OSEPH GEORGE WASHINGTON BERRY:
Buried in the Fairview Cem. in Vinita, Craig, OK. Father of 10 children. Sources from: "The Story of Craig County, Its People and Places."

Joe and Mary Married and settled in Dent County near Salem, MO. Seven children were born. On Oct. 20, 1906 they left Missouri on their way to Texas. They were traveling by horse and and wagon with Joe and Emma Asbridge. They had been on the road for 2 weeks when they reached Vinita, Indian Territory. At this time the railroad had not been able to get cars so corn was stacked high in the streets. They decided to stay and help load the corn and ended up spending the rest of their lives in Kelso district northeast of Vinita. Three more children were born - Manda, Loretta and Edgar.

Joe and Aunt Beck were typical farmers. They milked cows, raised pigs, horses, chickens and Mary always kept geese from which she made feather pillows and mattresses. They raised crops and always had a large garden. The children, 8 of which were girls, worked in the fields, cultivating, hoeing, picking berries. Mary made pickles in wooden barrels, canned blackberries by the gallon, stored vegetables in root cellars for winter use, packed barrels of apples for winter and always made lye soap. They butchered 6 hogs at a time.

Joe and Aunt beck's home was always open to anyone needing food and lodging - especially anyone from Missouri. Some stayed overnight but many moved their families in to stay month before moving on. A typical Sunday dinner at their home would be 40 to 50 people there-most of them unexpected.

Dear Herbert and family, April 29, 1984

Under Benjamin Franklin and Martha Elizabeth Berry Martin, there was a child younger than Ethel ( your grandmother ). It was a baby girl named Bertha. However, since no records of her, exist. I have omitted mentioning her. She lives only in the memories of the older generation and most of them are gone now. Only two remain. But I feel the story of both her and your grandmother should be preserved for those who come after. If living, she would be 74 or 75 now.

The story is thus:
Martha Elizabeth, then divorced from Benjamin Franklin and having custody of the children, became very ill with brain fever. She remained unconscious for weeks. Neighbors were tending the children. James and Ethel at home but little Bertha, under a year old was cared for in the home of a neighbor. Eventually the neighbors tired of the responsibility, so called in the sheriff. It was decided to place the children in an orphanage. James was 6 years old and Ethel was 3. James overheard them discussing it and young as he was, he understood. He decided to run away and go to his grandparents, Christopher Columbus and Martha Jane Martin. He tried to get Ethel to go with him but she was afraid, so he finally went alone. It was a distance of 6 or 7 miles and it took him quite some time to get there. He finally made his grandparents understand and they went to get the children. By the time they arrived the family taking care of Bertha had moved during the night, leaving no trace and Ethel had been taken to an orphanage. They could find out nothing.

When Martha finally recovered she was heartbroken and began a search that lasted many years. She found no trace of Bertha and how she found Ethel, I don't know -- but when she found her, Ethel was married and had 4 children. So it must have been between 1926 and 1929, as she died in 1929. This about covers what i have on the Martin & Berry family. Don't seem to get anymore done lately but I'm still hoping to continue.
Love Great Aunt & Uncle, Ruth & James
