Notes for Norman Frederick Carlow: Norman grew up in the Red Beach area of Calais, Maine. In his early days he worked at quarrying and at the shoe factory. He served in World War I in the Navy as a cook's helper on a mine sweeper in the New York harbor. The day after his marriage to Evelyn Alexander, he and his wife moved out to Marine City, Michigan where Norman took a job with the border patrol. It was a busy time since it was Prohibition and catching "rum runners" on the Great Lakes was a challenge. He and Evelyn stayed for about five years but returned to Calais because of his health. They rented a home for a while before purchasing a home in the Bog Brook area of Calais in 1942. Norman worked at a number of jobs on returning to Calais but became know for his skilled work as a mason. |

In the 1930's and 40's she worked in local fish packing factories and was known for her speed at packing. After the fish factories failed she worked in the wreath making factories. Ivy was good at working with her hands which included sewing and knitting. She lived at home taking care of her parents who lived about 5 miles west of Calais, Maine on Route 1 until their deaths. She continued to live at the family homestead alone until just a few years before her own death. |
