Descendants of Michael Snipes

Generation No. 2

2. HENRY CALVIN2 SNIPES (MICHAEL1) was born October 07, 1829 in Burke County, NC, and died March 02, 1909 in Burke County, NC. He married (1) CASSANDRA JEMIMA "JANIE" MULL. She was born December 07, 1831 in Burke County, NC, and died December 18, 1881 in Burke County, NC. He married (2) MAGGIE L. SHUPING May 27, 1900. She was born February 1866, and died Unknown.

Notes for H
ENRY CALVIN SNIPES:
Calvin Snipes was a carpenter who assisted in 1873 in converting an old
log church built in 1848 into a frame church. The church, located off
Old Highway 18 near Mull's School, was first called Bartel's Chapel
after its first pastor's name. It began as a family church; the name
was changed in 1885 to Mt. Home. Several Snipes and their descendants
are buried there.

Calvin Snipes worked as a night watchman at the Morganton State Hospital
at the barn. He owned land across from Mull's School and lived in a log
house there.

When the Civil War came, he enlisted in the 6th Regiment, Company D at
Camp Stokes on 10/26/1864. He was admitted to a hospital at Richmond,
VA on 3/26/1865 with a gunshot wound of the hand; however, place and
date of wound was not reported. He was captured in the hospital on
4/3/1865 and confined at Newport News, VA until released on June 15,
1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Mr. Snipes remarried his
housekeeper, Maggie Shuping, when he was 70. Ms. Shuping gave her age
on the marriage license as 35. Mr. Snipes did not give his correct age.
This second marriage was not well received by his first wife's children.

The 1900 Census showed Maggie Shuping Snipes giving her date of birth as
February, 1866. Therefore, she would have been 34 at the time of the
marriage. Harry Snipes gave his date of birth as May, 1830 in the 1900
Census which conflicts with his tombstone's date.

  Notes for SARAH ELIZABETH SNIPES:
Sarah Snipes Franklin was a hard worker. Her husband had a weakness for
alcohol and much responsibility was left to her. Sarah tended sheep and
took produce to Morganton to sell. At one period, she worked in the
laundry department at the NC School for the Deaf. Her brother, Robert
Christopher, killed his best friend, "Big John" Brittain in self-defense
at John Hudson's house on the Shelby Road around 1912. Robert hid from
the law for a period of time and Sarah would bring him food in the
woods.

After her brother Robert died in 1917, Sarah gave dinners in lieu of
neighbors assisting in finishing Robert's house for his widow and
children. This house was located across the road from Mt. Home Church.
She helped care for Robert's two youngest children after their mother
Mary became ill from T.B.

Sarah had heart trouble and in her last illness, a Methodist minister
was called in to see her and he read the Twenty-third Psalm. She told
him she had read the scriptures many times. Dr. Phifer would drive out
in his horse and buggy to attend her at her residence. Eventually, Dr.
Phifer brought her to Grace Hospital where she died.
