FIRST GENERATION 1. George W. CURRIE Currie between 177 and 1880 in Scotland. Badge: a crown surmounted by a lion's head. Motto: Inspire To Victory. Gaelic Name: MacMhuirrich Tartans: Currie, Clan Ranald The Clan Currie, anciently Clan MacMhuirrich, have a long and honorable history. They are one of the earliest constituted Clans of the Scottish Highlands. In his book Scottish Clans and Tartans, Scottish author and historian Ian Grimble writes The Herbridean name of Currie is the corrupt English form of the MacMureach, one of the most ancient and distinguished names in Scotland's history. Through the MacMhuirrichs, the Literary Torch in the Western Isles was preserved for generations. They were recognized as the most illustrious body of learned men who were specialists in the heroic literature and genealogy of the ancient Gaelic world. According to Derek Thompson, Professor of Celtic Literature, Glasgow University, the origin of the name Currie dates from the fall of the Gaelic order in the 18th Century. During this period, the English language began to pervade what had been purely Gaelic speaking areas. There followed an influx of people who found the old Gaelic names odd and difficult to pronounce. As a result, many old Highland names were anglicized or an English name was chosen that had the faintest resemblance to the sound of the Gaelic one. The name MacMhuirrich [pronounced MacVurich] began to appear in many forms including MacMureach, MacVurich, and MacCurry and eventually took on the form of the present day Currie and other related spellings such as Curry and Currey. It is important to make it quite clear that Clan Currie in the Western Isles is quite a separate and different race from the Clan MacPherson who are also sometimes designated Clan Mhurrich from their progenitor Mhurrich - a 12th Century Abbott of Kingussie. There are a number of such cases where two distinct clans hold the same patronymic. To mention only two, there is a Clan McAuley of Dunbartonshire and a Clan McAuley of Lewis. There is also a Clan McLaren of Tiree and a Clan McLaren of Balquidder and Strathearn. Although they bear the same name it is established by heraldic and genealogical reference that there is no connection between them. MUIREDACH O'DALY - FOUNDER OF THE CLAN In his book, The Clans of Scotland, noted anthropologist and author Dr. Micheil MacDonald outlines the early history of Clan Currie. The founder of the race was Muiredach O'Daly [1180 - 1222 AD], an outstanding poet of his time, who had studied at the famous Irish Colleges. O'Daly's ancestry, which is fully recorded in the Office of Genealogies and Arms in Dublin Castle, show's his family's descent through the Royal race of Ireland back to Conn of the Hundred Battles, the 110th High King of Ireland in 177 A.D. This officially acknowledged genealogy confirms the Currie family as one of the oldest traceable families in Europe. The Office of Bardic poet was hereditary, and it was the duty of the father to dedicate and train one of his sons who showed the greatest talent. Down the line, the chosen sons were sent to the great colleges in Ireland which were then, the focal point of learning. Here the special functions of the bard were taught - oral learning, which included epic literature and genealogies, as well as eulogistic verse. In the ancient Irish colleges, bardic scholars were trained in not less than 350 different kinds of metre. It took prodigious effort to master the metres. Twelve years was the minimum period of study in these schools, with some courses extending to twenty years. The Poet's course in literature embraced 350 of the great Bardic Epics - all of which he must not only have memorized, but have mastered in every detail and be prepared to deliver when called upon. Further, when going for his final degree, he must be able to compose an impromptu short poem on any subject suggested. The Poet Ollamh - the poet of highest rank - had to be a master of Irish history, Irish antiquities, and genealogies of all the leading Irish families, and always be ready and able to recite anything called for at a moment's notice. Wonderful and powerful was the mental training of those who passed. The principal duties of the bard's office were to keep in verse the historical, genealogical, and legal records; to prepare for the public special poetic accounts of particular historic events; and to sing to the feats of the champions, the hospitality of the princes, and the charms of the women. So