Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Marion Roberts officiating. The body will reest at teh Carter Funeral Home, Elsie, and burial will be a the RIdge Road Cemetery. He was born in Germany February 7, 1874 to John adn WIlhelmina George and came to the United States at teh age of 18, settling in Ohio. He was married to Ella M. Woodruff on August 21, 1902 at Belmore, Ohio. The couple moved tothe Chapin area in 1907. His wife died in 1944. Surviving are four sons, Floyd and Carl of Chapin, Dale of Elsie, and Opal of Flint, a daughter, Ida, of Lansing; a brother, four sisters, 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren."

Carl had a growth in his throat which grew so large he couldn't even swallow soup or water. He had surgery to remove the growth adn it grew back. He was hospitalized a second time to remove teh growth. I think Ida siad he died from a bloood clot after surgery.

Judy Eldridge sent Marilyn a copy of the obit. Not sure which newspaper, possibly Owosso Argus Press. However, when Marilyn wrote to the newspaper she was told that she would have to go to the Owosso Public Library to get obituary information. THe Argus Press was teh closest newspaper. (Note spelling of Reinard in obit compared to Reinhard in Bible).

Not sure if Smith Funeral Homes can help - Smith Funeral Homes Inc - 221 E. Main St., Elsie, MI 48831. They had a fire and lost many records. Funeral services for the George family had always been at Smith Funeral Home. Carter Funeral Home name was changed to Smith-Carter adn now is Smither Funeral Homes Inc. Marilyn stopped by the funeral home years ago to get her mother's SS#. Mrs. Smith said some of their records were lost in a fire, but they had her mother's SS#.

Marilyn doesn't think that Carl changed his name to Charles, although some people called his Charlie.

Henry County libraian and Probate Court cannot find that Grandpa Carl Reinhad George ever became a citizen. (Aunt IDa thought he became a citizen). Marilyn previously wrote teh State Archives of Michigan. There as 'no entry for Carl R. Geoge in teh naturalization index of Saginaw County. Lack of stadd prevents us from doing further research.' The State Archives are located at 717 W. Allegan, Lansing, MI 48918. Carl Reinhard George, DOB 7 Feb 1871, Niederosbach, Hesse, Germany.

Notes for Ella Mae Woodruff:
* Buried Ridge Road Cemetery, Brady Township, Saginaw County, Michigan
* Middle name may be spelled May.
- Ancestry.com Family Tree: Ancestors of Jennifer & Adam Fisher, Susan Fisher <susan917@mchsi.com>, Updated 26 Aug 2003. Ella Woodruff (Female). Father: Elliot Cester Woodruff, b. 23 Nov 1857 in Putnam County, Ohio; Mother: Ida Larkin

She was a Baptist. On 10 Sep 1910 they lived in Chapin Township, Saginaw County, MI. She was a housewife. She had diabetes, but was never seen doing insulin shots. Her granddaughter Marilyn remembered seeing her grab a candy bar in a store in Elsie as she apparently needed something to eat to counteract teh insulin. She died in her sleep t age 61. Marilyn also vaguely remembers her coffin in the corner of their living room. The funerla services wre at United Brethren church on teh Ridge Road east of Chapin.

SHe played the piano and taught Sunday School at teh UB church. Marilyn's father used the excuse that he had to go to church every Sunday, adn that was why he never went with his family except for special occasions such as programs. The UB church had suppers on Friday nights adn they served oyster stew (oysters in milk).

Ella's middle name has also been seen spelled May. The Americanized version of Karl's name is usually seen as Carl Reinhard George. Although some people may have called Karl by the name Charlie, he never changed his name to Charles. They lived in Chapin, Michigan on 21 June 1932. Ella was buried Ridge Road Cemetery, Brady Township, Saginaw County, Michigan (gravestone).

Obituary: "Mrs. Ella George. Ella May George, daughter of Elliot C. and Ida J. Woodruff, was born in Putnam County, Ohio, May 7, 1883 and passed away at home May 27, 1944, at the age of 61 years and 3 weeks. She was united in marriage to Carl R. George of Belmore, Ohio, August 21, 1902. They moved to Michigan in 1907 and have since resided at their farm near Chapin. She has been a member of the United Brethren Church since the age of 15 years. During her entire life of that membership she has taken an active part in the work of the Church. But in her recent years of declining health has used her radio for her Churhc service. She was a loving wife and mother, with a kidn disposition and a ready smile, and lived a life of devotion to her home, neighborhood and friends. She leaves to mourn their loss her husband: five children, Carl and FLoyd of Chapin, Dale of Elsie, Opal of FLint and Ida of Lansing. One daughter, Leona Irene, died in infancy.
