Notes for John Jolly Keesee: John Jolly Keesee served as a private in Company E, 4th Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry (CSA) and his widow filed for a Confederate Widow's Pension in Texas in 1923 [#38916]. In that application packet, there is an Application for Certificate of Honorable Discharge, acquired by JJK in 1894 by his Arkansas attorney when the War Department in Washington, DC had no record of his service. It shows JJK served in Colonel Fishback's battalion, as a private in Company E, 4th Regiment Arkansas Cavalry, enlisted 26 January 1864 in Little Rock, Arkansas, and served up to the date of disbandment. His captain's name was Enoch H. Vance; his lieutenant's name was W. W. Mitchell; his orderly sergeant was Robert H. Stanfield; and the following soldiers were in his unit--Cicero Murray, John Fenter, Berry White, Samuel F. Shockley, N. A. Tull. It also states that Col. Fishback was "now" Governor of Arkansas. This same document states that JJK was born in Saline County, Arkansas, was 19 when enlisted, was 6' tall, with dark complexion, black hair and black eyes, and was by occupation a farmer. In her widow's application, 12 March 1923, Mary Jane Keesee applied from Denton, Texas, and stated she lived at P.O. Address, Denton, Texas, at the time of application--and had lived at that address for 49 years. She was 75, born in Hall County, Georgia, was the widow of JJK, who died 2 September, 1909 in Denton County, Texas, and she had not remarried. She had lived in Texas for 49 years [since about 1874]. She stated that her husband had enlisted 26 January 1864 and was discharged 28 March 1864, serving three months and two days. Affadavit of Witnesses, dated 12 March 1923, were signed by J. D. Bates and W. R. Orr in Denton County, Texas, before Brent C. Jackson, County Judge. The stated: "We have known the family intimately pratically [sic] ever since they came to Denton County, Know them to be honorable trustworth [sic] people in every way, knew the said John J. Keesee in his life-time: knew he took part in confederate gatherings during his life-time, we have also seen application sent John J. Keesee in 1894, by Cos. Atterbury of Little Rock, Arkansas [the attorney who procured JJK's honorable discharge], in which all these particulars are set out, and which showed the said John J. Keesee to be a member of the 4th Regiment, Ark. Cavalry, Col. Fishback's regiment." The state and county assessor affirmed MJK had no property. R. J. Wilson and Mrs. M. A. Simmons also filled out an Affadavit of Witnesses, testifying to JJK's service and that they "were raised neighbors to John J. Keesee and have known him all our lives . . ." Dated 27 March 1923. The War Department, responding to a request for JJK's war record, stated: "The name John J. Keesee has not been found on rolls on file in this office of Co. E, 2nd. also known as 4th Regt. Ark. Cav. C.S.A. covering the period May 1, 1862 to Oct. 31, 1862, dated Jan. 14, 1863. nor has record been found of the service, capture or parole of a man of that name and orgn.", dated 20 March 1923. [The dates for which they had records for JJK's unit obviously did not include the time of his service.] Mary Jane's application was approved April 3, 1923. The last paper in the application packet is an Application for Mortuary Warrant, dated 15 April 1929, stating that Mrs. Mary Jane Keesee died 4 April 1929 in Denton, Denton County, Texas, at the home of Mrs. M. A. Simmons [same woman who signed an affadavit for MJK on pension application], who was MJK's sister. The application was filed by R. J. Wilson, who was MJK's brother and who lived at 612 Pearl Street, Denton, Texas. The undertaker's statement (J. F. Schmitz), town of Denton, says he prepared MJK's body for burial on 5 April 1929, after her death on 4 April 1929--no mention of burial place. The physician was W. C. Kimbrough, who attended MJK in her last illness [but did not fill out the section asking what her ailments were]. |