high was the regard for the poet of repute in ancient time, and for his work, that the voluntary fees were handsome. They were consequently wealthy and revered. No wonder some of these people thought that no consideration should bar them from the gratification of their slightest whim and that no man's rights were of any importance, if it came in conflict with their rights. Muiredach O'Daly was a member of the most famous family in the Celtic world, the family of UiDaílaidh [O'Daly]. The O'Dalys were established in their literary role as a bardic family by the 12th century. When Mael Iíosa Ua Daílaidh, Muiredach's great-grandfather, died in 1185, he was described in the contemporary Irish annals as Ollamh of Ireland and Scotland. According to Seumas MacManus in The Story of the Irish Races, Muiredach was highly respected as the King's Poet at the court of Cathal Crodhearg of Connaught. Unfortunately, he was forced to flee to Scotland in 1213 after making an enemy of the powerful chief of the O'Donnels, whose steward had the temerity to demand rent from the Royal Bard. O'Daly's response was swift and final -splitting the steward's head in two with a battle axe. Then, in traditional bardic arrogance, expressed his surprise over the ensuing fuss. Trifling our quarrel with the man,A clown to be abusing me,And me to kill the churl, Dear God, is this a cause for enmity? He arrived in Scotland in 1213 and settled at Finlaggan on Islay, the stronghold home of Donald, Lord of the Isles and grandson of Somerled, the Celtic-Norse founder of the Kingdom of Innesgall. The addition of the famed Bard to his court brought Donald additional prestige, and the two men became great friends. Donald became the founder and namefather of Clan Donald, and Muiredach of the Clan MacMhuirrich: the contracted Scots Gaelic patronymic mac Mhuireadhaigh, or son of Muiredach. After his escape to Scotland, Muiredach learned of his wife's death and wrote a lament for her: Tonight, O God, I am alone, Thou lookest on a crooked and evil world, Twenty years we were together, Sweeter with every year was our converse, One of my limbs she was - one of my sides, She was of countenance like the white thorn. Muiredach's fame and stature as a poet was without parallel in gaelic Scotland where he held an honored and revered position. The native Scots claimed Muiredach as their own as shown by the title bestowed him - Muiredach Albanach, or Muiredach of Scotland. At least twenty poems are ascribed to Muiredach, and it is significant that one of them is addressed to an Earl of the ancient Gaelic province of the Lennox, who died in 1217. Another of them can be seen from its contents to provide supporting evidence that he took part in the Fifth Crusade. This 13th century poem has been perpetuated for all time in the Roman Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul at Arrochar near the very spot where the poem was composed: Lo, tearful I sit on this knoll, No Longer light-footed and strong. 'Tis a far cry, Saints Peter and Paul, To Rome from the head of Loch Long. A footnote is added to the poem which reads Repeated by the Pilgrim Muiredach Albanach at the head of Loch Long in Argylshire when he returned from Rome. Such were the already ancient origins of Scotland's longest learned dynasty. Naturally it attached itself to the Lords of the Isles when these maintained a virtually independent Gaelic principality in medieval Scotland. Muiredach's sons and their sons held the office of Hereditary Bards and Historians to the Lord of the Isles, and later to Clan Donald. Nineteen years after the death of Muiredach, Donald, Lord of the Isles passed away and his son, Angus Mor, was inaugurated as the first MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, by Niall, the first MacMhuirrich. From this point on throughout the existence of the MacDonald Lordship of the Isles it was a MacMhuirrich Bard who performed this office at each successive Lord's inauguration. INSPIRE TO VICTORY: At the decisive battle of Harlaw in 1411, when the Lord of the Isles sought to enforce his claim to the lands of the Earldom of Ross against the Stewarts, it was Lachlann Mor MacMhuirrich [1370 -1438] who composed the incitement to battle. The clan motto since that day has been Inspire To Victory. O battle-loving Warriors, O brave, heroic firebrands, The Children of Conn of the Hundred Battles, O Children of Conn, remember Hardihood in time of Battle. Niall Mor MacMhuirrich is the first who appears