On his sons Lewis' tombstone, located in Groveport Cemetery, Groveport, Franklin County, Madison Township, Ohio, the inscription reads "Lewis H; son of F. I. and S". That means there is a possibility, that Isaac, was his MIDDLE name.
Isaac Hamler suffered an injury while serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. From his pension papers he wrote the following: "On 10 March 1864, our company was ordered by our commanding officer to cross Stone River on a railroad bridge. In so doing, we were overtaken by a train and in the exertion of getting out of the way of said train on the narrow bridge, I slipped and fell causing a double anginal hernia which has continued to afflict me ever since. Also at or near Cleaveland, TN about the middle of May 1864, I contracted chronic diarrhea from exposure to bad water and unwholesome diet. That said chronic diarrhea has resulted in chronic constipation, inflammation of the lower bowel disease and rupture. I had no hospital treatment for the hernia, but was treated for bowels by a regimental surgeon."
Isaac had to get numerous affidavits from friends, and several medical examinations to confirm his condition, when he applied for a pension on 11 Jan 1886. His first application was denied, but he was persistent and applied a second time. After several years, his application was approved in 1890, and he received a pension of $6/month, and later increased to $12/month. He died five years later, in 1895.
From "The History of Madison Township", by G.F. Bareis, he says Isaac Hamler died 19 Jun, 1895.
