Philip I, b. 1052, d. July 29 or 30, 1108, was king of France from 1060 to 1108. He was 8 years old when he succeeded his father, HENRY I. For 7 years he was under the guardianship of Baldwin V, count of Flanders, and was unable to interfere with the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Philip ruled only a very small part of France, and even there some of the castellans defied and embarrassed him. He was in constant trouble with the church because of a bigamous marriage, resistance to church reform, and slothful, sensual behavior. After 1100 his son LOUIS VI gradually took over the government.