under Clanranald patronage, and the earliest dateable poem from his pen belongs to the year 1613. The Clanranald bards produced the largest collection of MacMhuirrich writings. Niall MacMhuirrich [1637 -1726], the last of the bardic race, chronicled the wars of Montrose in the last body of gaelic prose to be written in Scotland in the ancient Irish script style. When he died in 1726, the bardic order became extinct in Scotland. There are many historical references to the Clan Currie to show that the MacMhuirrichs were a Clan in their own right and not just a sept. In a document from South Uist written in 1707, MacDonald of Clan Ranald grants land to Donald McMureach: I give and grant the lands of Staoligarry to Donald MacMureach in virtue of the station and office he presently serves me as bard and Sennachie and failing heirs of his own body I bind and oblige me and my descendants to warrant the Tack unto any other of the same Clan and tribe McMureach. In A History of the Highlands and of the Highland Clans [1850] author James Browne, L.L.D. writes: The Red Book of Clan Ranald was not written by one man, but was written, from age to age, by the family of Clan Mhuirrich, who were preserving and continuing the history of the MacDonalds and other heads of Highland Clans. Finally, in his forward to With Sword and Harp - The History of the Clan Currie by the late Major General Sir William McMurdo Currie, 30th Chief of Clan Currie, the Right Honorable Godfrey James MacDonald of MacDonald, High Chief of Clan Donald writes: The Clan MacMhuirrich held a distinguished position within the MacDonald Lordship of the Isles. The MacMhuirrichs were associated with Clan Donald for some five centuries as hereditary poets, and it is in the MacMhuirrichs that we MacDonalds are indebted for the vast treasure of Gaelic literature which was their output during that time, and also for preserving the history of Clan Donald throughout the centuries. Therefore, so long as there has been a Clan Donald, there has been a Clan MacMhuirrich. THE CURRIE TARTAN: The Currie tartan came into existence in 1822 at the time of George IV's State visit to Edinburgh. That year, Lord Alexander MacDonald, 10th Baronet of Nova Scotia, Chief of the MacDonalds of the Isles, granted to James Currie of Balilone, 23rd Chief of the Clan, the right to use the Lord of the Isles tartan as the basis for his own tartan. The grant from Lord MacDonald states In recognition of you as the Representor of the Highland Family or Clan of Currie, anciently Clan MacMhuirrich, who of old were the Historians of the Lords of the Isles. The grant goes on to say the right to use the Lord of the Isles tartan with certain heraldic differences, the differences to consist of two tinctions from the Currie Coat-of-Arms, namely black and gold, the same to constitute a guard in the darker green square of the basic Lord of the Isles tartan. This grant was reconfirmed in 1977 to the clan's last hereditary Chief, Major General Sir William McMurdo Currie by Lord MacDonald, the Right Honourable Godfrey James Macdonald of Macdonald, High Chief of Clan Donald. The tartan has, until recently, been restricted solely for the use the family of Currie of Balilone. This explains the tartan's virtual absence from many of the standard tartan publications which, it should be noted, have never maintained complete catalogs of the vast array of registered tartans. Today, the tartan is considered in a semi-restricted state, which requires all Curries who wish to acquire the tartan to request use of it directly from the Currie family under its acknowledged patriarch. This arrangement was confirmed by Major General Sir William McMurdo Currie, baronet, the last hereditary descendant of the Currie's of Balilone on 27 December 1991. The tartan is registered at the Scottish Tartan Museum in Comrie, and at the Glencoe Museum in Glencoe. CLAN LEADERSHIP: Colonel William McMurdo Currie was last of the direct line of the MacMhuirrich Chiefs. In 1959 a bond of allegiance, signed by over 400 West Highland members of Clan Currie, was presented to Col. Currie as their acknowledged Chief. Col. Currie was the maternal grandson of Vice Admiral Archibald McMurdo who in his younger days was Senior Lieutenant aboard the Terror, one of the two ships that took part in Sir James Ross' epic expedition to the Antarctic McMurdo Bay which later became McMurdo Sound, the location of US National Science Foundation's McMurdo Station. He led an illustrious life