Thomas S. Cocke (b. Abt. 1639, d. Bet. August 01, 1685 - 1697)
Notes for Thomas S. Cocke:
First wife name unknown.Had seven children.Second wife name was Margaret Wood Jones, the widow of Peter Jones.
House of Burgesses, 1677.
The list of children of Thomas Cocke, all by his first wife, as given in "Virginia Historical Collections," Volume V, p. 194, gives John.James Cocke Southall, following the genealogy published in "Virginia Historical Collections," also listed John.Later, however, he made a correction, saying that William, not John, should have been enumerated. In preparing the first volume of "Cockes and Cousins" the authors included John before they knew of the correction.Deletion of the name would have necessitated changing identification numbers of the four names following John's and the descendants of these people. The first inclination was to make the changes, but in an effort to make the numbers agree with those of W. Ronald Cocke and because the name of John was included in so many publications, the authors decided to retain it, even though they had found no concrete evidence that he existed. The will of Thomas Cocke does not mention John."Miscellaneous Cocke Notes" names him as 4th child, who died about 1697.Zelma Wells Price lists him as 6th child, born c.1673; d. 1696.She also enumberates mary (born c1669; d. Surry County, Virginia) as 4th child, who married, in Henrico County, John Brassieur.
Thomas, so far as extant records reveal, was the first child bearing the Cocke name to be born in Colonial Virginia.
The name of Thomas' first wife does not seem to appear in any authenticated record. In numerous compiled lineages, it is given as Margaret Wood Jones, daughter of Colonel Abraham Wood and widow of Peter Jones. She was the second wife of Thomsas Cocke, the wife who survived him and who is called "my loving wife Margarett Cocke" in his will. The will of Margaret Cocke, dated 12 August 1718 and proved in Henrico County, Virginia, May 1719,is evidence that she was not the mother of any of Thomas Cocke's children. She names two of her Jones' sons and several grandchildren, but does not mention any of Thomas Cocke's descednants.
Charles Hughes Hamlin, a descendant of Thomas Cocke and a certified genealogist, contends that Margaret was a step-daughter, not a daughter of Abraham Wood.By using the will of Abraham Wood as proof, he presents convincing argument to support his conclusions.
Thomas Cocke left Malvern Hill to his grandson Thomas Cocke by will probated in Henrico County 1697, with life tenure to his widow, Margaret Cocke.Grandson Thomas, who died unmarried, left his estate to his three brothers, Henry, James, and Brazure Cocke, Malvern Hill going to Brazure, the youngest.
