Notes for J
AMES CALVIN ATKINSON:
His wife died when Etta was just 2 or 3 years old.
Mom remembers Calvin as a very handsome man and flashing blue eyes. He was very pleasant and loved his children. He used to make knives. He made them out of discarded metal files and the handles were red. Mom thought it was red obsidian. The only wedding present mom and dad got when they got married in 1938 was the 2 knives that Calvin gave them. They have been lost over the years.

Notes for M
ELENDA E. SMITH:
Melinda died when Etta was 3 or 4 years old in abt. 1891. It is said that she was a daughter of Joseph M. Smith, the Morman leader in the 1850's. Many people who are of the surname Smith make this claim, so I am trying to find some facts to base it on.
I have researched the Morman records of the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints and found the following information and am working on learning more from it.
Melinda was first found on Early membership roll # 295 of Mill Creek Branch, Iowa, line18. Above her name is the names of John D. Tarrant, born Dec. 26, 1830 in Wiltshire, England, and Emma Tarrant, born May 4, 1821 in Sufflok, England. They were both baptized on April 15, 1877 in Rockport, Atchison, Missouri as was Melinda, and also spelled Malinda on page 95 of Riverton, Fremont Co. Iowa microfilm, line 43. Although Melinda was baptized in 1878. The 3 of them transfered to Riverton membership from Millcreek and received on May 3, 1885. John and Emma died, expelled or were removed in Portland, Oregon on Nov. 29, 1903. I would say they were removed or expelled since the date is the same for both of them. I don't know if there is any relation between the three of them.
It looks like Mill Creek Branch was disorganized on May 31, 1885 and organized with Hamburg and called Union Branch, then on the next microfilm roll, I forgot to write down the number, Union Branch is crossed out and called Riverton Branch. So all this happened in Fremont county, Iowa after they left Rockport, Missouri since that is where they were baptized. So in 1885 they were in Iowa.
Did Melinda know Calvin from being in Missouri Branch and being baptized there? Did she go back to marry him sometime after the reorganization of the Iowa Branch?
More notes to consider....1790 Virginia Census Benjamin Tarrants with 10 souls in Pittsylvania County, 1 dwelling and 4 others. Sarah Standly married Joel Atkinson in Pittsylvania in 1800 and that was 10 years after this census. Pitching a long shot, could this Tarrants have any connection with the Tarrants on the morman roll from England in 1877?

  Notes for JAMES MARK ATKINSON:
Mark dissappeared about the age of 12 and was feared kidnapped. It seems he ran away and was found years later in Willow, Arkansas. It was about the time that his father remarried after his mother's death. He was not happy with the new mother. She was only 26, much younger than his real mother. His father was 47 at that time. This story related to me by Byron Atkinson. In 1900 Caldwell County, Missouri Census, he is working as a farm laborer on the William Sackman farm.

She married JOHN CALDWELL SOWDER20 1875 in Monticello, Wayne Cou;nty, Kentucky21, son of THOMAS SOWDER and SINAH MORGAN. He was born April 25, 1853 in Wayne County, Kentucky22,23,24, and died April 08, 1927 in Hamilton, Caldwell County, Missouri25,26.

Notes for N
ANCY ELLEN ATKINSON:
Nancy Atkinson is mom's grandmother on her dad's side of the family and Etta Atkinson is her grandmother on her moms side of the family. Interesting fact is that they were not only sister in law's, but Etta was Nancy's niece because Etta's dad was Nancy's brother, James Kalvin Atkinson. There was an age difference of about 32 years in the sets of grandparents. It must have been interesting to hear the different points of view as the families raised the children with help from their grandparents. Uncle Junior said that Nancy was very stern, actually he said that she was real mean. My mom does not remember her that way though. Uncle Junior also said she smoked a corn cob pipe.

Notes for J
OHN CALDWELL SOWDER:
I am not sure exactly when the spelling of Sowder changed to Souders, but after they appeared in Missouri I haven't seen the Sowder spelling in our family.
Mom has vivid memory of grandpa Souders death. She was there, age 6, and saw him fall against the wood stove with a stroke. The death certificate of John says birth on April 25, 1853 and his birth record in Wayne County, Ky says Mar 14, 1854. April 25th date is correct.
On the census records, John is listed as John A. C. Sowder. Found some Kentucky Land Grants in Pulaski County, Kentucky for A.C. Sowder in 1880 in Brush Creek and 1881 in Sinking Valley and Brush Creek. Also found one for John Sowder in Rockcastle County in 1871, Dry Valley Skeggs Creek. I don't know what the A.C. stands for. I have never seen those initials anywhere else since that time.
John married Nancy Atkinson, whose family was Mormon. I have not heard if the Sowder were Morman yet, but from Kentucky, they moved to Caldwell county, Missouri, which at that time was established as a Morman county. The Mormans were eventually forced out of the area, many of them were killed in what they call there, the Morman War. Since they stayed and farmed, I am assuming they were either not Morman or abandoned that faith or joined the Reorganized branch. I have found a few Souders in the RLDS records there but not John. Mom has vivid memory of grandpa Souders death. She was there, age 6, and saw him fall against the hot stove with a stroke. He lived in Cowgill, Missouri.
