From Jeff Henson e-mail, <jwhenson@onr.com> to <ceb@rice.edu>, 8 April 1999:

I did go to the TX archives over the Xmas break and I found some information that may interest you. I wrote some of this down in a letter to Teddie Sue Carter, which I am pasting below.

In searching the TSP [Texas State Police] files, I found. . . . There was a letter dated 29 Aug 1871 to a TSP officer, Lt Clayburn Johnson, bringing his attention to the enclosed capias against one Gideon Keesee. Johnson was instructed to go immediately to Ellis Co and arrest Gideon Keesee, and return him to Washington Co for trial. I found in the penitentiary files a Giddeon Keesee, age 59, from TN, left arm paralyzed, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to 5 years in prison in Washington
Co in Oct 1874. I have enclosed a copy of the notes from the penitentiary files for you. He was pardoned by Gov Coke and discharged on 5 May 1875. He was pardoned because of "the ill health and extreme age of the convict, and doubts existing as to the correctness of his conviction... " A copy of this pardon is also enclosed [to TSC]. Going to have to check the local papers on this one. This could have been a motivating factor for the Keesees to leave Washington County for other parts of Texas.