including a meritorious military career with the British Special Services. A Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Lazarus, he received a number of bravery awards including Poland's Vertute Militari, the Belgian Medaille d'Honneur, and the Tunisian Order of Glory. He also authored a number of historical novels in addition to With Sword and Harp, The History of the Clan Currie including An Historical Description of Loch Lomond and District, and The Curries of Cowal. After retirement from military service, Col. Currie served as the Honorary Ambassador to U.S. Navy Submarine Squadron stationed at Holy Loch, Scotland. In recognition of his service, he was designated an Honorary Submariner and presented with the Gold Dolphins of the United States Navy. Prior to his death in 1992, Col. Currie named Robert Currie of the United States as his successor and bestowed upon him the title of Clan Commander. When no direct heir exists, a Commander may be appointed for a twenty year term to act in place of a Chief. Currie was selected in recognition of his efforts to the rally the Clan in North America via the founding of The Clan Currie Society - a non-profit, tax-exempt, educational and cultural organization. Commander Currie today represents Clan Currie at highland gatherings and other cultural events throughout the world. As founder and president of the Clan Currie Society, Cdr. Currie has been active in support and representation of many Scottish activities and cultural gatherings and is a frequent lecturer on Scottish culture and genealogy. Appointed to represent the Scottish-American community of State of New Jersey on the governor's Ethnic Advisory Council, he has since been named Chairman of the Council by Governor Christine Todd Whitman. In this capacity, he served as chairman of the State's 1994 Ethnic Festival at Ellis Island where he participated in the swearing-in ceremony of some 200 new citizens. On behalf of the United States Navy, Cdr. Currie delivered a keynote address at the commissioning ceremonies of the USS John Paul Jones - a state-of-the-art guided missile destroyer named in honor of the Scottish-born naval hero. Currie has also served as Honorary Chief for several highland gatherings in the U.S. and Scotland including the Brodick Highland Games on the Isle of Arran and the Bonnie Brae Scottish Games. Cdr. Currie also presided over the 1992 Clan Currie gathering in Nova Scotia. Commander Currie was also a member of the host committee for HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to the United States to attend the World Pair Driving Championship. His efforts to educate the general public on the history and contributions of his Clan include editing a new edition of Sir William's book With Sword and Harp, The History of the Clan Currie for future publication, conducting fundraising activities on behalf of the Islay-based Finlaggan Trust, and the establishment of an international clan center to be based in Scotland. Through the Clan Currie Society, Cdr. Currie has established both an annual Kirking Of The Tartans festival and a Robert Burns Supper. He also serves on the Board of Advisors for the upcoming television production, Ancestors, created by the late Alex Haley, author of Roots. Commander Currie is descended from Peter Currie - a native of the Isle of Arran, Scotland. Peter Currie served on the HMS Alfred under the command of Admiral William Bayne from 1779 - 1783. Peter's son Neil Currie, born 1793, married Flora Currie at the Kilmory Church in July of 1828 and emigrated to Canada later that same year, settling in Hull, Quebec. His autobiography, The Religious Experience of Neil Currie, was published in Ottawa in 1846. Neil's son, David, also an author was one of Canada's most respected authorities on agricultural affairs who wrote for the Montreal Witness. A collection of his works was published in 1880 under the title The Letters of Rusticus. Cdr. Currie is a member of the Saint Andrew's Society of New York, Scottish Heritage - USA, and the American-Scottish Foundation. Elizabeth Heath and Mrs Alice K Wycoff of Long Beach Calif, one son William Tuttle of Montana, a number a grandchildren and great grand children. Your grandpa Tuttle talked about a brother Orin, he left home and no one ever heard from him again. Guess this will have to do for now as my eyes are getting tired. If you'll write now and then I could fill you in a little more maybe. Hope what I wrote makes sense to you. Got a card from