Ylitalo

In Ylävä there's a place where some houses located near the upper course of a river are known collectively as Ylitalo (literally 'the upper house(s)'), which in time also takes root as a dwelling name. The individual's name living in that particular house becomes reduced to the name of house itself (Ylitalo).

Many examples of this kind of occurrence exist. In Ikaali there was an Yli-Myllymaan talon (literally the house of the Yli-Mylly family) which becomes known as Ylitalo (the upper house), and over time the Yli-Mylly inhabitants become known as the Ylitalos.

There are many instances of Ylitalo inhabitant names and surnames in Varsinais Finland, southern Häme, Pohjanmaa and in northern Finland. It is also known in the northern parts of Turku and Pori provinces, and in Uusimaa and in parts of the Kymen valley. Ylitalo is also common as a talonnimi (farm name) in Kainuu.

Ylätalo is used as a dwelling name in the rest of Finland ('ylä' to denote "upper'). As a surname, Ylätalo is concentrated in the Kymen valley, but it also appears in regios of Päijänti and in parishes in southern and eastern Pohjanmaa (Soini, Ähtäri).

Regarding the name Ylöstalo. It is known as a talonnimi and as a surname in Häme and in locations in Uusimaa and the Kymen valley. It is also common as a talonnimi in the areas around Perniö.

Ylistalo is chiefly a Varsinais Finland talonnimi (from Vehma to Koski, to the Salo regions). It is much rarer as a surname.

In Siikaisi the surname Ylinentalo is known.

These types of names (Ylitalo, Ylöstalo etc.) have also been known to be adopted by individuals during the 1906 name-change.

Some examples of old Ylitalo type names:

The name Ylitalo occurs in Kittilä (1793); Kauhava (1684); Ylivieska (1823); Tammela (1856).

Ylätalo has been recorded in Masku (1672); Sippola (1850); Multia (1698); Mäntsälä (1774).

Ylöstalo is recorded in Janakkala (1774); (Hattula (1821); Ii (1729).

Ylistalo in Raisio (1559) and Oripää (1813).

COUPLE OBSERVE 50TH

Mr. and Mrs. Matt Pietila, pioneers of Green Valley township, will celebrate their 50th anniversary on Thursday, April 15. Mr. Pietila is 79 years old while Mrs. Pietila is 65. When a young man of 24, Mr. Pietila came from Finland to Crystal Falls, Michigan. Here he worked a few years at logging camps and on the railroad. Later he went to Duluth. After working a few months here, he was put off from work and no other jobs were available. At this time homesteads were opened. In company of some other Finns, he went west to New York Mills to file a claim.
With four other men he arrived on what he thought his claim in November, 1884. Here a small log hut was built, and the men spent the winter living on the game that was plentiful. In the spring, Mr. Pietila discovered from landmarks that he was not living on his own claim; therefore he moved to his own land in Sec. 32, Green Vally Twp. At this time the surrounding country was covered with heavy timber. There were only paths and all the supplies had to be carried by pack. The following winters were spent improving the homestead and in summer work was available on the railroad that was being built from Hawley to Red Lake Falls.
At this time Mr. Pietila bought his first cow from Norman county and led it to New York Mills. Here more cattle were bought and a team of oxen. These were driven back to his home.
On April 15, 1887, he was united in marriage to Anna Ylitalo also of Green Valley. Mrs. Pietila came to Becker county with her parents when a young girl of 13. Mr. Pietila have had 13 children.
Mr. and Mrs. Pietila are quietly living on the old homestead.
An open house reception is to be given by the children in the evening of April 15.
