Joseph and Eva and their two
youngest sons, Anton age 7 and Frank age 3, came to America in 1847 from
Strassburg, Germany. They owned a home
on the north side of Green Bay which was later owned by their daughter Anna and
son-in-law John Feldhausen. The year
Joseph died is unclear at this time, but he did die at an early eage. Eva Rosina lived with Edward and Josephina
(Verdegan) Biebel for six or seven years before passing away in 1898 in
Bellevue, WI. They had five or six
children, Anton, Frank, Paul, Joseph, Anna, and possibly one other daughter.

Anton Biebel (Bibel on Tombstone)
was born in Bavaria Germany in November of 1840 and passed away at the age of
38, in Green Bay, WI on April 23, 2878.
When Anton settled in Green Bay area, he became a farmer. In 1861, Anton at age 21, enlisted in the
Union Army during the Civil War. He
enlisted October 11, 1861 in Green Bay for a three-year tour of duty. He was mustered into service in Milwaukee on
October 29, 1861. Civil War records
show that he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had brown eyes, dark hair, and fair
complexion. Other records indicate that
he was transferred to Company E on January 1, 1864 after being absent because
of illness at Fort Scott Kansas. He
terminated service on December 3, 1864 in Milwaukee, WI. He participated in the following
battles: Ferre Noire, Arkansas; Prairie
Dann, Arkansas; Poison Springs, Arkansas; and Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas.
On a source provided as part of a
request for pension records from the War Department dated September 5, 1889, show
that: Respectfully returned to the
Commission of Pensions: Anton Biebel, a
private in Company H, 9th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers was enrolled on the
11th day of October 1861 at Green Bay for three years and is reported on roll
from enrollment to February 28, 1862; present March and April 1862; absent sick
at post hospital - Service to June 30, 1862, July and August 1862 present, same
to December 3, 1862, January and February 1863; absent at Springfield, MO; On duty as Teamster - March & April 1863,
absent on detached service - May and June 1863, present same to December 3 1863
- January and February 1864 transferred to Company H, January 1, 1864. Roll of Company E, 9th Regiment, Wisconsin
Volunteers from January and February 1864 reports him as present. Same for June - August 1864. Absent on detached service as Teamster in
Brigade QM Department - same to October 31, 1864. He was transferred back to Company H for mustering out of service
on December 3, 1864.
His Certificate of Service from the State
of Wisconsin says the following:
The Ninth Infantry Regiment was
organized at Camp Siegl, Milwaukee, WI and mustered into the service of the
United States October 26, 1861. It left
the state January 22, 1862 and proceeded to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas that was
reached on the 29th of the same month.
On the 2nd of March the regiment together with other portions of the
Army in that territory, participated in various movements on the Frontier until
the 30th of September, when the Ninth was engaged in the battle at Newtonia,
MO. On the 27th of November the
Division of which the Ninth was part, advanced into Arkansas and was part of
the Union force present, but not actively engaged at the battle of Prairie
Grove, December 7, 1862. The Ninth
participated in numerous expeditions during 1863 and 1864 in Arkansas,
including the Camden Expedition March 23-May 3, 1864, under General Steele,
taking part in the battle of Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas and Missouri, which
included skirmishes guarding the railways and frequent long and arduous marches
and expeditions in various directions.
The Ninth was mustered out on January 20, 1866 and was disbanded at
Madison, WI February 14, 1866.
It appears that Anton re-enlisted in
the Army on March 1, 1865 in Company F, Fiftieth Wisconsin Infantry from
Oshkosh, WI. He became a corporal but
deserted August 26, 1865. No legal
action appears to have been taken against Anton.
Returning from the war, he married
Anna Justen (Spelling of last name not clear.
It could be Juster or something close to that) on February 13 1866 at
the Cathedral in Green Bay. Anna was
also born in Germany in 1845. They had
six children, Roselia, Clara, Anton Jr., John, Margaret, and Adam.
After Anton’s death, Anna married an
Edward Bruette on January 9, 1883 in Oshkosh, WI. They were divorced October 16, 1897. When it came time to collect Anton’s pension, she was unable to
furnish official records of her marriage to any soldier or his birth or death
certificate. At those times, all
records were kept by the Catholic Church and after submitting affidavits she
did receive a pension of $30 per month for herself and $8 per month for her
youngest son Adam, since he was still sixteen years of age.
After Anna’s divorce to Ed Bruette,
she became ill and tried to get help from the Veteran’s Hospital in King,
WI. After having some trouble proving
her qualifications, she had to resume the Biebel family name and was finally
admitted to the King hospital. She died
as a patient of King Hospital.

