Captain Theophilus Baldwin Jr. came to New Milford in 1716 or 1717 andmarried Jerusha Beecher, June 5, 1722. He died May 1, 1745. Hiswidow married Nathaniel Bostwick and third, David Noble. TheophilusBaldwin Jr. was captain of the trainband (town militia) and a memberof the General Assembly seven sessions. He resided at what is now(1880) Park Lane

Daniel Boardman in 1729 in consideration of 300 good chestnut railssold to Theophilus Baldwin one half of a meadow lot in Mount TomMeadow. Mount Tom Meadow was the swampy land that was divided intomeadow lots in the early dividion of land on the east side of MountTom.

Along with 26 others Theophilus Baldwin gave a 1 acre parcel of landto James Hine that he might become their smith for a term of 4 years.

Captain Theophilus Baldwin came from Milford, and settled in NewMilford in or before the year 1717; a single man, and married JerushaBeecher in 1722. His first land was laid to him in 1715 on AspetuckHill, which he probably sold soon after, and his second - a home lotand ten acres - was laid on both sides of Poplar highway, boundedsouth by Jonathan Buck, and north by James Prime, which he sold toHezekiah and Ebenezer Baldwin; it being not far from the present ParkLane school house. His first 40 acres are said to have been laid outin 1713 in Chestnut woods, northeasterly from the town plat. Heresided, probably, in the vicinity of Poplar swamp, east side of thestreet, until his early death, May 1, 1745 in his 51st years. When thesecond military company was organized by the town, Theophilus Baldwinwas appointed captain of the first company, in October, 1738, and atthe same time Joseph Bostwick was appointed lieutenant, and SamuelCanfield ensign; and the boundary-line between the two companies wasan east and west line across the town at the meeting house. Hence,after this date, for many years the two sections of the town wereknown by the terms "North End" and "South End" and the term "NorthFarms" represented the farmers north of Poplar swamp, up to and abovewhat is now Northville; and "South Farms" represented those on theplain below what is now Lanesville, or in the vicinity of GallowsHill, but soon after it included those at the Iron Works.

Town Militia: For several years, till the year 1744, there was butone military company in the town - which was formed and organizedsomewhere between the years 1715 and 1720. The officers were asfollows: Captain Stephen Noble (served 20 years), Lieut.John Bostwick,Ens.William Gaylord, Capt.Theophilus Baldwin, Lieut.Joseph Bostwick,Ens.Samuel Canfield. (The second set of officers were appointed in1738).

May 14, 1719 - Petition was made by 23 families of New Milford - oneof those being that of Theophilus Baldwin - to the Governour ofConnecticutt for permission to levy a tax on those holding town"Rights" but not residing there, that they might raise money to buildthe first meeting house.

The meeting house was built. July 11, 1729, it was voted that thereshould be a committee chosen to seat the meeting house, who shall seatpersons according to age, dignity, and estate; that all persons abovethe age of 55 years shall be seated according to their age, dignity,and list of estate, and Capt. Stephen Noble, Sergt.Theophilus Baldwin,...were chosen to seat the meeting house according to the directionsabove mentioned, and that it shall be done by the list of this presentyear.

Jonathan Buck one of the first settlers of the town, proposed toestablish himself as a cooper in the town upon conditions that he begiven certain land, money, or labor. Many contributed to him,including Theophilus Baldwin one acre of land.
