Notes for E
ASON ENNAS BAILEY:
Eason Ennas Bailey was born May 1839 in Greene County, North Carolina to Elcany and Charity Bailey. At age 12 he was living with his family in Greene Co, NC. At that time he had the following brothers & sisters: Cindy B. Bailey (born Abt 1840), William H. Bailey (born Abt 1842), Mary Bailey (born Abt 1843), Theophillia (son) Bailey (born Abt 1845), John T. Bailey (born Abt 1847) and Mary Jane Bailey (born Abt 1850). In 1860 he was living with another family in Saratoga, Wilson, NC. Their names were Hardy & Molly Kinnen. He was 21 and listed as a farm laborer. The value of his real estate at that time was $400 and his personal estate was $40. He enlisted in the Civil War in Wayne County, NC and was a private in Co. H 9th Reg NCST (1st Reg NC Calvary) on June 29, 1861 and was discharged at Kinston, NC on May 19, 1862 by reason of "a completely broken down constitution" because of "his having had measles, mumps, typhoid fever and dysentery." He married Susan A. Daughtrey of Southampton County, VA on February 25, 1864. She either died and he remarried by January 16, 1879 (Sarah E. Daughtrey) and then a third wife, Safronia Whitley, he married in April 1885. He had a total of 13 children with his three wives. His first child, Alice V., was born in VA and then the next four (James, Frank, John, & Eason) were born in NC. After that the last eight were born in VA (Henry, Lucretta, Eleana, B.S., Sinderella, Charlie, Joe & Paul). We found him in 1900 living in Newsoms, VA with Safronia, Joe and Paul. The last time we found him was in 1910 living on Sunbeam/Winborne Road with his wife Safronia (Bunch). Sometime in late 1886 and 1887 he must have run into financial problems, as his small children at that time - James, Frank, John, Eason, Henry and Lucinda (according to court documents) were put under the guardianship of Benjamin J. Bryant in Southampton County, VA. It is unclear if they remained with him until they reached adulthood or not. It appears they may have. In 1878 some land in Wilson County, NC was sold and divided between he and his siblings. He listed his occupation as steamboat watchmen when he married both Sarah in 1879 and Safronia in 1885.

According to his Civil War papers, he was 6'2" with fair complexion and blue eyes with light hair. By occupation he was a farmer. He served under Captain Thomas Ruffins Company

Marriage Notes for E

Marriage was found in the Marriage Register Book #3 1876-1879 in Southampton, Virginia on page 404. They were married on 1-16-1879 at Mr. Bailey's residence. He was a widower age 38 and she was single age 28. He listed his profession as a watchman on steamboat.

Notes for S
AFRONIA WHITLEY:
Taken from obituary:

On August 22, 1923 Mrs. Safronia William Bailey finished the work which God gave her to do and was called home to receive her reward. She had been a great sufferer for many years and no doubt death was a great relief to her. She had lived to reach the age of 76 years and was loved and esteemed by every one who came in contact with her. She was a good woman, a faithful wife, a devoted mother, a kind and loving sister and a true friend. In the home-going of such choice spirit all present felt hat her gain was our loss. I do not feel that any words of mine can do justice to such a bright light. Everyone saw that light and knew her good works.

She is survived by two sons, F.C. Whitley of Handsom, and J.R. Bailey of Florence, S.C.; two brothers, J.R. Whitley of Rocky Mount, N.C. and R.O. Whitley of Como, N.C. and two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Wall of Suffolk and Miss Ina Whitley of Como, N.C.

The body was brought to the family burying ground on the farm of J.T. Bryant and laid to rest by the side of her husband, the late E.E. Bailey whom preceded her to the Great Beyond by many years. Her funeral services were conducted by her Pastor Rev. H.J. Paylor, assisted by Rev. N.B. Foushee and Rev. B. F. Raymond. The active pallbearers were J.T. Bryant, J.W. Bryant, E.J. Bailey, Gordon Brett, A.J. Bryant and Walter Brett; honorary, V.K. Daughtrey, Marvin Railey, E.F. Drake, L.L. Bryant, Hugh Barrett, J.C. Brett, Dr. S.J. Railey and E.L. Fiers.

It is useless to say that she will be greatly missed in her community where she was loved by everyone. To her mourning children and her devoted brothers and sisters we would but remind them of Christ's words as found in the 14th chapter of St. John's Gospel, which give to us light in the time of darkness, hope in the presence of despair, life in the face of death, and happiness in the hour of sorrow.