Betty after I wrote them to let them know that Cecil Osman of Lincoln Nebraska died Nov 25, 1972, then your Aunt Daisy Osman died also Nov 29, 1972. Betty wrote that your Dad was holding his own, sure am happy about that. Well bye for now and a very merry Christmas to all Love Uncle Jess and Aunt Martha. She Letter sent to Roberta Tuttle & Jesse Betts on May 4 1980 in Glendive, Dawson county, Montana. Dear Birdie, Jess and Danny. Your letter came some time back, such a chore to write when there isn't much of interest to write about, think we all have this problem. Haven't heard from Peachie in a long time, now and then she'll take a notion and will write. The last time she wrote a nice letter and longer than she usually writes. Not sure but I think she was in the hospital when she wrote but the return address to her home. hope she is alright. you two should get together more as you are all that is left of your family. hear quite a lot about Mt. St. Helen, must have been exciting and a worry to a lot of people. You surely can be proud of Danny if he doesnt drink smoke or use drugs so many do, tell him we are real proud of him for that and his good grades also. Do think this is a bad time to raise a family. We were lucky with our kids, not too many worries. Your grandmother Tuttle was a Curry, her mothers maiden name was Ross your uncle Jess thinks Betsy Ross was a great Aunt to your grandmother Tuttle, about all we know of the family before coming to Nebraska is what is in this copy of a news paper clipping. She Letter sent to Roberta Tuttle & Jesse Betts in 1984 in Seattle, King county, Washington. Jesse Tuttle's wife Martha Vosler. writes: Grandma Tuttle were after thinking about it I wonder if I gave you the wrong impression, I loved them both very much. Grandma (Florence Evelyn Curry), had a rough life, she seldom stood up for her own rights, she tried to please everyone, like I said if one of the kids had a disagreement with the wife or husband grandma would listen then agree 100% with both of them, that kept the disagreement going. Guess I was lucky I knew them pretty well getting acquainted when I was five, I stood up to them both & I'm quite sure I was the favorite daughter-in-law. I've seen grandma put up clean curtains she'd worked so hard washing and ironing, Grandpa would decide he wanted to! Look out so he'd tie her curtains in a knot so he could see out the window, he'd sell or trade furniture right out of the house without talking it over with her first. One time she was cooking a meal, grandpa came in and told her to get that stuff off the stove he'd sold or traded it off can't remember which. Grandma would make out a grocery list, not any extras give it to grandpa he did the shopping, grandpa would look at it and say you don't need this or this and mark off half of the order. One time when your uncle Jess was in the army Grandpa came over and informed me he wanted your uncle Jess’s guns, I said no he didn't give up easy but he didn't get the guns. It was alright for the kids to do things they shouldn't but don't get caught. Grandpa was one for threatening the kids with the law. Maybe that is the reason why they didn't turn out better. It is a wonder they did as well as they did. Your uncle Jess and your grandpa couldn't be in the same house long with out an argument. Not sure how but I managed to hold my own without making them dislike me and I loved them both. Don't know if you know any more than before I started, hope so. I wrote Peachie, maybe she will answer maybe not. Thanks again for her address. Hope the wedding day holds nothing but happeness for Danny and the little lady and things go well for them for many years. Take care of yourselves and do write again soon. Love Aunt Martha. She Letter sent to Roberta Tuttle & Jesse Betts on Apr 26 1985 in Glendive, Dawson county, Montana. Dear Birdie and Jess. So good to hear from you always pleased when I find a letter in the mailbox. Sorry that Jess hasn't been feeling well, do hope he is his old self by Nov. Your uncle Jess had prostate surgery, am sure he waited longer than he should before he had the surgery. I wander if his dragging his feet about having the surgery caused at least some of his kidney problems. He had surgery so many times that he disliked the thought of surgery. If I remember right he had surgery 12 times. Julia is OK now, she has been going to the diet center and really looks good. She wants to loose a few more pounds. Hope she can keep her weight