Mendozia (Mitchell) (Neely) Biggs of Hood County, Texas

Updated May 2, 2008

This is the Family Genealogy concerning the extended family of my mother, Mendozia Mitchell Neely Biggs and my father, Hershel Raborn Biggs, both of Hood County, Texas.

One of my goals was to provide as thorough a list of children as possible in one place for these families (exception, living children are not shown or identified):

Elward S. Terrell, Sr (b. May 24, 1812, d. November 01, 1905)
David Peveler (b. May 10, 1800, d. January 31, 1867)
Thomas P. Mullins, Sr (b. November 02, 1836, d. June 03, 1892)
Harrison L. Neely (b. July 22, 1843, April 19, 1913)
Calvin M. Neely (b. February 22, 1868, d. November 18, 1948)
John I. Mitchell (b. September 06, 1861, d. January 08, 1946)
Malotha B. Biggs (b. January 13, 1815, d. Bet. 1860 - 1870)
Richard A. Biggs (b. February 08, 1846, d. April 13, 1913)
Daniel A. Biggs (b. October 27, 1872, d. August 13, 1905)
James B. Hobbs (b. July 06, 1849, d. March 02, 1928)
Joseph P. Eaton, Jr. (b. February 08, 1851, d. April 1916)

As I did research, I was somewhat surprised to find so many of my ancestors were simple, determined, hardworking, common folks. This web page explores the Biggs, Eaton, Hobbs, Mitchell, Mullins, Neely, Peveler and Terrell families. I grew up thinking that I was related to half the folks in Hood County. As I later found out, my fifth grade teacher was my Half 2nd cousin twice removed (by adoption). Guess I must have been related to a lot of people.

We start with mother's adopted grandfather, Thomas Patrick Mullins, Sr. (b. Nov. 2, 1836), son of Morgan Mullins, a Methodist minister. Thomas Sr. actually died some ten years before Mother was born. Nannie Mullins, Thomas' wife, must have been a very strong and determined person to raise the children who remained at home.

We first hear of Thomas Patrick Mullins in Texas as living at Whitney, Texas, where he was married to Nannie Elizabeth Terrell, January 11, 1867. Their first child, Edward, was born in Whitney, Texas, December 25, 1869. The family moved to Granbury, Hood County, Texas in the early 1870’s. They first lived on West Pearl Street, across the street, almost opposite from what was known as the Mullins place, at 1030 W. Pearl. This house has since been relocated to another location. This story about the Mullins family is shown in the Link below.

From a personal note, my strongest and most loving memory was of my paternal grandmother, simply known to me as "Ma". My paternal grandfather died in 1905. Ma later married James P. Eaton, who I grew up knowing as "Pa". As a child growing up, I can not think of any single thing that I would rather do than go visit Ma and Pa.

My thanks to all those who have helped to make this web site a reality. For Mike and Susie Mullins who are so dedicated to this task. For so many of the Peveler and Terrell family members for their help. For Vickie Jones and other Mitchell family members. For Andy Anderson who has done so much to make Biggs family information available and for his patience with me. For the family of Gloria Kosco who allowed me complete access to her research. Then for all those in the internet world that posted some tibit about a family member was another piece of the puzzle. Finally, for my brother Al who has been so patient and supportive.
