John Dowling was at one time a member of Capt. Lavacher de St. Marie's Company in the First Regiment of South Carolina Infantry on the Continental Establishment commanded by Col. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney from November 1775 to February 1780.

John Dowling was later, in 1782, a private in Benton's Regiment, Marion's Brigade and took part in all the activities of that Regiment.