under control. Julia has always had a weight problem. I'm not sure where Grandma Tuttle was raised, I've heard your uncle Jess say she was from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, no idea if that was a fact or just something he would say. No recollection of a town. Grandma had a rough life, she seldom stood up for her own rights, she tried to please everyone, like I said if one of the kids had a disagreement with the wife or husband grandma would listen then agree 100% with both of them, that kept the disagreement going. Place of birth is given by Michael as Yaccoma but I wonder if this shouldn't be Yakima in Yakima county. She was married to J. T. BETTS (son of Charles Agustus BETTS and Della Luella RANKIN) on Jan 25 1943 in Seattle, King county, Washington. J. T. Betts and Roberta Wilma Tuttle were married at the Little Chapel, in Seattle, King County, Washington. J. T. BETTS6,1 was born on Jun 7 1922 in Reams, Pittsburg county, Oklahoma.4,2,7 He between 1923 and 1993. On a farm near Reams, Oklahoma, Guss and Della Betts had their first son, Jesse T. Betts, on June 7, 1922. Guss Betts had been born in Texas where his parents had homesteaded in 1905. Della "Rankin" Betts had been born in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma. Guss Betts was a share-cropper in Oklahoma, raising cotton, corn, maize, peanuts and watermelons, After the birth of his son, Jesse, he drove a truck and worked as a mechanic to help support the three daughters and three sons who followed Jesse in birth. Jesse Betts was a year old in 1923 when the family moved from Oklahoma to south Texas, and after a short stay there, moved to Supulpa, Oklahoma. Jesse attended three grades in school before the family moved to Wimberley, Texas. Jesse Betts continued to go to school in Wimberley until he was 12 years old in 1934. He then moved back to Hugo, Oklahoma. The family returned to Oklahoma where Jesse finished grade school and was in the 9th grade when tragedy struck the Betts family in the death of his mother. Soon after the death of his mother, Jesse joined the CCC’s (1938) and worked in western Oklahoma for awhile near a lake, building a dam and creating parks. The CCC Camp moved west to the Rio Grande River near San Antonio, New Mexico, where Jesse participated in experiments in flood control and setting up breakwaters on the river bank, was involved in experimental crop raising, building fences, etc., until early 1941. Jesse Betts was seriously considering the Marine Corps for enlistment. When a recruiting sergeant from Denver came down to the Camp, several of the boys enlisted and Jesse was among them. He was 19 years old and was sworn into the Marine Corps on April 21, 1941, and entered boot camp in San Diego, California. His brother Bud Betts, joined after he heard Jesse was in. The rigid discipline and super cleanliness, was quite a contrast to life in the CCC Camp. The well-regulated life in the marines with 3 good meals a day was reason enough to be there. After boot camp, Jesse attended sea school, and then went aboard a tanker for further transfer to Pearl Harbor for duty aboard one of Uncle Sam’s "Man of War" vessels that he had been trained for. He reported for duty aboard the USS Tennessee at Pearl Harbor in October, 1941, where she was berthed alongside Ford Island with the USS West Virginia tied up alongside. Jesse was assigned to the Marine Quarters about mid ship of the main deck just at the break of the quarter deck. His first duty was gangway watch and deck patrol. His battle station was on #9 Broadside Gun, working as wiper and rammer. The ship would go out to sea for maneuvers and gunnery practice for a few days and then return to Pearl Harbor for liberty for the men and for the ship to take on supplies. The USS Tennessee was tied up at Ford Island in early December, 1941. Jesse Betts was in the Marine Detachment when the entire United States Pacific Fleet was suddenly and attacked. Jesse Betts, Private USMC, was on mess cook duty that fateful Sunday morning. He had been participating in the constant practice on the gun loaders on the boat deck and had learned every position on the gun for firing during the practice shooting at aerial and sled targets in the weeks before this harrowed Sunday morning. His mess cook duty prevented his having a regular liberty, but he managed to find time to visit the Aiea Recreational Center to play ball and practice for his position on the swim team. He had been over at Aiea on