Welcome! My maternal great-great grandmother came with her husband and children to California on a covered wagon. Times were hard and this family had been traveling for over three years while suffering extreme hardships and even starvation. They departed Kansas in 1885 and arrived in Bishop, California on August 7 of 1888. They finally stopped just outside of Bishop and took shelter under a large rock, while awaiting the birth of little baby Cliffie. Her older brother carved his name and initials into the stone with this form of "pioneer graffiti" and it reads "Tobe Way, Aug 7, 1988" My genealogy surname research for this part of my family is as follows: Name: Anna Reynolds or Staut? Born: Kansas around 1860 Marriage 1: Mr. Way Place: Kansas around 1875 Begat: Bertha, Sadie, Tobe and Cliffie Marriage 2: Choppie Bradshaw Buried: Anna Bradshaw, Cremated, Independence, California My maternal great grandmoter was born April 15,1880 as Bertha Way. She married Ed Rose in 1897 and they had two children, Mary Edna and Arthur. The Rose family were Scottish. They were living in Ireland, but not Irish at all. Their ancestors had been captured by the Huns and taken to live in Ireland. The Rose family is buried in Independence. All four graves are surrounded with a black wrought iron fence with one tall marker. My maternal grandmother was born March 3, 1901 as Mary Edna Rose and she married Francis Willard Ahrens in 1918. They had two daughters, Barbara and Gail. Willard was from a wealthy hardworking German family that had gotten its wealth from the success of their “Ahren’s Kitchens,” located on Vermont in Los Angeles. Grampa Edward Ahrens purchased the original German pie recipes from their cook and then opened up twelve locations for their new “Ahren’s Pies” business. One of the Ahren’s Pies location is still open in San Francisco, CA. Grandpa Ahrens also owned "Ahrens & Sons" or "Ahrens Brothers" construction company in Los Angeles as well as a farm up in Owens Valley, CA. Willard was one of six children in the Ahrens family. His Mother, Ida Keefer ( Grandma Ahrens) was born in Philadelphia, of Pennsylvania Dutch descent. Willard’s father, Edward Frederick Ahrens (Grandpa Ahrens) was from Olden, Germany which is next to Ahrensburg. Willard’s grandfather was Ahren Ahrens and his mother’s first name was Gertina. Gramma Ida & Grampa Edward Ahrens and all their children (Carl, Ralph, Ed, Frank, Willard, Mary and Mildred) are buried in their family plot in Southern CA. My mother Barbara was born in 1922 and in 1938 married Adam Reich who was born in 1918. They had four daughters, of which I am the youngest! THE REICH FAMILY:Adam was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to Anna and Joseph Reich. His parents were both Volga German's from Russia immigrants. They had at least one child before they managed to escape during the revolution. They fled to the freedom of the United States, and settled in Lincoln, Nebraska. A strong German Lutheran family, they eventually sired 13 children. Joseph supported his family with a number of small grocery stores, similar to the modern day 7-11. If any of these names or stories are familiar please contact me. Other family surnames that we are researching are: KRUMCKE, CAVANAUGH, SIMMONS. |