38 years in the public schools of Sheboygan, WI teaching mathematics and
computer science at three different schools in Sheboygan. Coached high school girl’s softball and
volleyball and was a volleyball official for 15 years. Served two years (1956-1958) in the US
Army.
After graduating from UW-LaCrosse
with a BS degree, he married Marilyn Schweder.
Upon return from military service they moved to Sheboygan, WI where
Harold began his teaching career. He
was also a very active participant in the formation of the Sheboygan Softball
Association since its inception in 1970.
Harold and Marilyn served as their concession managers at the Wildwood
Athletic Park for 23 years. He is the
past president of the Softball Association and Marilyn is a past
secretary. Harold served on the Board
of Directors for 25 years. He also
served as the State Youth Commissioner for the United States Slo-Pitch Softball
Association for 16 consecutive years.
He is a charter member of the Sheboygan Diamond Club, a non-profit
organization dedicated
to the promotion of youth and
amateur athletics in the Sheboygan area and served as their president for the
first ten years. He is also a member
of the Wisconsin Softball Hall of Fame.
When younger, he was very active in the Sheboygan Turner program,
competing mainly in gymnastics and also served as their president for four
years.

After high school, Dave attended the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a short period of time and then returned
to Sheboygan and got an Associate Degree in Mechanical Design from the
Lakeshore Technical College. He then
worked at Sheboygan Machine and Thomas Industries in Sheboygan for about two
years each. He returned the Lakeland
College to get his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. Presently (2000) he is working on his
Masters of Business Administration at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee.
After leaving Thomas Industries, he
began to work for the Sheboygan Department of Public Works as a sidewalk
inspector. As of 2000, he is now the
Deputy Director of Public Works for the city of Sheboygan with hoped of
becoming the director in a few years.

all charges, but by then the company had lost most of its business.

many activities and quite often two or three at the same time. He started out in the butcher business in a
small grocery store, but soon expanded into other occupations. During World War II, he was a pattern maker
for the defense contractors and did some work at the shipbuilding companies in
Manitowoc. He ran a very popular
grocery store on the corner of 13th and Oregon Street in Oshkosh, WI and also
ran a uniform store in Oshkosh.

Frank was born in Strasbourg,
Germany on September 12, 1844 and left Hamburg, Germany in June of 1847 for the
port of New York locating on a farm near Green Bay, WI in Bellevue. He served the last nine months of the Civil
War for the Union Troops in Company H, 4th Regiment Wisconsin Cavalry. He tried to enlist a year earlier, but was
refused because of heart trouble.
Whether his heart became better or the needs for soldiers greater, he
never was told, but when he reapplied the following year he was pronounced eligible.
On his Certificate of Service from
the State of Wisconsin the following information was given:
Entered service August 24,
1864. Enlisted into Company H, 4th
Wisconsin Veteran Cavalry from Fort Howard, Wisconsin. Mustered out of service June 13, 1865. The Fourth Cavalry was organized as a
regiment of Infantry at Camp Utley, Racine, WI and mustered into the service of
the United States on July 2, 1861. It
left the state on 15th of July,
proceeding to Baltimore, MD and into camp at the Relay House, MD, August
5, 1861, remaining on duty there until early in November when the regiment was
transferred to Baltimore. It remained
there until the latter part of February, 1862 when it proceeded to Newport
News, VA, from which point the Fourth embarked on the 6th of March to join the
Army of the Gulf. It arrived at Ship
Island below New Orleans, March 12, 1862, and landed in New Orleans on May
1st. It was at once assigned to active
service and took part with an expedition up the Mississippi River against
Vicksburg in May and another in June, and with this force occupied Baton Rouge,
LA a little later in the year. The
forces there were employed in successful expeditions during that winter and in
May were collected with a view of capturing Port Hudson, MS in which siege and
sanguinary contest the Fourth participated May 21 to July 8, 1863, the regiment
was by order of the War Department equipped as a cavalry regiment. Thereafter the Fourth regiment was actively
and almost constantly engaged in scouting, picketing and accompanying
expeditions of various points in Louisiana and Mississippi until July 1865,
when with other troops it was transferred to Texas near the Rio Grande. Companies of the regiment were detached to
guard different points along the line of that river, and the whole command
remained in this service until the latter part of May 1866 when the regiment
was transferred to Madison, WI which place was reached June 14th and the
regiment was soon thereafter mustered out of service of the United States and
disbanded.
His discharge papers said the
following:
Know ye that Frank Biebel, Private
of Captain E.A. Ramseys, Company H, 4th Regiment of the Wisconsin Cavalry
Volunteers who was enrolled on the 23rd day of August One Thousand, Eight
Hundred, Sixty Four to serve one year or the duration of the war is hereby
discharged from the service of the United States this 13th day of June 1865 at
Vicksburg, MS by reason of General Order No. 83 of War Department (no objection
to his being re-enlisted is known to exist).
Said Frank Biebel was born in Norwich in the State of Germany is 19
years old, 5’ 6” tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and by
occupation when enrolled was a farmer.