Saturday and was planning to go again this Sunday after his mess cook duties were finished. He arose at 0530, brought the coffee down from the galley so it would be ready for the men when reveille sounded. When reveille did sound that morning, the men lashed and stowed away their hammocks in the same room where Jesse brought the tables down from the overhead storage and set them up for the marine crews’ chow. The food was brought down from the galley by the mess cooks in stacks of pans called tureens and served family style. When chow was finished, Jesse began the clean-up process and was putting the tables back up into their overhead storage--when suddenly General Quarters sounded. Marine Jesse Betts picked up an armload of tureens, and was on his way to the scullery when suddenly the pans flew out of his arms as a torpedo hit the USS West Virginia tied alongside. He ran through one compartment, past the scullery and up a ladder, then through a case mate and down a companion-way to his battle station on #9 broadside gun on the starboard side. The ammunition hoists were started and within minutes the gun was cleared for action. As Jesse Betts ran from the mess hall to his gun station, he closed and battened down the hatches he went through. It was a routine matter, but one that would prevent flooding and the spread of fire inside the ship. His case mate was stacked with 3 or 4 extra powder bags and projectiles. It was only a few short moments until they sent word to fire control that they were loaded and trained and ready to fire. The fire control officer returned with a message, "Secure the gun, you couldn't properly train on the attacking planes and firing would be useless." Jesse stood helplessly by and saw the hangar on Ford Island being destroyed. As he turned and looked out the case mate over the stern of his ship, he saw and heard an explosion aboard the USS Arizona that raised the ship up and out of the water momentarily with fire and smoke engulfing the ship. Men were screaming and jumping overboard. Jesse himself was knocked back against the gun by the force of the explosion and was battered and bruised on his back. His first thought as he regained his composure was, "I don't see how anyone could survive!" A few did, however, and some of the marines from the Arizona came aboard the Tennessee and spent the night, he later recalled. The resulting fire from the Arizona caught the oil on the water on fire burning some of the men who had either jumped or were knocked overboard other men were crushed between the great ships as they rocked back and forth from the waves caused by the explosions. The fire continued to spread across the water to the Tennessee, putting the electrical circuits out of commission. It also made the ammo hoists inoperable, so now the powder bags had to be carried back down to the storage room. As Jesse stood and watched the systematic destruction take place, an enemy plane flew low over the West Virginia and across the Tennessee and banked into a tight turn, so low that he could see the pilot grinning and chewing gum or tobacco. In the moments before the Arizona blew up, an enemy pilot had parachuted down into the water between the Tennessee and the shore, and as he waded ashore, a marine on duty on shore systematically put a bayonet through him--just as he had systematically destroyed our men and ships. Then Jesse watched the West Virginia sink into the mud at the bottom of Pearl Harbor. The men were abandoning ship and coming onto the Tennessee to get ashore to Ford Island. The area of water between the Tennessee and the shore was literally covered with men, but the enemy planes continued their destructive raid by continually strafing the area. Jesse stayed here at his gun station throughout the first wave of the attack, and then was sent below decks to bring up ammo for the 3-inch 50 caliber guns. There were no lights except battle lights. As he started carrying ammo up the ladder, someone shouted to take it all back down. Jesse was then sent to the armory to get Lewis machine guns and Browning automatic rifles and set them up on the forward deck. The confusion that reigned here was typified by the scene viewed by Jesse during the latter part of the attack--men wounded were not being attended to--a high level bomber came over and dropped a bomb between the ship and shore and many men were either killed or wounded, and still no attempt was being made to aid them--it seemed to Jesse that everyone was too busy