The 1820 Ohio U.S. census for Greene County, Sugar Creek Township, page 143, list a John Berryhill as head of family. It list 1 male 26 to 45, and 1 female 26 to 45. It shown one person engaged in farming. This researcher takes this to be the same John Berryhill listed above.

The 1830 Ohio U.S. census for Ohio, Warren County, Hamilton Township, page 299, list a John Berryhill as head of family. It list 1 male 20 to 30, 1 female under 5, and 1 female 20 to 30.

The 1840 Ohio U.S. census for Ohio, Allen County, Bath Township, page 129, List a John Berryhill as head of family. It list 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, and 1 male 40-50. It ;list 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 30-40. This researcher takes to be the same John Berryhill as listed above.

According to a Mrs. Beryl McBride, John and Rachel lost two daughters as children. A Rebecca and Julia. According to Mrs. McBride Rebecca burned to death when her cloths caught fire during a grass fire. No cause of death was given for Julia.

The Ohio Genealogical Society published a book on Ohio Marriage records through 1820. On page 80 it is recorded that John Berryhill married Rachel James on November 23, 1819 in Greene County, Ohio. Ref. 00A 092.

This is a second marriage for John Berryhill after his wife Rachel James Berryhill died in 1846. It is listed in marriage records published by the Allen County, Ohio marriage records. It is listed immediately after the record of his son John Berryhill Jr.s marriage to Mary Ellen Harvey. Both names are listed simply as John Berryhill. This has led some to belive this is the same John Berryhill and confused some researchers into thinking John Berryhill divorced and remarried which is not the case.

Researcher Ronald L. Berryhill subscribed to the Genealogy Helper magazine and responded to an add for Surname Sheets from Yates Publishing Company in Stevensville, MT. They had 55 sheets available for the name Coffelt For $15.00 On April 17, 1997 the sheets were received and that when this researcher found out Julia Ann's last name was Margrave. This researcher immediately did a search of the marriage records he had available on CD and found the marriage record described in the marriage notes. Further research will continue on the name Margrave.

Finding this name concludes a milestone in this researcher's genealogy and family history. He now has the complete names of all his great great grandparents.

Further research of the Margrave name at the Oklahoma Historical Society on April 21, 1997, researching the 1840, 1850, and 1870, Missouri census records. In Osage County MO, for 1850 is listed an Anthony Margrave, 55, Farmer. Until further research proves this possible wrong, Anthony Margrave will be shown to be the father of Julia Ann Margrave.

Using the Family Tree Maker's CD for the marriage index for selected states, 1728-1850, in Osage County, Missouri there is listed a Moses Coffet marriage to a July Ann Margrave. The date is March 20, 1844. Further research at the Oklahoma Historical Society on April 21, 1997. In the Osage County, Missouri marriages is listed a Moses (P.) Coffet and July An Mragraves (Merrygraves) listed on page 30. It shows the marriage date as 20, March 1844.

Harrison removed form Ohio to McLean County, IL. Then to Warren County, IA in 1855. Then to Missouri, possibly Jasper County between 1856 & 1858. Harrison and Sarah had 12 children.

March 3, 1997, Ron Berryhill researching at the Oklahoma Historical Society looked in the 1860 IL census and found Joel Wescott (25) and Elizabeth Wescott (19) in Piatt County, Willow Branch, living with a Felix Watts, a 40 year old farmer. Also in the house was Permila Walls 37, Felix's wife and a Jacob Watson 19. Elizabeth was possible a twin to Jacob. And Felix W. Wescott, Joel and Elizabeth's oldest son born in 1860 was quite possibly names after Felix Watts.

I was surfing the net and came across the Illinois genealogy pages and
noticed that you had submitted my great grandfather's name. I have other
information such as his birth and death dates and brothers and sisters. Also
I have information about Elizabeth (Brock). Felix's dad's name was Joel and
was born in Ohio.

