Anton Biebel (Bibel on Tombstone) was born in Bavaria Germany in November of 1840 and passed away at the age of 38, in Green Bay on April 23, 1878.  When Anton settled in the Green Bay area, he became a farmer.

 

In 1861, Anton, at the age of 21, enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War.  He enlisted October 11, 1861 in Green Bay for a three-year tour of duty.  He was mustered into service in Milwaukee on October 29, 1861.  Civil War records show that he was 5 ft 8 inches tall, had brown eyes, dark hair, and fair complexion.  Other records indicate that he was transferred to Company E on January 1, 1864 after being absent because of illness at Fort Scott, Kansas.  He terminated service on December 3, 1864 in Milwaukee, WI.  He participated in the following battles.  Ferre Noire, Arkansas; Prairie DAnn, Arkansas; Poison Springs, Arkansas; and Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas.

 

On a source provided as part of a request for pension records from the War Department dated September 5, 1889, show that:

 

Respectfully returned to the Commissioner of Pensions:  Anton Biebel, a private in Company H, 9th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers was enrolled on the 11th day of October 1861 at Green Bay for three years and is reported on roll from enrollment to Feb 28, 1862; present March and April 1862; absent sick at Post Hospital - Service to June 30, 1862; July and August 1862 present, same to December 3, 1862; January and February 1863; absent at Springfield, MO; On extra duty as Teamster - March & April 1863, absent on detached service - May and June 1863, present same to December 3, 1863 - January and February 1864 transferred to Company H, January 1, 1864.  Roll of Company E, 9th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers from January and February 1864 reports him present.  Same for June - August 1864.  Absent on detached service as a Teamster in Brigade QM Department - same to October 31, 1864.  He was re-transferred back to Company H for mustering out of service on December 3, 1864

 

His Certificate of Service from the State of Wisconsin says the following:

 

The Ninth Infantry regiment was organized at Camp Siegl, Milwaukee, WI and mustered into the service of the United States October 26 1861, it left the State January 22, 1862, and proceeded to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, which was reached on the 29th of the same month.  On the 2nd of March the regiment, together with other portions of the Army in that territory participated in various movements on the Frontier until the 30th of September, when the Ninth was engaged in the battle at Newtonia, MO.  On the 27th of November, the Division of which the Ninth was a part, advanced into Arkansas and was part of the Union force present, but not actively engaged at the battle of Prairie Grove, December 7, 1862.  The Ninth participated in numerous expeditions during the 1863 and 1864 in Arkansas, including the Camden Expedition March 23-May 3, 1864, under General Steele, taking part in the battle of Jenkins Ferry, AR April 30, 1864, and a large number of minor engagements.  The service of the regiment was chiefly rendered in Arkansas and Missouri, which included skirmishes, guarding of railways and frequent long and arduous marches and expeditions in various directions.  The Ninth was mustered out January 20, 1866 and was disbanded at Madison, WI February 14, 1866

 

It appears that Anton re-enlisted in the Army on March 1, 1865 in Company F Fiftieth Wisconsin Infantry from Oshkosh, WI.  He became a corporal, but deserted August 26, 1865.  No legal action appears to have been taken.

 

Returning from the war, he married Anna Justen (Juster?) on February 13, 1866 at the Cathedral in Green Bay.  Anna was also born in Germany in 1845.  They had six children, Roselia, Clara, Anton Jr., John, Margaret, and Adam.

 

After Anton’s death, Anna married an Edward Bruette on January 9, 1883 in Oshkosh, WI.  They were divorced October 16, 1897.  When it came time to collect Anton’s pension in 1890, she was unable to furnish official records of her marriage to any soldier, or his birth or death certificate.  At those times, all records were kept by the Catholic Church and after submitting affidavits she did receive a pension of $30 per month for herself and $8 per month for her youngest son Adam, since he was under sixteen years of age.

 

After here divorce to Ed Bruette, she became ill and tried to get help from the Veterans Hospital in King, WI.  After having some trouble proving her qualifications, she had to resume the Biebel name finally was admitted to the King Hospital.  She died as a patient of King Hospital.

After high school, Dave attended University of Wisconsin Milwaukee for a short period of time and then returned to Sheboygan and got an Associates Degree in Mechanical Design from the Lakeshore Technical Institute.  He then worked at Sheboygan Machine and Thomas Industries in Sheboygan for about two years each.  He returned to Lakeland College to get his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration.  Presently he is working on his Masters of Business Administration at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee.

 

After leaving Thomas Industries, he began to work for the Sheboygan Department of Public Works as a sidewalk inspector.  As of 1999, he is now the deputy director of Public Works for the city of Sheboygan with hoped of becoming the director in a few years.

Early in his career he owned and operated a barbershop.  Later he worked as a butcher and eventually owned and operated Schmitz Sausage Company of Oshkosh for many years.  In the early 1950s, he was charged with selling horsemeat in his sausage.  After a long court battle, he was cleared of all charges, but by that time the company had lost most of its business.
