Truman Grove Beecher (son of Almon Beecher and Hannah Baldwin)67, 68 was born 21 May 1831 in Hinesburg, Chittenden Co., VT, and died 28 Mar 1888 in Beaver Dams, NY. He married Minerva Brisco69, daughter of Nathan Brisco and Clarissa B. VanGorder.

"The Truman G. Beecher family resides in Dix Township, Beaver Dams,Schuyler County, NY. He was one of the most worthy citizens of theGreen Mountain State furnished to NY. His birth occurred on the 21stday of May 1831 in Hinesburg, Chittenden County, Vermont and herepresented one of the old families of that state which was probablyestablished there in early colonial days. His father, Almon Beecher,was born in Hinesburg in 1806 and was reared in the place of hisnativity after which he married Hannah Baldwin and they became theparents of three children, Harmon, Jane S., and Truman G.

A common-school education prepared Truman G. Beecher for the practicaland responsible duties of a business career. He continued his studiesuntil 18 years of age and then started out in life for himself. Hehad been a resident of Schuyler County since 1835. Here he followedfarming to a considerable extent and also engaged in speculating land.He was a man of good business ability, resourceful and enterprisingand his keen discernment enabled him to so place his investments thathe accumulated a good property. The farm which his widow now owns ispleasantly located in Beaver Dams. It has come very productive underher care and supervision and constitutes one of the most valuabletracts of land in that portion of the county.

As companion and helpmate for lifes journey, Truman Beecher chose MissMinerva Brisco, their marriage celebrated on the 29th of September,1858. T he lady is the daughter of Nathan and Clarissa (Van Gorder)Brisco. Her father was born in Connecticut, September 24, 1796, and onthe first of January 1824, married Clarissa Van Gorder. They becamethe parents of Roxanna, Isaac, Clarissa, Charlotte, Minerva, Matilda,and Rowena.

Mr. and Mrs. Beecher have five children. (1) Elmer L. Beecher wasmarried in Beaver Dams, DEcember 10, 1882 to Miss Libbie Russell whodied in 1897 and since he married Ella Russell. They live inSchenectady, NY. (2) Mark A. Beecher married Loretta Terwilliger andthey also live in Schenectady with two children, Err T. and FlorenceN. (3) Nathan J. the third member of the family is deceased. (4)Clara Jane is living at home with her mother in Beaver Dams. (5) FloraEmiline, wife of W.H.Curtis resides in NY City.

Mr. Beecher died March 28, 1888. His religious faith was in harmonywith the Universalist Church. His political support was to theRepublican Party and he earnestly endoresed its principles. He gainedwide acquaintance among the best class of citizens who entertained forhim the warmest of regards."

Truman was in business with his father selling farm machinery and lifeinsurance. He bought and sold land and handled estates. He ownedproperty near Chambers, Post Creek, and Catlin.

Truman built the barn that was next to Red & White Store in BeaverDams and had a blacksmith shop in it. He moved the Grange Hall fromTownsend to where it is now and started the Grange.

"Funeral services of Truman G. Beecher were conducted at the M.E.Church March 30. He was 56 years old and had lived at Beaver Damssome 40 years having come to this place from Vermont. He leaves awife and 5 children."

Masonic Lodge Membership: Truman was a charter member of the MasonicLodge in Millport, NY #253. Record was found of his membership,chartered in 1864, listing his occupation as farmer, age 35. He wasdropped from the rolls in December of 1885. This lodge has beendissolved and joined with the Horseheads Old Oak Lodge in much lateryears. The original lodge building is still located in Millport,currently a church (Go across the bridge in Millport, and bear to theright).
