Cage enlisted in Company G of the Fourth Mich. Cavalry on Aug. 9, 1862. His distinguished service and citation for valor and bravery earned for him the promotion to Second Lieutenant, which he served as until he was honorably discharged in Nashville, TN. on July 1, 1865. He kept a diary while in the Civil War. One entry, dated Wed. May 10, 1865 reads : " They caught Jeff Davis just before dawn this morning, and then they came back and we marched as far back as Abbeyville with them." NOTE: In 1892 Chaucla filed for his army pension. He was living in KS. at the time.
His widow applied for the pension March 17, 1925. She was living in OK. at the time.

Article in the Coldwater-Republican newspaper dated May 7, 1878 -
" OLD AGE AND YOUTH " - " Last Thursday there were two funerals at the school house in District No. 1, in Algansee, that of Mrs. Fiero, an old lady 83 years old, who died of palsy, and that of a 2-year-old child of McCager Bickford. Both sermons were preached by Elder Preston, and the house was crowded on each occasion by sympathizing friends. "

" A Complete Surprise - One of those pleasant times that tend to smooth the rough places of life occured last evening at the residence of Cage Bickford of Algansee. About 80 of his friends and neighbors took possession of the house to enjoy a good time and wish him and his a pleasant journey to their Kansas home and a happy life. About ten P.M. the company partook of a sumptious repast after which they returned to their several homes feeling that all had enjoyed a pleasant evening. "

"Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Bickford, of Odell, Neb., celebrated their silver wedding recently, over a hundred guests participating. Congratulations, speeches, dancing, and general good time was enjoyed, a very large number or elegant presents being bestowed upon Cage and his good wife. They were formerly residents of Algansee township, and their numerous friends in this bailiwick join in extending their best wishes. "