trying to take care of himself. A fleeting thought entered his mind later that day that it took such a short time to make such a mess of things. By lunchtime, when he went to the galley to pick up sandwiches, he recalls it being "the dirtiest, smokiest and bloodiest place I ever saw. I never saw how much damage we had until later that day." By the time Jesse and his shipmates had the guns set up on the fo’c’sle, it was all over. He stayed on duty here throughout the night, and saw torpedo boats running around the Harbor, looking for enemy subs. During the night someone opened fire at planes landing on Ford Island, and suddenly everyone manning machine guns followed suit. Jesse recalls the almost unbelievable fact that the Master-at-Arms, who had been on liberty Saturday night, had returned to the ship and slept through the entire attack! His ship was made sea worthy and sent to the Bremerton shipyards in Washington for quick repairs. Then went on to Alaska to rescue it from a supposed invading Japanese army. After a stay up in Alaska the ship was brought back to Seattle for more extensive and much needed repairs. Jesse Betts met Roberta Tuttle at Yales’ Cafeteria on 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle, and one month later on January 25, 1943, they were married in Seattle. Marine Jesse Betts was transferred off the ship with orders to "be ready to go ashore at Tarawa." However, his orders were changed at the last minute, and he was transferred to Camp Lejune, North Carolina, for M.P. duty. Jesse was happy in more ways than one to get back to the States, as he had recently received a V-Mail letter from Roberta telling him that he had become a father to a baby girl on October 26, 1943, while he was crossing the equator. In early 1944, Jesse Betts was transferred from Camp Lejune, North Carolina, to the 4th Marine Division on Maui, Hawaii. This division was in training here during the summer of 1944, and in January, 1945, Jesse was with the marines when they landed on Iwo Jima. Jesse was wounded twice in this action and received the Silver Star as the result of this encounter. The regiment returned to Maui for regrouping and in preparation for the invasion of Japan, when news of the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima was received. Jesse returned to the States and was offered the position as Recruit Training D. I., but refused and instead accepted the assignment as Sea School D. I., where he remained until his discharge in January, 1947. He joined the Seattle fire department in 1947, and he joined Marine reserves and was called up during the Korean War and was assigned to Camp Pendleton Marine Base, training marines for overseas duty. He had achieved the rank of Sergeant in his military career. In civilian life he started to work for the Seattle Fire Department in 1947, and remained there until he reached the position of Chief. In 1976 he retired from the Seattle Fire Department. Jesse and Roberta made their home in West Seattle. They have raised a family of three, two girls, Kathleen and Susann, and one boy, Danny. Both girls are married, and Kathleen is an artist and has raised four children and Susann raised three children is divorced and is a teacher. Danny is also married. Jesse was a member of the Seattle Chapter of "the Pearl Harbor Survivors" for many years and believes in what it stands for. "In looking back over the years, he feels that we were not as ready on a small unit basis then as we are now. He also feels that we are more aware now, but not as prepared as we should be. He thinks that the present day military man is better equipped than ever before, but not as morally ready as he should be. He remembers vividly his years aboard ship and fondly recalls his feelings the "The Rebel.""(1973) In 1965 he came down with diabetes. He enjoyed traveling around the U.S. visiting relatives, fishing, hunting and being with his family. After retiring he spent a lot of time as a member of the following groups 4th marine division, Pearl Harbor Survivors and the retired fire fighters, he went on several trips with each group and enjoyed it very much. In 1985 he came down with shingles. Then just when his shingles had cleared, in 1986 he came down with non hutchkines lymphoma cancer then on March 29, 1993 at 12:23 am he died. He was living in 1924 in Melborn, Johnston county, Oklahoma. He was living in 1927 in Reams, Pittsburg county, Oklahoma. He was living in 1929 in Elmer, Jackson county, Oklahoma.
