Carl enlisted in the U.S. Navy 23 April 1917. He was trained as a wireless operator and served on battleships USS Pennsylvania (12 to 18 November 1917), USS South Carolina (18 November to 19 December 1917), and USS Carolyn 7 August 1918 to 11 November 1918 during World War I. Later he was employed by the Maine Central Railroad and became assistant superintendent of a division. He was living in Waterville, Maine in 1930 and working for the railroad.

Notes for Frederick Herbert Carlow:
Frederick ran away to sea at the age of 16 where he became a cook on board a ship. He is known to have sailed at least to South America during that time. When he came back to Red Beach (Calais), Maine and settled down, he worked in the delivery business from his own farm and fishing business. He delivered produce including vegatables, butter, buttermilk, meat and fish with his own horse drawn cart. He crafted his own weirs and nets and fished in the St. Croix River. In 1900, 1910 and 1920 Frederick is living in Calais and is working as a farmer.

  Notes for Norman Frederick Carlow:
Norman grew up in the Red Beach area of Calais, Maine. In his early days he worked at quarrying and at the shoe factory. He served in World War I in the Navy as a cook's helper on a mine sweeper in the New York harbor. The day after his marriage to Evelyn Alexander, he and his wife moved out to Marine City, Michigan where Norman took a job with the border patrol. It was a busy time since it was Prohibition and catching "rum runners" on the Great Lakes was a challenge. He and Evelyn stayed for about five years but returned to Calais because of his health. They rented a home for a while before purchasing a home in the Bog Brook area of Calais in 1942. Norman worked at a number of jobs on returning to Calais but became know for his skilled work as a mason.

Evelyn graduated from the Calais Academy, Calais, Maine 23 June 1919. Soon after graduating she went to work for the next 8 years as a bookkeeper and cashier for N. A. Olsson's in Calais. While working she became a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club in Calais. After getting married she and her husband moved to Marine City, Michigan for 5 years. After that she spent the rest of her life in Calais. Evelyn was very active in the church, particularly the Bog Brook Wesleyan Methodist Church located across the street from her home in Calais.

Maurice served in the Army during World War I from 1 June 1918 to 5 April 1919. His position was wagoner in Company F in the 3rd Corps Artillary Park. He served overseas in Europe from 2 September 1918 to 27 March 1919 where he saw action. In 1920 he was living with his parents in Calais, Maine and working as a factory laborer. After getting married he settled in Fall River, Massachusetts and worked as an auto mechanic. In 1930 he is living in Fall River and working as a manager of a battery station. His health was never very good after his experience in the war.

Ivy neither married nor had any children. After graduating from high school she went on and studied at the Holy Rosary Comercial School in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. In the 1930's and 40's she worked in local fish packing factories and was known for her speed at packing. After the fish factories failed she worked in the wreath making factories. Ivy was good at working with her hands which included sewing and knitting. She lived at home taking care of her parents who lived about 5 miles west of Calais, Maine on Route 1 until their deaths. She continued to live at the family homestead alone until just a few years before her own death.

In 1900 Charles and his family were borders with his uncle John Noble in Calais, Maine and he was working as a fisherman. In 1910 and 1920 Charles and Dora are living on their own in Calais and Charles is working as a farmer. In 1925 he and Dora moved to Newport, Maine where he operated the Moter Inn Cabins on the Pittsfield Road. In 1930 Charles and Dora are living in Palmyra, Maine and their grandchildren Stephen and Richard White are living with them.

Dora is probably the female Lulu listed in her father's household in New River, California in 1860. On 10 April 1862 she was adopted by attorney Henry W. and Susan (Clark) Havens [Humboldt Times researched by Margaret Wooden, 2006]. In 1870 she is living in the Havens' home in Eureka, California. In 1880 she was living in Eureka and working as a servant in the house of Charles H. King. Dora sold a Eureka lot to a Frances Hickman 22 January 1884 [Wooden, 2006]. She was an active member of the Grange while in Maine.
