1. JOHN A. "POPE"² WILLIAMS (WILLIAM¹) was born 1830, and died July 26, 1864. He married MARGARET SHINN (SHENN). She was born May 05, 1826 in Mississippi, and died January 12, 1899.

Notes for JOHN A. "POPE" WILLIAMS:
Mr. John A. Williams enlisted in the Civil War on February 13, 1862. He
was present or accounted for until he deserted on November 13, 1863. He
was apprehended at an unspecified date and was court-martialed and
confined at Richmond, Virginia with "ball and chain". He died in the
hospital at Castle Thunder Prison, Richmond, on July 26, 1864 with cause
of death not reported. Inquiries with the Williams family revealed that
Mr. Williams had received word that one of his children was sick and he
was attempting to get back hom causing him to "desert".

Civil War records show Mr. Williams enlisting in Burke County with
Company D at age 35 on February 13, 1862; however, the June 1860 Census
shows Mr. Williams giving his age as 30 lending one to believe his
birthday was sometime in 1830 rather than 1826.