October 1997, Ron Berryhill was in Montacello, Piatt County, IL and found Joel served in the Civil War in IL, Company E, Corporal. He enlisted August 11, 1862 and was mustered out June 21, 1865. Jacob Watson served the same time and was also a Corporal.

Joel evidentially died between 1870 and 1880. The 1880 MO census for Newton County, Marion Township list Elizabeth as head of household. See notes for Elizabeth Watson Wescott.

Further research by Ron Berryhill at the Jasper County Historical Society on December 23, 1997, revealed that Joel Wescott died the same day as his 2-year old daughter Lillie. They are buried side by side in the Stone Cemetery in south Jasper County, MO. Research continues.

The 1880 census for Newton County, MO, list Elizabeth Watson as head of household. It list her at age 39 and born in IL. List with Elizabeth are Felix age 20 born in IL, Emma 18, IL, Clars 15, IL, Willie 13, MO, Minnie 10, MO, and Eward 8, MO. They at listed as lining in Newton County, Marion Township, Vol 24, E.D. 98, Sheet 25, and Line 32.

is that Jarusha Hornbeck was born Nov 8, 1832, died Apr 16, 1862, d/o Jams
and Mar McIntiyre. here were 11 children in this family from Carthage,
Jasper Co., MO. They had previous to the civil war lived in Douglas Co.,
KS. I have her married to a Brock but no first name and nothing further on
her personally, but I have all her ancestors and a little on her brothers
and sisters. especially her brother John. Is this the one? You may want a

Brock, Funeral services for James Brock, 73 years old, who died at 11 o'clock last night at his home eight miles east on twentieth street will be conducted at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Duenwig Baptist church. Burial will be in Forest park cemetery. Surviving are his widow Mrs. Erma Brock; five sons, Charles F. Brock and James S. Brock motor route A. Arthur C. Brock of Duenwig and Wiley F. Brock Carthage, and two sisters, Mrs Lizzie Wescott of Joplin and Dica Brock of Diamond.

Carthage MO, September 16, all real estate of the late Perry Brock, former county judge goes to his widow, Dora Brock, during her lifetime, and the personal property is to be divided equally between Mrs. Brock and their two sons Fred and Emerial under the terms of the will, which has been filed for probate. The real-estate is composed of two eighty-acre farms, which are to go to Fred Brock, and the residence property on West Central avenue, which is to go to Emeral Brock in the event of their mother's death.

The farm lands are valued at $4,000 and the residence property at $2,000. The personal property has an appraised valuation of $23,440.05 of which $22,833.44 is in liberty bonds.

Mrs Dora Brock dies at Carthage

Carthage, MO, May 30, Mrs Dora Alice Brock, 66 years old, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning at her home, 714 West Central avenue. She fractured an arm in a fall February 15 and later fractured a hip in a fall down the cellar stars in her home. She was the widow of Terry (should b Perry) Brock, one-time judge of the circuit court.

She was a member of the first Methodist Episcopal church and the Rebecca lodge.

Surviving are two sons, Fred Brock of Carterville and Emerald Brock of Springfield; a sister, Mrs. Maude Hutchison of Los Angeles, and two brothers R. S. Franklin of Dallas and J. W. Franklin of Joplin.

29. Elvira Bird, born November 03, 1819 in North Carolina; died October 21, 1890 in Cochran Cemetery, McMinn County, TN. She was the daughter of 58. Richard Bird and 59. Elizabeth Westlake.

Notes for John J. Dixon:
After John J.'s first wife died, he married (2) Elvira Bird, daughter of Richard Bird, a traveling Methodist minister. Proof of this connection to the circuit rider came from a McMinn County court case on 23 July 1853 [#118, p.65]. It stated that R. Bird was the father-in-law of John J. Dixon and Joseph Hamilton (Susan Selinda/Selena/Salina Bird, born 5 April 1807, marriage announcement in the North Carolina Spectator of 18 June 1831: "Miss Salina Bird, dau of Richard Bird to Joseph Hamilton June 14, 1831, on Catawba River, Burke County") Elvira had been born 3 November 1818 in Black Mountain, North Carolina. There is a family story that she was one-half Native American [No evidence, probably not so]. It is unknown how the couple met, but they married 16 January 1845 in McMinn County, Tennessee (Book C/116). They had six children together.

