Thomas Young was born in County Mayo, Ireland and while still a young man emmigrated to America and settled in New York. He filed his Declaration of Intent to become a Citizen of the United States in the State of New York, Allegany County on October 11th, 1854. In 1855 he came to Minnesota and settled in Woodland Township in Waverly, Minnesota, where he lived until 1900 when he moved to his daughter's home in Arlington, Sibley County, Minnesota. The plat map of this time showed him owning S 1/2 of SW 1/4 of Section #2 in Township 118 of Range 26. (80 acres) He legally filed and was granted land patent on March 28th of 1859. He cleared this land and had errected a house built of logs.It was 10 X 12 feet with a double J shingled roof, a door, board floor and one window.He moved into this house in the month of January 1858.At this time he had cleared approximately 6 acres and fenced/cultivated the same. He married Sara McHugh at St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota on January 14th in 1862.They lived in Waverly, Minnesota where they raised their 6 Children - William, Thomas, John, Dennis, Mary and James. He and his wife are buried in the Waverly, Minnesota cemetery. | |
