Looking for information about George W. Strickland born abt 1832 married to Sarah R. (could be Weaver), at least 8 children, including the names Henry D., Alexander, Lewellen (unclear on the spelling). Subdivision 55 Ellijay, Gilmer county, Georgia. Interested in the children, and the parents of George W. He can be found on the 1860, 1870, 1880 census' of this area.

George Washington Strickland, on the 1860 Gilmer Co Census, was born June 1832. His wife's name was Sarah. They had Henry D., Mary A., Alexander, Milly, Lucinda, Lewallen, Amanda E., and John. George W. and all his children were all born in GA. Sarah was born abt 1842 in NC. In the 1860 census an older woman, Mary, b 1800 in SC, was living with them.

I have info on Alexander. Does anyone know Geo. W.'s parents? Can you tell me something of his children? Do you know the maiden name of Sarah? Thank you for your help.

"Glad you brought up the tombstone, it brings to mind a story that I had forgotten but need to document. The present tombstone was placed by my Dad in the sixties or seventies. I do not remember whether the grave was previously unmarked or was marked with fieldstones. After it was erected by the supplier, the date went unnoticed for years until someone was visiting the grave, I believe it was Ruby, noticed the wrong death date. No one has been able to find the source of the error, whether the supplier inscribed it incorrectly, the order was written incorrectly, or whatever else could have happened. I have written to someone who was instrumental in buying the tombstone and in discovering the error. I’ll send you their reply when I get it. Anyway, according to my sister in conversation with Ruby, the death date of June 08, 1921 on the death certificate is correct.

LD’s application for Civil War pension, apparently in his own handwriting, dated April 14th, 1903 shows:

When and where born: Dec. 24, 1860 Union Co, now Fannin, Georgia
Enlistment when and where: 1861 Big Shanty or Camp McDonald, Georgia
Company and Regiment: Co, B, 23rd Georgia Volunteers
Rank: 4th Corporal
Wounded: June 1862, at battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, sounded in left breast below nipple breaking the rib. Also in Spring of 1863, James Island, S. C. while in line of duty was ruptured in left side.
Captured: at Deep Bottom, August 19, 1864; received at Point Lookout, Maryland, August 22, 1864 from City Point
Va and exchanged February 13, 1865.

I have copies of these records, if you desire I will try to scan (they are not of good quality) and send to you. They are also quite voluminous, twenty-six pages."

I am trying to find DESCENDANTS of Lewellen Decatur Strickland and Elizabeth Ann Pettit.
They were married in Gilmer Co, GA, Sept 1868. They had the following 11 children (spouses in parentheses): Cordelia "Delia" ( Coke Ellington, Arch Smith), Mary Jane (Charles H. Pritchett), Harriet R.(Columbus Bates), John Fletcher (Lillie R. Pritchett), William Joshua "Will" (Cathy Holden, Laura Hulsey),Sarah Verlula "Lulie" (William A. Holden), Melville Elijah "Mel" (Estelle Skelton), Alice L. (Robert Grenn), Lewis Olin died young, Linton Gay (Hattie Whiteside, Callie____)and Ernest Marvin (Mamie Lee Thatch). Looking for the parents of Lewallen Decatur "L.D." Strickland born Dec. 24, 1840 in Union Co., Georgia. Died June 8, 1921 in Gilmer, Co., Georgia. He married Elizabeth Ann Pettit on Sept. 17. 1868. She was born Jan. 21, 1851 in Gilmer, Co., Georgia, died Jan. 8, 1908 in Gilmer, Co., Georgia. Their children were:

[1] Cordelia Elvira Strickland born Aug. 1, 1868 died Jan. 11, 1939 she married 1st, Coke Asbury Ellington on Oct. 7, 1895. She then married Arch M. Smith on June 20, 1908.

[2] Mary Jane Strickland born Jan. 18, 1871 died Oct. 19, 1956. She married Charles Henry Pritchett on Jan. 11 1891.

[3] Harriet Rebecca Strickland born April 29, 1873 died Jan. 25, 1921 she married Columbus C. Bates on Nov. 31, 1897.

[4] John Fletcher Strickland born Aug. 23, 1875 died Feb. 21, 1918 he married Lillie Rebecca Pritchetton March 4, 1908.

[5] William Joshua Strickland born Feb. 18, 1878 died June 19, 1956 he married 1st Catherine Holden on Oct. 23, 1904, he then married Laura Hulsey on March 9, 1927.

[6] Melville Elijah Strickland born May 14, 1882 died Feb. 15, 1968 he married Estelle Elma Skelton on Sept. 15, 1912.
[7] Alice Lenora Strickland born March 20, 1884 died Aug. 2, 1960 she married Robert Dennis Green on Nov. 29, 1903. [8] Lewis Olin Strickland born April 19, 1888 died March 29, 1903.

[9] Linton Gay Strickland born May 12, 1893 died June 19, 1971 he married 1st Hattie Delcie Elizabeth Whiteside on Jan. 7, 1928, he then married Callie Walker Bradshaw on Nov. 27, 1943.