[Information on the preceding children of John J. Dixon and both his wives came from the Raper newspaper article, research done by H.R. Thomas, a page from the John J. Dixon family Bible, and later censuses.]

John J. and Elvira appeared on three censuses together. The first was the 1850 [McMinn 258-1950], which listed the names of the entire family. John J. (mistakenly noted as "William" by the census taker) was registered as a 45-year-old machinist. His birthplace was said to have been Tennessee. Elvira counted herself as being 32, also born in Tennessee (although the state is doubtful.) The children living with them, all born in Tennessee, were Elizabeth 20, William M 18, James Harvey 16, Mary J. 11,
Susan 5, John H. 4, and Nathaniel 1.

The 1860 McMinn census listed the Dixon's' home as within the Eureka Post Office area. John J. was 54 and a farmer. Elvira was 42. On this census, she claimed, probably correctly, to have been born in North Carolina. John J.'s children by his first wife were, by 1860, living away. Enumerated with the family were Susan 15, John 12, Nathaniel 10, Eli 5, Richard 7, and Riley 2.

For the 1870 McMinn census, John J., age 63, once again had his occupation recorded as "machinist." The family was living in the 6th district [p.4, #1-1]. Elvira was 51, born in North Carolina. John Hamilton, 22, and Nathaniel, 20, were still living at home, although they were said to have been "in school." Since both were teachers, perhaps Elvira considered the census taker to have asked where they worked. Other children listed were Richard 17, Eli C. 15, and Rily W. 12. Riley really was a student.

John J.'s life is also able to be followed through court records and other legal documents. For instance, in a McMinn County court case filed 8 April 1844 [#5, p. 2] - Moses Cunningham vs. Eli and John J. Dixon
and Elisha Bryant, Eli Dixon had loaned money [McMinn Deed Book H, p. 94, 21 December 1842] to a Thomas Frazier of Polk County, with John J. issuing the deed of trust. Frazier then defaulted and proceeded to leave the country. The note passed through four different hands, Eli's, John J.
Dixon's, Amond Bond's, and Moses Cunningham's, with each man endorsing it to the next, before being declared invalid and uncollectible by the bank. When the bank tried to sell property belonging to the four men to recover its losses, only one of the men, Cunningham's, property was claimed and
sold by the sheriff. In the court suit of 1844, Cunningham charged Eli Dixon with making a fraudulent sale of his property to Elisha Bryant (Cunningham must have felt Eli did this only to get his money out of a bad note and to avoid having land that the bank could repossess.)

In another document found, McMinn County paid John J. for having made a walnut coffin for a pauper in 1849. In 1858, according to the Wills and Estate Records of McMinn, John J. served as a commissioner. In 1871, just a few years before he died, he was in a law suit over which faction of the Presbyterian Church - the northern or the southern - had jurisdiction over his church, Mars Hill Presbyterian in Athens.

The final legal document uncovered was court case #389, McMinn p.140-141, filed 4 Dec.1873 - Susannah Brient vs. John J. Dixon et al: In 1857, Jacob P. Brient and the Dixons bought the mill site and started the
Eureka Mills factory, each having a half-interest. In 1860, Elisha Brient had some debts, so John J. and Jacob put up their mill property in a deed of trust as security. In 1868, the holder of the trust sold the property to Elisha and he became the trustee. In 1869, a family of McElwees were awarded a judgment against John J. and Wm. M. which constituted a lien upon the entire water power, mills, machinery, and buildings of Eureka Mills. Nothing was left John J. except the equity of redemption (the ability to buy back the mills). In 1870, Hugh McElwee, John J., and Elisha signed an agreement to extend the time of redemption until 1 March 1871. If John J. did not redeem the mills, then Elisha would give up to Hugh McElwee the half interest of the Dixons and Hugh would relinquish the lien on the other half (belonging to Jacob Brient). In the meantime (Aug 1871), Elisha died, and Susannah, his widow, purchased Hugh's interest in the agreement and in the judgment. John J. finally could not redeem the mills, tried some legal maneuvering, but lost. The court gave the Dixons' half-interest in the Mills to Susannah. The Dixons appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court, but John J. had died (8 January 1874) before that appeal was concluded. Nothing is known about the result of that suit at this time.

