SOUTHERN HISTORICAL FAMILIES by Boddie, Vol. XVI, Appendix V, pp.168-169

"Richard BENTLEY of Perquimans Precinct, Albemarle Co., N.C., who, judging by the ages of his children, was born ca 1635-40, and died in Perquimans Precinct in November or December, 1687, being murdered by one of his slaves, a negro boy named EXETER. His eldest son, John BENTLEY, reported the murder to the court in December 1687, and the jury immediately condemned the boy to be hanged (Parker, N.C. HIGHER COURT RECORDS, 1670-1696, P.373). Richard BENTLEY came to North Carolina about 1664-5 apparently, with his wife Jane and his two daughters, for his eldest son and heir, John BENTLEY, at the Febuary Court, 1693/4 after Richard's death, entered for the importation to the colony of Richard BENTLEY, Jean BENTLEY, Mary BENTLEY, Sarah BENTLEY, 2 negro slaves and an Indian boy - 7 rights in all (N.C. Colonial And State Records, Vol. I,p.394). The mention of the slaves and the Indian Boy makes it almost certain that Richard did not come diredtly from England to North Carolina and that he came into the colony from Virginia, confirming the idea that he was a son of William BENTLEY of Elizabeth City Co., Virginia."

Southern Historical Familes by Bodie, Apendix V. p. 171

Richard BENTLEY Sr's first wife, JANE, died prior to July 3, 1677, on which date he married (2) Lydia MANN (Hathaway, Vol III, P. 200). She was probably a sister of William MANN, who on Feb 20, 1724-5 deeded to John BARTLETT 120 acres in Perquimans Precinct that had been granted him for importing three persons into the colony May 1, 1694 (Winslow, op. cit., p. 88). By his second marriage, Richard BENTLEY, had at least one son, John. On Dec. 3, 1695 John BENTLEY, son of Richard BENTLEY decd., with the consent of Lede (Lydia) HARE, his mother, bound himself apprentice to Anthony DAWSON, carpenter, to learn the trade, for five years (Winslow, op.cit. p. 46); Perquimans Co., D. Bk. "A", p. 104). John would be 21 in 1700, so he was born probably about 1679. The above document was witnessed by John HARE, who was probably Lydia's second husband. Thus, Richard BENTLEY, by his second wife, Lydia MANN, had a son:

6. John Bentley, born ca 1679.

Hi All,

Has anyone established a relationship between Stephen Bently of Baltimore county MD with our Thomas (married to Hannah). The land Thomas bought in Frederick county Maryland was originally part of Baltimore Co. The information I have on Stephen is:

First shows up on 1678 Dorchester Md tax lists. Married to Anne Pearle (widow of William Pearle) in 1692 or thereabouts in Baltimore Co. (Carroll County is between Fredrick and Baltimore County)

Next shows up on:
1699 tax list Montgomery MD
1701 tax list Montgomery MD
1703 tax list Montgomery MD

Anyone have any information on him that could possibly link him to Thomas? Baltimore county and Montgomery county both border Frederick.

Also have a Richard Bently, supposedly given one of the first land grants in Maryland, approximately 1650. (Don't have my records here with me at the moment).

Teresa
