The Family Tree was compiled by Helen Bekhor of Melbourne Australia, and we are all indebted to her for her tireless efforts and years of hard work in collecting this information. The tree numbers in excess of 3,500 names and dates back to the early 1600's with Sadkah Husein who was born in Aleppo, Syria. Following a cholera epidemic in Iraq, and the loss of most of the leading members of the Baghdadi Jewish community, Sadkah Husein was elected for the Chief Rabbinate in Baghdad. His decendents eventually migrated to all parts of the world with a great number settling in Israel.
Regarding the spelling of "Husein", there are different opinions on the spelling, Helen Bekhor took the spelling that David Solomon Sassoon used in his book "History of the Jews of Baghdad" as that was the very first place where she read about our ancestor. In the Encyclopedia Judaica in the section on Baghdad the Rabbi is mentioned as "Zedaka Hozin" and elsewhere the surname was even seen as "Hutsin". Jamil Bekhor of Pennsylvania says that the name is a term of endearment for a horse in Arabic, and therefore it is pronounced as "Hseyin".
Any information or updates would be appreciated, and may be sent to myself (ebekhor@att.net) or Helen Bekhor (helenbekhor@bigpond.com). The family tree can be viewed by clicking on the "InterneTree" below.
