TAPS FOR ANOTHER VETERAN: J.G.Fiester passes away at his homein Sumner last Thursday night after long illness.
While the death of J.G.Fiester was not unexpected, the news cameas a shock last Friday morning when word was passed around that he hadsuccumbed the night previous. His was the second death to take fromthe community within a week one of the rapidly thinning ranks of theCivil War veterans. Mr.Fiester, in feeble health for years, had beenconfined to his bed for weeks, and in spite of all that loving carecould do for him, the frailities of the human body gradually becamemore manifest until he was finally carried to the Great Beyond.
The death of Mr.Fiester came at a ripe old age, attained by fewand brought to a close an honorable life. He has been a resident ofSumner for more than forty years and during that time by his genialdisposition and genuine desire to be of help to his fellowmen, hasmade a host of friends.
That he too was imbued with the spirit of patriotism is manifestby the fact that when he responded to the call for volunteers duringthe Civil War when he had barely passed his seventeenth birthday, andthat he served throughout the war with credit to himself and with anhonorable discharge at its close.
Mr. Fiester was long a member of Lookout Lodge no.395, A.F.& A.M.in which organization he took active interest until the infirmities ofold age prevented his regular attendance.
James Grove Fiester was born in Williamsport, PA, April 8th 1846and passed to his reward on June 13th, 1924 aged 78 years, 2 months,and 5 days.
On December 28, 1869 he was united in marriage to Elena Hebe ofWilliamsport, PA. To this union were born Henry S., BenjaminFranklin, James Russell, and Oliver Elliot. Oliver and Benjaminsurvive, the others having preceeded their father in death.
In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Fiester moved to Independence, IA residingthere for one year. They then moved to Fremont Township, FayetteCounty, Iowa, where they made their home for nine years; and then cameto Sumner, Iowa where they have since resided.
On the 27th of June 1863, Mr. Fiester enlisted in Company C, 37thRegiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, Militia. On July 11th, 1864 here-enlisted in Company A, 194th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers,Infantry. From each of these engagements he received an honorabledischarge.
Mr. Fiester was a member of the Methodist Church of Sumner and ofthe local G.A.R.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, one brotherR.B.Fiester, of Independence, Iowa, one half-brother S.F.Fiester ofWashington, D.C., two half-sisters in Waverly, New York, ninegrandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in the yard of the Fiester home onSunday afternoon where members of the Lookout Lodge, the G.A.R., andthe Thomas E.Woods Post of the American Legion attended in a bodytogether with old friends and neighbors of the deceased. The funeralsermon was delivered by Rev. W.H.Mitchell who also rendered two vocalsolos. Flowers were many and beautiful.
Interment was made in Union Grove Cemetary where the impressiveMasonic burial services were conducted by his fellow lodge members incharge of Mr.E.E.Reed of Monticello, IA. The services were conductedby the firing squad from the American Legion and the Post Bugler.

Be it resolved, that in the death of Brother J.G.Fiester, LookoutLodge, No.395, A.F.&A.M. has sustained the loss of a worthy brother.
Be it also resolved that we extend to his bereaved family our deepsympathy and what comfort we can.
Be it further resolved that these resolutions be published in theSumner Gazette, spread upon the records of this lodge, and a copy sentto the bereaved widow.

Note: Cemetery Name has changed from Union Grove Cemetery to UnionMound Cemetery.
Union Grove Cemetery was formed in 1892 as a private cemetery with thepurpose of providing burial grounds closer in town. Its care changedhands several times over the years, with the name changing to UnionMound sometime before 1933. Cemetery was deeded to the city of Sumnerin 1964.

Location: West on Route 93, (through town is called First Street),take a right onto Union Street, cemetery is about two blocks on theleft.
