Notes for W
ILLIAM KENDALL BERRY:
Farmer, family listed in 1850 & 1860 census of Dent County, MO. William received a Civil War Pension for services in Co. F, 24th MO. Infantry. Claims he lived in Salem, Dent, MO. from 1846 to 1860; he resided in Brookline station, MO. and in Arkansas. Also, he lived in Texas Co., Stone Co., & Howell Co. MO. In 1871, he was in Ft. Smith to 1874 and Jefferson City until 8/9/1881. Returned to Greene Co. MO. Apparently he was married several times. Pension App. #441 420, filed 2/28/1882 from MO. Certificate # 525 336. Enlisted Brookline, Greene Co. MO., 8/20/1861- discharged 10/15/1864 at St. Louis, as a pvt. He is buried in the Molly-Wright Cemetery with tombstone giving only military service.

According to Edna Hazel Lowery (descends from the Melton line), William was married 3 times. Malinda being first. The marriage was preformed by George Cole, M. G. (minister of the gospel). The second marriage I have no data on other than she apparently has been married once before & died in 1871. William's 3rd marriage was preformed by W. F. McCullough, Minister. (the correct spelling of this is "McCullah"). It also ended in divorce.

William was described as 5'7" tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He saw duty during the Civil War in Louisiana, Georgia, and Tennessee. He was ill and hospitalized in Mound City, ILL. Hospital and at Jefferson Barracks at St. Louis, MO. He was a cooper, and resided at Brookline Station and in the state of Arkansas.

William is also listed in the 1900 Stone county Missouri census in Washington Twp. as head of household 1610 with servant and 2 wards.

AMES HAMILTON BERRY:
James Hamilton Berry was married three times. First to Martha Caroline Triplett. His second wife was Elvira Catherine Pettygrew . She was born February 26, 1834 and died September 7. 1915. Both Martha Caroline and Elvira Catherine are buried in Fair lawn Cemetery, Stillwater Oklahoma. James Hamilton is buried between them. Some records spell his middle name Hambleton.

His third wife was Mary Matilda Brown. She was born April 16, 1844 and died February 19, 1929. James only lived a little less than 6 months after they married.

James was in the Civil War and was wounded at Hartsville and Pea Ridge. He fought for the North, was a Private in Company D, 48th Regiment of Missouri Infantry. He entered the armed service August 25. 1864 and served six months. He was discharged March 25, 1865. He had a bullet in his knee and drew a pension for this war injury.

James and his first wife had 13-14 children and there were four surviving at the time of his death. They had 3 sets of twins all died at an early age.

He also claimed to be a relative of Jesse James (the outlaw) but never mentioned the relationship or closeness of it. His mother-in-law was Matilda James Brown and perhaps this was the connection.

James's cousin, Charles A. Skiles, born Feb 15, 1886, died Feb 13, 1904, he is buried beside one of the James's wives. The tombstone in Fair lawn Cemetery has his name spelled Charlesa. J. H. had his body moved to the cemetery in Stillwater because he was buried in a cemetery somewhere north of town. It is not known if the cemetery was being abandoned or if he just wanted his cousin lo be close to his family. William Lafayette Berry helped moved the body to Fair Lawn Cemetery in Stillwater, OK.
