James Beckett (b. September 12, 1762, d. May 01, 1812)
James Beckett (son of John Beckett) was born September 12, 1762 in Ireland, and died May 01, 1812 in Maybe South Carolina. He married Margaret Kyle on July 10, 1782 in Ireland.
Notes for James Beckett: But the grandfather of this sketch, James Beckett, did not tarry long at Charlestown; he soon acquired one or more plots of land in the vicinity of the Capitol, Columbia, in Fairfield County, on the waters of Little River, on Shirley's Branch in Camden District, May 25., 1789, established his homestead (Bundle 11, plat 15) there with probably a summer home at the popular local spa of Rice Creek Springs nearby where he died May 1, 1812, age only 50. He left no Will; on application, Thomas Lindsay and Margaret Beckett were appointed administrators by the Richland County District Court and disposed of his meager personal belongings, recorded in Book F, page 64, May 10, 1812, and Book E, pp. 260 & 261; also his debts, among them these items mind you: To cash paid Jno Parr his bill making cof fin, etc. , $9.00; burial charges $12.00; Messrs. Davis & Percival's bill for attendance at last illness, $97.75. Thus it appears of record that James Beckett was sick awhile, died, and was buried ashore although his grave has not yet been located, probably at nearby Lebanon where there was a church and a college, for both of which his son James McKinney then only seven years old, the father of R. C. Beckett, in course of time became trustee of record, his initial officiation.
This explanation of deceased was made necessary because Mr. Dunbar Rowland usually a careful annalyst was misled into saying, "The grandfather, James Beckett, attempted to return to Ireland and was lost in a storm", Mississippi (Supplemental) Vol. IV, page 32.
