Notes for Johann Christopher Kauffeld:
Christopher Kauffelt and family came to America on board the ship GLASGOWarriving on September 9, 1738.
Sara gave birth to twin boys Phillip and Nicholas Henry on board the ship in Philadelphia Harbor September 9, 1738.
The last name was changed to Coffelt when the family moved to Virginia.
All of Christopher's children lived in York, County, PA, from 1738, 1765. They then moved onto the Shenandoah Valley and settled at Stoney Creek, near the present town of Edenberg. In 1758 the Indians raided Stoney Creek and took 50 white captives. In 1754 the war in Shenandoah Valley began. Many of the Kauffeltsthat were born in America appeared to have retained the "Kauffelt" spelling of the name. This is because they could read and write and therefore did not have to have someone else write their name which when it was written phonetically was often spelled wrong.
