Notes for Andreas Griesbaum:

" From a letter written by Ed Dittmer to Hildred Ford on February 14, 1993"

Turning now to your Griesbaum origins, your grandfather Andreas
Griesbaum was born on 9 Nov 1844 in Schweighausen, a picturesque little village in the Kingdom of Baden, nestled in the Schwartzwald (Black Forest) region of southwest Germany. He is listed in the Schweighausen baptismal record as Andreas Ohnemus, an illegitimate son of Amalia Ohnemus. Although his father was not named in the baptismal records, it is believed to have been Andreas Griesbaum who was born in the hamlet of Steig, nearby Schwieghausen on 2 Nov 1823, a son of another Andreas Griesbaum and his wife Maria Anna Wangler. I have traced the Griesbaum and Ohnemus lineage back to the early 1600's in the Schwieghausen area.
On 13 August 1846 the vessel "Eli Whitney" arrived in New York from the port of Havre, France with a number of passengers including Andreas Griesbaum, age 22, Amalia Ohnemus, age 25, and Andreas Ohnemus, age given as 1/2, all three of whom were listed as from Germany and going to Ohio. After probably initially to Cincinnati, Andreas Griesbaum and Amalia Ohnemus moved on to the village of St. Peter's in Highland Township, Franklin County, Indiana, which is located only about 15 miles northwest of Cincinnati. Here Andreas and Amalia were married on 28 November 1846 and here their first daughter Mary Helen (my great-grandmother Bauer) was born on 11 Jan 1847. Andreas Griesbaum moved on with his family to Iowa prior to 1850, possibly in company with our Bauer ancestors in 1848/49, but Andreas Griesbaum tardied for a few years in Lee County, Iowa near Keokuk before moving on to Warren County, Iowa.
