Pioneer postmaster, justice of the peace, physician, dentist, mortician, and miller, Wiliam Jackson Furry was all of these and more. It is said that he delivered over 400 babies in his life. Over six feet tall with black eyes, hair, and beard he was said to be congenial, mild-tempered, kind, and very likable. His formal education was limited. However, he studied by correspondence and sef-tutoring. It was said he lived with books. At age 18, 1864, he enlisted in the Union Army. His father joined the south at about the same time. William was taken prisoner and spent the rest of the war in the Andersonville prison. He was one of the few to survive. At the end of the war, he returned home as did his father. In 1872, he married Nancy Mee of Chattanooga. Bill and Nancy came by train to Salem in 1880. They eventually moved to Short Bend, Mo. where he became the postmaster. Lewis and Eddie were born here. Nancy died about 1888 and several years later William married Josephine Tieffeur (Gann) and raised a second family.

William also became a doctor for the Short Bend area. He was also a mortician, belonged to the Methodist church and was a justice of the peace. He was also a miller grinding grain.
