The 1860 census of Taylor County, IA. Page 81 shows Joseph Downing as HOH, 60, M, Farmer, no real estate, personal estate, $200, born in NY; Mary, 38, F, born in IN; John, 17, M, Farm Laborer, born in MO, attended school within the year; Christopher, 16, M, Farm Laborer, born in Mo, att. school; Page 82 continued family, Noah W., 14, M, MO, att. school; L., 12, F, MO, att. school; Benj., 9, M, Iowa, att. school (this pretty well narrows it down as to when they moved to Iowa); Sarah A. 8, F, Iowa, att. school; Cyntha, 6, F, Iowa; James R., 4, M, Iowa; and Nancy,1, F, Iowa. (George Downing)

Joe,
I copied page 6 of the Taylor County, Jackson Twp census also. It was taken July 1, 1870. The Downing children are listed as Donning, but I'm pretty sure it's the right family. Apparently Joseph died between 1863 and 1870 since the youngest child, Martha, is shown as 7, and Mary has remarried to George Herren. It reads as follows; line 18, dwelling 37, family #36, Herren, George, 34, M, W, Farmer, real estate $810, Pers. est. $350, born in Ohio, Month if married within the last year, Jan, cannot read, cannot write, male citizen 21 years and up; Mary, 44, F, W, Keeping House, born in Indiana, Mo. if marr. within last year, Jan, cannot read or write; Donning, Lomira, 19, F, W, at home, born in Missouri, cannot read or write; Donning, Benjamin F., 17, M, W, at home, Iowa, cannot read or write; Donning, Santa Ann, 16, F, W, at home, Iowa, cannot read or write; Donning, Syntha A., 15, F, W, at home, Iowa, cannot read or write; Donning, Nancy C., 10, F, W, at home, Iowa, cannot read or write; Donning, James R., 13, M, W, at home, Iowa, cannot read or write; Donning, Martha A., 7, F, W, at home, Iowa.
Some of the ages are not consistant as shown in 1860, but I think probably George Herren answered the
enumerator's questions and really didn't know the ages. Just gave something approximate.
I thought you might be interested in this, George Downing
