I am researching my family that came from Norway and need information. The family name started with Rolf Guddal born 1609. Guddal is the oldest farm in Soknadal Norway. There was also a Jon T Guddal who lived there in 1626 and married a Inger Sigvalsdatter(Sigavls-daughter). There was also a man called Haskol in 1653 that lived in Guddal for a short time then Rolf came and settled in Ovre Guddal or Upper Guddal. He may have come from Roiland in Lund. The other family names I need more information about are: Sigbjorn Rolfsen born 1644, Rasmus Sigbjornsen born 1692 and Sigbjorn Rasmussen born 1725. He may have had a son named Jacob Andreas who lived in Lindland, where the families Hoiland, Avendal and Goudland came from. There was a daughter named Gunvor born 1773 who married Jorgen Arstad. Any information would be appreciated. I will share any of the information I have with anyone.
This is a little history of the Guddal family
Guddal is one of the oldest farms in Sokandal, a town mid-way between Egersund and Flekkefjord in Norway. In the old days when probate was to take place between the farms Guddal and Log in Ana Sira, it was agreed that the persons concerned should start from each home at a specified time, walking towards each other and where they met was where the probate should take place. They meet at the Skogestad River and the judge said that the Guddal man had started too early. They agreed to tie belt, meaning to tie themselves together with a belt and each with a knife in hand, and both were killed and buried there. The burial mound was still visible in the 1870 - 80's, then the flagstones were used to repair the bridge over the Skogestad River. The exact year is not known. Many have lived in Guddal for shorter or longer times in the olden days. but it is impossible to find out who they were. The story goes that a foreigner once lived there. he came from a ship that was wrecked, married and settled at Guddal, but the family died out during the Black Death in 1349. Catholic priests held sermons during the first years of the Reformation in the 1500's in the Ure Church. This was a formation of three enormous rocks that formed a hall or grotto, that was used as a church and a hide-away for those that still kept to the old faith. Jo or Pøtten's father was a priest in the Ure Church, he had many children but all died young, only Jo lived. When Jo was 10 years old his father was killed by a bear. After Pøtten was killed, he was executed for murder, ripped apart between four horses. He had earlier been thrown out from a cliff by the sheriff's men. (the sheriff wanted his wife) He survived but hit his head so badly that he turned mad. When he later killed two young girls (whom he in his madness thought were the sheriff's spies) and brought their blood-soaked clothes home to his beautiful wife Thora,(she was called the "The Rose of Mydland") and daughter he was arrested and sentenced to death, a man named Laurits lived there and he was a witness in a court case in the 1600's. In 1626 a man by the name Jon T. Guddal lived there. His wife was Inger Sigvalsdatter.( Sigvals-daughter). In 1653 a man called Håskol lived only for a short while at Guddal, then Rolf came and settled in Øvre Guddal, upper Guddal. He probably came from Røiland in Lund as I have found the names Rolf and Sigbjørn there and in the book about Lund there is mentioned one Rolf born at Røiland, but they do not know where he lived. But it fits the date. Translated and supplied by: Asbjorn Hegdal, Post-box 105, N-4380 Hauge i Dalane, Norway
