| Although there will be many branches in this family tree, our roots, so far, begin with the births of Barnabus [Bamadas] Bechler in 1835 [1829] in Manheem, Germany, and Theresia Trickel in 1839 in Karlsruhe, Baden. In 1867, Barnabus, 32, a farmer, emigrated to America aboard the ship Atalanta from Le Havre, France, arriving in New York on November 2, 1867. [GERMANS IN AMERICA]. From there he travels to Indiana, where pehaps Theresia Trickel is waiting. Theresia was born in Karlsruhe, Baden-Wurttemberg. There have been impediments to their marriage, perhaps social status or religion, but on July 14, 1868, in Coal City, Illinois, they are finally married before a justice of the peace. Barnabas is 32; Theresia is 29. Of the five children born to these two, only three children survive: Caroline, Joseph, & Christian. In 1886, Barnabus dies of a snake bite while clearing land on his farm near Coal City. After Barnabus dies, Theresia marries Chris Wise. The marriage is of short duration; no public record has been found. She may have retained the Begler name. Theresia dies on May 9, 1922, in Morris, Illinois. The second branch of the tree is the Cairns family. Although the Cairns family emigrated from Scotland to America, Andrew Henry's nationality may have been Irish rather than Scottish, and his family may have emigrated from Ireland to Scotland [1845-1851], as did so many others, to avoid the perils or the Potato Famine. Little is known about this side of the family except that Henry and Ellen with their young children emigrated to America c. 1880. Andrew Henry [Henry Andrew] was born c. 1850 in Ireland [or Scotland], and died c. 1893 in Coal City, Illinois, cause unknown. Ellen Cairns was born in August 1854 in Scotland and died c. 1920. At least seven children were born to this family: Ellen, Jennie, Mary, Michael, John, Andrew, Henrietta. I started researching these two families almost five years ago, but I have only scratched the surface. The Cairns family remains an enigma, as do all those who preceded Theresia and Barnabas in Baden. Hopefully this family web site will generate participation from others who will uncover additional pieces of the puzzle and who may provide suggestions for future search. |
