Notes for WALCHER OF LOTHARINGO:
A man of noble birth who was brought from the provence of Lorraine in 1072 AD by William the Conqueror. He was created first Norman Bishop of Durham in 1072. He later became Earl of Northumberland. He was murdered by a Saxon crowd at an Assembly in Gateshead in 1080.
Exerpt from the Anglo saxon Chronicle;
AD 1080. This yearwas Bishop Walker slain in Durham with an hundred men with him, French and Flemish. He himself was born in Lorrain. This did the Northumbrians in the month of May.
