Notes for MANUEL HERMAN BEHNE: Edward Behne, age 20 and Manuel Behne, age 16, along with their brother, Joe, 14 and Uncle John Bernsen went by wagon and muleteam to Elm Creek in Milam Co, to fish because it had been raining and there was no farm work to do. It started raining during the night. They were camped between two creek beds, and they were cut off due to rising water. Each found a tree to get into. The water came down in walls higher and higher, broke the train trussel that supported the bridge, along with the bridge. The bridge and trussel flowed so swiftly with the high water that it broke the trees the boys were in. Manuel was the only survivor. The body of Joe was never found. |