After the war, Frank returned to
Green Bay, WI and for 19 years afterward divided his time between farming,
working in saw-mills and managing a tavern and dance hall. He was the last surviving veteran of the
Civil War from the Green Bay area.
While living in the city he served on the Volunteer Fire
Department. One of his favorite stories
was that the fire was always out before they reached the fire because they had
to pull the wagon by hand.
On November 4, 1868, he married
Marguerite Hammas and they lived on a small farm. Later, they had a large combined home, tavern, and dance hall;
but they either sold or traded it for a farm in Kansas. They were there about one year and did not
do very well; they became discouraged,
sold the farm and decided to return to Green Bay. For this transaction, they received cash and Marguerite carried
the money in a sack on the train. Frank
become friendly with a stranger and at his suggestion they took a walk outside
the train where they met a man who
was introduced as the stranger’s friend.
After conversing for a while, this man asked if Frank could lend him
some money. Frank told him that he
didn’t have any on him, but his wife did.
He reboarded the train to get the money, but never returned to the
men. This took place in 1876.
They returned to Green Bay and
reacquired the large home, tavern, and dance hall. It was situated on the northwest corner of Lime Kiln Road and
Mason Street. The corner became known
as Biebel’s Corner. The building was
faced with white wooden siding. There
was just one long enclosed stairway on the south (Mason Street) side, which let
to the dance hall occupying the entire second floor. The dance hall and stairway where illuminated by kerosene lamps
hanging from black iron brackets on the wall.
Joe and Greg Du Charme played violins for most of the dances.
The tavern was to the front of the
building on the first floor facing the east.
The beer came in kegs-eighths, quarters, halves, and barrels. Some of the whiskey also came in kegs and
Frank would bottle it. Although he could
not read or write he always knew every cent anyone owed him. Ladies never went to the bar. They entered a room adjacent to the tavern,
which was equipped with tables and chairs, or into the parlor of the house that was next to this room. Living quarters were in the back of the
tavern on the first floor. The spare
room, parlor, kitchen, and summer kitchen were on the south or the Mason Street
side.

Schurger(in), slept in one of the bedrooms.
Another bedroom was for Frank and Marguerite, and the other bedrooms
were for the children. The bedrooms
were unheated and they slept between feather ticks. Under the summer kitchen was a small basement with stonewalls and
a ground floor. It was entered from the
outside and used for storing potatoes.
The living quarters, the tavern and dance hall were heated with wood
burning stoves. Frank owned a wooded
lot on the Finger Road. They cut wood
there in the summertime for the following winter. It was cut into four-foot lengths and loaded onto a cutter pulled
by horses. The wood was brought home
and piled in the yard. Later it was cut
into smaller lengths before burning.
Separate from the house and tavern,
on the north side of the building, was a shed about 50 feet long. It was used as a place to put the horses
when people were in the tavern or at a dance.
It was also used as a stopping place for farmers who were traveling long
distances. They would feed them in
their wagons and would stop to feed them at the shed. They also used this shelter when it rained.
All Frank and Marguerite’s children
were born in this house and lived there until 1897. They were John, Joseph, Catherine, Frank Jr., Mary, Peter, Rose,
Michael, Edward, George, Christine, and Anna.
Three other children Frank, Mary, and Anton all died at the age of
three. In 1897, the family re-located
on an 80 acre farm on Lime Kiln Road in Bellevue. This was a red brick home with a large parlor, kitchen, summer
kitchen and two unheated bedrooms downstairs.
There were three unheated bedrooms upstairs where the children slept
between feather ticks. The mattress of
the beds were stuffed with cornhusks and covered with feather ticks or quilts
that were about one foot thick.
The farm did not have a silo to
store feed for the winter. In the
winter when there became a shortage of food they would have to wait for a
strong wind for the windmill to run the feed cutter. Many times the children would have to get up in the middle of the
night to cut feed if the wind would begin to blow.
In 1903, Frank retired. At that time his sons, Joe age 30, Michael
age 17 and Edward age 15 built a new home for their parents on Lime Kiln Road
near Mason Street. The lot consisted of
1 1/2 acres of land. Only Joe, the
eldest received any wages for working.
Mike and Ed only worked for their room and board. In 1920, Joe and Ed built another home for
their parents at 1145 Crooks Street.
Frank and Marguerite lived there for the remainder of their lives. Both the tavern and the farmhouse were
destroyed by fire in later years.
Frank was uneducated and he could
not read or write, but he did deliver mail from Green Bay to Kewanee. He carried it on horseback on a trail
through the woods. When he arrived at
his destination, the people would pick out their own mail. He was also an excellent swimmer and a river
man. He drove logs down the East River
to the lumber mill by standing on or riding the logs.

John worked at the Hochbgreve
Brewery located in Allouez across from the Catholic cemetery. he and his wife and perhaps three children
lived in a house near the brewery. They
began carrying a few groceries and his wife baked bread thus turning their house
into a small grocery store. In 1903
they purchased an existing grocery store at 1400 E. Mason Street from Pete
Wiggers. It was a typical grocery store
of the time with dry goods, ladies’ ready to wear, hardware, barrels of product
and of course canned good and other groceries.
He operated the store for a total of 46 years. This is the store that his son Roy took over and later his son
Paul. The store is now located at 1l234
Bellevue Street in Green Bay, WI. In
1953, it celebrated its 50th Anniversary.
John had been a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for 50 years
and also a member of the Catholic Knights and the Holy Name Society of the
Cathedral.

school sweetheart, Dorothy Bouche Biebel for 61 years. Ray was known for his honesty, decency and
sense of justice. He had a love for
life and shared himself generously with family and friends. Many considered Ray to be Green Bay’s
biggest sport fan. He was a legendary
card player.