Lula (Dixon) Parsons, John J.'s granddaughter, told what must have been the same tale in this manner. The carpetbaggers were trying to take away John J.'s mill. He was riding everywhere on horseback, trying to get some money to buy it back. He wasn't having any luck. One day, it was pouring rain.
He rode out anyway. When he came back, it was dark. He fell off his horse, possibly from exhaustion, in the front yard. The family carried him into bed. He died the very next day.

It isn't apparent from just reading the law suit which people John J.'s family would have considered "carpetbaggers." Susannah Brient, widow of Elisha, ended up owning the Dixons' part of the mill, and she was probably from the area. Elisha Brient was an in-law of Eli Dixon [whose marriage was performed in McMinn County in 1830], as proved in a land sale by the Jones heirs in Blount County in 1861 [Book aa, p. 283]. Eli Dixon's wife was Charity Jones; Elisha Briant's wife was named Susan Jones.

Elvira Dixon lived another sixteen years after John J.'s death on 8 January 1874. She had him buried, for whatever reason, next to his first wife, Mary Caroline, in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens, Tennessee, in McMinn County. She appeared on the 1880 McMinn census [Mc90-90], counting herself as 60 years old and asserting that she was born in North Carolina, as was her father, and that her mother was born in Virginia. Living with her were Richard 26, and Riley 21. Found also in McMinn was the James Harvey Dixon census of 1880 [Mc105-104]. It was recorded as Harvey Dixon47, Sarah 43, William 23, John 19, Robert 13, Horace 9, and Julie 4. Elvira's son Eli was living with his family next door to her [Mc91-91]. His census read Eli 24, Addie 22 (she was from Georgia, and her parents
were from Sweden and South Carolina), and daughter Amy 1.

Elvira died 21 October 1890 and is buried at Cochran Cemetery beside her son Richard Ivy Dixon.

[John J. Dixon Bible], had a narrow escape from death as a child [told in H.R. Thomas manuscript]: One day John Hamilton and some older boys went swimming (I would guess in the old Dixon Mill dam). John Hamilton was the first to get his clothes off and dive in. When he did not surface, the older boys knew something was wrong. They dived in and searched for him. One of the older boys found John Hamilton lodged under a rock or log. The boys brought him out on the bank and laid him down. He looked like he was dead. One of the older boys suggested they hold John Hamilton up by the legs with his head down to see if they could get the water to run out of his mouth. John Hamilton started breathing and coughing with every breath. He regained consciousness and became all right.

John Hamilton married (1)Tennie Boone ca.1880, had two children (Elsie, Jessie); she was deceased by 1886, according to a court case then; in Cochran Cemetery, there is a tombstone which reads "Margaret T. Dixon, wife of John H., Feb 8 1858-Aug 16 1883, there is also a child's grave reading "Daniel Dixon July 3 1883 (3 weeks old) child of John H and MT Dixon;" Margaret T. must have died of childbirth complications;

1880 McMinn CO census [p.32/286] listed John as 32 machinist born in TN and Tennie 22 born in TN;

John Hamilton married (2) Isabell (Belle) Brown by 1886, had seven children (Susie, Virgil, Gypsy, Iris, Erb, John, and Bird, ; Belle's gravestone in Cochran Cemetery has the dates 1859-1928; John H. was also buried in Cochran, with the dates listed as 1846-1925;
