Notes for Edward Barton: Barton Family Ancestry, Sources and Authorities ( as provided by research done by Louise C. Barton in the 1960's and by Thomas Newton Barton in the 1980's)
The name Barton was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086. The name itself probably means defender of the town "bar" meaning defense, and "ton" meaning town. The earliest Bartons lived in Lancashire, England. One Ralph De Barton was sheriff of Anglesey during the reign of Kings Henry IV and V. According to one source, there were five brothers living in Lancashire, and of them, one went Ireland and changed his name to Barton of Grove, one to Scotland to become Bartan, one to France to be Bartin, one to southern England to be Burton, and the fifth, Marmaduke Barton to America where he settled in Essex. The Rufus Barton, from whom descended the Warren Bartons was a relative of these five Bartons, probably living in Lancashire also.
