Louis VI, b. 1081, d. Aug. 1, 1137, succeeded his father, PHILIP I, as king of France in 1108. As early as 1100, however, he had begun to take over the military leadership of the monarchy from his aging and lethargic father. During this period the French princes were virtually independent, and the king had effective power only in the royal domain consisting essentially of the Ile-de-France. Even this region was infested with unruly barons who used their castles as bases from which to terrorize the countryside, plunder churches, and disrupt transportation. In 30 years of almost constant fighting, Louis VI, with strong support from the clergy, forced these barons to accept his discipline, won the respect of the princes, and laid the foundations for the future growth in monarchical power. Although not an eager supporter of church reform, Louis had good relations with the popes, one of whom was his wife's uncle. He held his own against such dangerous and powerful neighbors as the duke of Normandy, who was HENRY I of England, and the count of Blois. He also led an army that repelled a German invasion in 1124, although he was less successful when he tried to intervene in Flanders in 1127. In the latter year he reduced the power of the Garlande family, which had sought to dominate the royal administration, and thereafter his main advisors were Raoul, count of Vermandois, and SUGER, abbot of Saint-Denis, who became his biographer. Shortly before Louis's death in 1137, ELEANOR OF AQUITAINE became his ward and married his son and successor, Louis VII.
